At the rate technology changes you can't rely on a brand remaining at a certain level over a period of time.
Check reviews. Companies put out so many products for so many markets that you're bound to have some duds.
I've had several seagate hard drives for around 10 years but would never let that sway my present day buying needs.

My wireless MFC brother is at least 14 years old and still going strong. Costs peanuts to run.
Not sure if it's this model but a friend has one of these A3 brother MFC's and together with an external ink reservoir (which she hasn't refilled in years) she swears by her printer and it gets thrashed with PSA bulk printing, unlike mine.

Wrong! Yes you can. This particular model ha the same chassis, same components with updated hardware and software. The mechanisms are slightly upgraded but fundamentally the same. This will last ages.

I own one of these and it's terrible.
Actually I'm on my second one, Brother replaced the first after sending out 3 different engineers to try to fix it.
The replacement still doesn't work properly. The main problem is with the rear sheet feeder not picking up paper and when it does, that paper often doesn't feed straight. Most of the problems are related to photo printing, so if all you want to do is print plain paper then it's fine.
The page feed on the scanner doesn't scan straight, but is easily fixable with Adobe Acrobat. The flatbed A3 scanner is good.
I voted cold because of my photo printing experiences, but Brother customer service is very good and quick to try to sort out problems.

I run an older version of this (as said elsewhere, mechs are largely unchanged) and it has these problems, so fault is in the design. You can, by being careful about paper placement, mitigate some of the skewing. If you can live with these limitations then these are very good otherwise. I'd buy another but my old one soldiers on. (Bought mine for £19 from some dope who said it was defective - just needed print head alignment through menu system).

I have a different model with an A3 feed at the back. When doing posters I've found the same thing, that it skews. It's pretty much a design flaw rather than something that can be fixed on a per printer basis I think. Because the only thing guiding the paper in is the initial grip and 2 guides in the hatch, there's really no way of knowing whether it will feed straight. The only way I can think it might be a fault with the printer is if the feed isn't pulling the paper equally, but I don't think there's really any way to tell!

speaking from an older model of brother printer too: in these the ink cartridges one can refill and reset just fine.

Yeah 02 or 03? and it was really expensive back then. Occasionally I check for software updates but it works so that doesn't seem so important.
Anyway, just my way of saying Brother printers seem to last and are pretty cheap to run.

If it is looks cheap some way so something wrong - just me think
Now any company creating superb product/ quality product - do they will sell discounted price or half price No they want to earn us much as they can profits
If product good quality people will buy for any price
My opinion you can get sometimes cheaper good quality product when model change- but that all Not half price etc .

But a lot of customer reviews don't paint a pretty picture and that was my point. You can't purchase with blind brand loyalty.

Exactly the same for me when using heavyweight paper fed from the rear. I always set my images up with a 20mm border and found when they came out the front the gap was down to less than 10mm on one side, that is some skew.
What I tried......and it seems to work to a degree was measure up 50mm on either side of the paper and put a feint mark on it, I could see the paper being pulled to one side, so I now keep hold of the paper trying to keep it taught, 9 times out of 10 this works but it's still a faff on.

I had to up the dpi to 600 to overcome the contrast lines that sometimes showed on certain scans, then again I paid £45 for a brand new one a year ago off ebay and have learned to work around its faults

As a computer technician with bad experience of these I advise steer well clear. My customers suffered loads of frustration with 2 of these one after another so they went back and the staff at (large out-of town store) didn't kick-off - almost as though they new something and my customer was not the first to return one. In fact you are better off buying a printer from Printerbase.co.uk with a 3 yr warranty and cashback deal - but don't buy this model.

Nice one ap..
Bit puzzled as to where all the issues and review faults are coming from
as not had any issues with lots of these when posted the same deal last
year for one of our streetgb's and that was when it was dearer as well!
Now onto CIS supply on some, OEM carts on some and Brother Original
on some others that need a better paper chucked through them..
Talking of which, if it will help anyone get over the poor reviews about the
paper jamming [blahblahblah] we have only used Xerox Performer all weights
and all sizes, with no issues in anyway.. yes a few sheets get stuck now and
then, but that is just to people not fanning the paper reams a few times and
then putting in the trays..
Hope that helps [a little!] with on the fence buyers.. after all, an all singing &
dancing A3 duplex all in one that actually works with Google print all the time
for £99.. is priceless!

if anyone is after a mono laser printer with scan and copy option i can highly recommend the Brother DCP 1610W. Bought it from Viking for around £70. Really easy to setup and works like a charm.

Noooope they have chips on them now so you'll have a to buy a chip resetter and even then it won't work if the ink level on them gets too low before you try and reset them.
So many assumptions being made on this thread it's ridiculous.
That's like saying a focus has the same chassis as a MK1 Escort because they have 4 wheels and suspension. "same components with updated hardware and software."
What does that even mean? the components ARE the hardware.
Different ink cartridges, a different print head with more nozzles and a greater surface area, a different motor and gearbox to move both the print head and paper feed faster because it has much higher print speeds than a 10 year old model. They didn't even make models with an A4 feed on the front and A3 on the back 10 years ago and the form factor is totally different than the full A3 models.
Apart from that it's identical though.

Used to sell these at work, i'd say 75% of them got returned because they couldn't feed A3 paper properly without it going askew, you'd wait for a boarderless A3 photo print only to find it was on the wonk and has a white bit of blank paper all along the edge. There just physicially isn't enough support on the rear paper feed to keep the paper stable until it is deep inside the machine, the feed doesn't support the paper at all and you have to hold it or support it some other way because the tray is only about a quarter as long as the paper.
That aside they're not bad machine but suffer from the same fault as all Brother printers in that the paper feed is not very robust and struggles to pick up thicker paper and struggles to grip on to many finishes of paper. All arguments aside you just don't get the issue as much with HP, Canon and Epson. The print heads are also prone to sudden electrical death.
We were a Brother approved retailer and we'd never sell them again because out of all the brands we've sold over the 12 years Brothers come back the most.
