1TB PS4 uses old sku of the PS4 (same as launch 500GB PS4), newer 500GB models use less power and produce less heat.

Rumour has it, one way of it using less power is by not spinning the fan so much, which in turn actually generated more heat

I was gonna get one of these tablets for the same price from Sainsbury's a few months back, but they sold out so I've took the plunge here. Hopefully it's good enough for streaming online videos and general browsing.

I know CPU's.

I strongly recommend that you choose an i5 or above - fourth gen upwards for any sort of gaming.

You will also need a decent video card (know as a Graphics Processing Unit [GPU for short]).

The core issue then, is that you need to power both of these sufficiently - so the power supply must be up to the task.

This desktop is not that good a deal - if you will consider buying refurbished units from PC World (always buy on a credit card for anything over £100 as it gives you added consumer rights).

For a friend of mine who is a computerphobic lorry driver, and wants a pocket device to book accommodation and public transport when he's out and about, this or the Amazon Fire?
thecresta to gorgo2015
12 Feb 16 #33
Not this. It's a great little device don't get me wrong, but it's not particularly user friendly, and the default Edge web browser does not perform well on it. It would frustrate and confuse a computerphobe.

12 Feb 16 #28
My 6 year old Phenom X4 @ 3.2GHz paired with a 2GB 7850 (neither of them overclocked) still runs Far Cry 4 comfortably on Ultra, and that was considered a budget processor at the time.
Libertas
12 Feb 16 1 #29
Even though there seems to be a couple of rebuttals posted, I strongly suggest you check each of these opinions against independant sources.

Having been an Intel representative, I am beyond confident, that if you are looking to access a medium to longer term gaming rig investment - start with an i5.

Start by browsing a few pc magazines in WHsmiths. Look at the pc builder adverts, that are strewn within these publications. I assure you 9 out of 10 'gaming rigs' start with i5's as a base, moving up to i7's for premium rigs.

I assure you - the breathing room that an i5 provides - is something you will thank me for at some point. It's simply a better vaule prospect than coming in at an entry level (mainstream) level with an i3.

Pound for pound, you will see a higher return on your (no doubt) hard earned pounds.
thecresta
12 Feb 16 2 #30
Excellent sales pitch!
"I am beyond confident that the PC magazines you read in WH Smith are not independent sources, and assure you their opinions are more than likely financially influenced by Intel representatives looking for a high return."
Libertas
12 Feb 16 #32
Don't just address my opinion. At a minimum, you could offer some infomation that positively helps our fellow hotukdeal member uncover a solution/find a direction for themselves.

At least make an attempt to help by pointing them in some sort of direction, with an outline to start with.
thecresta
12 Feb 16 #34
I felt I have helped in that respect. By suggesting that people refer to the experience of true independent sources on Hotukdeals, rather than an Intel representative who suggests they base their purchasing decision on the information found in "adverts".
Libertas
12 Feb 16 #36
Former intel representative. It's quite clear in my post.

I also never said an i5 is needed, but rather suggested it is preferable. Again, it just takes a moment to read my posts.

The adverts were mentioned, so that the poster can see what the custom pc industry considers 'industry standard' when offering/discussing gaming rigs. Again, I was clear that these PC magazines and the adverts within, them are 'just a starting point'. Again its a matter of simply reading the post.

To the person that had asked the question that elicited my original response. Think of it like this. You can buy an entry level iphone with 16gb of onboard memory, or one with 32gb. Yes one is more expensive than the other, but eventually you'll end up realising why (over the long term).

Best wishes to you both.
jomay
12 Feb 16 1 #37
Sorry, were you looking for the word overconfident...
Yes, an i5 is a good choice for someone who is seriously into gaming. At this point you'd want a high end graphics card as well.
However, if you are on a budget or if you only play occasionally an i3 or even a Pentium is a sufficient. A high end graphics card may be a waste of money in such a configuration.

I've had a 7850 with a Pentium which worked surprisingly well for medium/high settings in various games.
Giiibbs
12 Feb 16 #39
Hmm might not be worth it
Giiibbs
12 Feb 16 #40
What would you recommend?
mermoid
13 Feb 16 #41
"Comfortably"

Depends what you define as comfortable.

Techspot benchmarked the 7850 at 38fps average in Far Cry 4, and that was paired with a significantly faster CPU than yours, the i7-4770K. In their CPU benchmarks a few pages later the Phenom X4 was lagging 17fps behind the i7 when both paired with a GTX 980.

Regardless of benchmarks, I have two PCs both with the same model of graphics card, but one has an i3-4150 and the other an i5-4590 and in several games I can tell which one is which using the naked eye alone, such is the difference in frame pacing in particular. Even when they're both running in and around 60fps the i3 machine is often noticeably more jittery in certain environments (e.g. dense city areas in GTA V). The recommendation to go no lower than an i5 in a gaming rig is a very sound one.

I'm.looking for a cheap tablet for random browsing and games such as clash of clans.. what would be the better choice linx 7 or amazon fire 7? I'd prefer the one that can handle the games better and doesn't over heat as much ofcourse
captainbeaky to hello786
13 Feb 16 1 #43
I think you would probably be better off with the Amazon Fire or an Android tablet - with full access to the Play store. There are usually a few around at this kind of price - such as

While this tablet is more than capable of some light gaming the Windows App Store isn't great.

13 Feb 16 #47
Funny you mention this Techspot benchmark. They have also assessed a Core i3. Compared to an i5 it only lost ~10% of the framerate (from 83fps to 76fps) when paired with a high end graphics card. Here is their conclusion:

In general, spending more on the graphics card improves framerates much much more than spending the same on the CPU. A Core i3 paired with a good graphics card is a good choice for the budget gamer.

You cite the 38fps for the 7850, but that refers to the Ultra setting of Far Cry4 on FullHD. Sure, for the enthusiast gamer this is the right setting. Someone on a budget may simply reduce the settings and get very playable fps:
Very High: 48 fps (19 fps 1% quantile)
Medium: 61 fps (31 fps 1% quantile)

You can buy i3 if you're on a budget but why not save like 80£ and get i5 which will gonna be much more future proof? I mean you know how fast games requirments going up and when you considering that next-gen consoles are here. Its only a matter of time when it will go up even faster..
Just wait few years till ps3 and xbox360 dies..
Libertas
14 Feb 16 #52
Again, another sensible nod to considering the timeframe you are investing for.

An i5 buys you 'breathing room' over the i3.

For a laptop's timeframe - my rule of thumb is 3 years minimum (should get you through a 3 year degree and a year of work / a masters degree).

For a desktop, for an mid level spec (I got a refurb 4th gen i5 with basic gpu and 1gig hdd for £233 in the sales), 5 years minimum is about right (I no longer game on my desktop).

With regards to gaming, just remember this - hardware requirements go only one way, year after year - and that way is up.

An i5, pound for pound (all other things remaining the same), is a better value prospect over an i3 - over a medium to longer term timeframe.

Sorry, but I disagree.

Having got an Nexus 7 2012 edition, was looking for a replacement and this is it.

IT's got an SD card, so 128GB +17GB internally of movies.
You can install full windows apps, do you DONT need to use the store.
Kindle app - no problems.
Solitaire - no problems
Candy xxxx no problems.

The only downside as far as I'm concerned is that the nexus will easily do 12 hours, the linx 7 more like 7. So if you don't want to get a battery pack, then look at android.

That said this also comes with one years office 365, which is worth £60...

As for games - lots of other people with success here.
