same battery is on eBay sold by same company for 35.99 after purchasing paypal recipet showed payment was taken by Eurocarparts which is same company as carparts4less and usually most stuff is cheaper on carparts4less with free delivery but the One so ff ebay is again under a different seller id not sure why they do that i suppose they have clicked in that some people pay extra just for a well known name and some dont so they just have multiple names anf charge different prices bit of a con and a waste of time for people to find the cheapest price's

If batteries fail prematurely, it usually means that the battery has been sitting on a warehouse shelf for months on end. Try and buy from a company who gets a regular turnover of stock. Just a tip! A battery hates sitting about uncharged.

Also about my above comment, when I did research into batteries for my car, a lot of research, Johnson Controls made pretty much all the batteries of this type in the UK. They have 3 levels of performance and you can see this over different brands models. I think they change numbers about slightly on the cases for some, but if you opened them up, I'd bet that a cheap no-name brand would be the same as a Bosch or Varta inside. All use the same outer mouldings. I went for the cheapest with the longest warranty. The price for this Bosch is still excellent by the way.

I used halfords battery checker on my car reg and it gave me the largest possible battery that would fit.
As its a diesel car and need a lot of power to start it in the cold i opted for a 800cca varta f18.
At -15 temp it fired up as if it was a summers day. That was after i had prised the boot open and climbed through as the doors were frozed shut.

Why are people arguing about this offer. Its a good price for a battery is it not ???.

Tom, my comment did not relate to 'topping up' Yes, I remember the days when you topped up lead acid batteries with distilled or de-ionised water. Rather, I was referring to the word 'CHANGED'. I certainly had never heard of people changing the water (electrolyte) in a car battery. The thought of tipping out what is still relatively concentrated sulphuric acid invites all sorts of risks.

7 Feb 16 #65
No.It is you that is completely wrong. You should read your own contradictory answers. Water in a sealed OR unsealed lead acid battery is not lost due to 'evaporation'. That is just naive. Other than by spillage, loss of electrolyte is due to GASSING! Simply explained, gassing is the production and release of bubbles of hydrogen and oxygen generated by the galvanic action of the battery during charging. Sealed batteries are designed to retain and recombine these gases. If you know otherwise, I'd be interested to hear your explanation.

my S4 is now 6 years old, and playing up a little as have to charge car once every 2 weeks as really dont use it, so £50 for delivery of a new one, so cars ready to use when I need it is a bargain, will wait for the slightly warmer weather to fit it as well as having to fit all new collant pipes and currently routed across the battery terminal so 2 jobs could be done in one day

Depends on your car I think. The cold cranking amp seems to determine the price. For instance the cca required for my car is double this battery, so the price is around double.

Sorry for probably a lame question, but would this fit honda civic 07 plate? Or does it simply work with any car? Cheers:)
Zimmy to Elbandito
7 Feb 16 #61
Not necessarily, you need to get a battery that will physically fit in your car and terminal connectors as well as the load rating etc. Best to look up your car on a battery supplier's or car parts website.

I got one of these Bosch S4s a few years ago thinking it would be good but had to return after a year and the replacement barely lasted the warranty. Never let it go flat as it does not seem to recover. My current Exide has been much better and lasted longer already!

You're welcome.

Q1. Yes, if my calculations are correct.

Q2. No significant difference. Only scenario I can see it having any effect is if you leave the dashcam running when you park. Assuming for the sake of the calculations that it consumes 500mA, that 5Ah difference would give you ten hours more operating time before the battery is too weak to start the engine.

Believe it or not but Bosch don't actually make car batteries, neither does Duracell or Varta. Most batteries in the world are made by Johnson Controls, Exide, or GS Yuasa then rebranded. You can potentially get a cheapo generic eBay or car parts supplier battery that's the same as this for even less money.
waqasahmed to got_the_feelin
7 Feb 16 #56
Sure you might get a cheapo generic battery, but then at the same time manufacturers make different versions. I concede that some of it is definitely down to marketing, however some models are genuinely better than others (despite being made by the same company) Sharp makes almost all TV screens (Unless it's changed now?) Zanussi make almost all washing machines. They make both good models and bad models.

they advised me last month when i went in for a new battery for my mums car was not to buy them, and that the most batteries they get returned with problems are the S3 and S4, and only the S5 is still made in germany, not sure how true this is,. I've had my S5 for 6/7 years now and I've had no problems with it, so can only recommend the reliability of that one.

Which is exactly how so many big businesses get away with licensing out their name to all and sundry - people see brand names and think it's worth paying out extra. Like a lot of legacy 'branded' stuff sold these days the only thing Duracell car batteries have got in relation to Duracell is the name on the packaging...
SFconvert
6 Feb 16 1 #50
Car battery life is mostly determined by how it is used and how the charge is maintained. Even a cheap battery should last 6 plus years as long as the charge level is maintained. The reason for battery failure is due to sulfation of the plates, which accelerates when the charge level drops below about 40 or 50 percent. So if you use your car for short journeys or leave your lights and flatten the battery, and then don't fully charge it afterwards, it will take a lot of driving to get the charge back. You won't be aware of the low charge rate as your car will still start OK, until there's sudden cold snap and it will fail. By that point it is generally too late and a new battery will be the only option. The more expensive batteries, ie those with 4 or 5 year warranties contain silver / calcium coating i believe on the plates which helps to resist the sulfation of the plates, so they can take a lot more abuse and should last much longer.

Paid £110 for a fitted Battery from the AA when mine failed one winter morning after 5 years from new. Saying that, the load my car puts on a battery, surprised it lasted that long. This looks a bargain
Ricky302
6 Feb 16 #44
Actually he's completely correct.
Really? I'd say the numbers would be in the millions.
No he's right and you're wrong, a drop in the battery fluid level is caused (provided that there are no leaks) by evaporation of the water in the electrolyte mixture.

6 Feb 16 #20
Can't confirm if it matches my car on the website, but I think this is the same battery I paid over double this price for last year (RAC wanted over £100 I think), so absolute bargain on first sight.

Update. Finally managed to put my car details in and as the cold cranking amp is half the CCA on my £90 Bosch battery, not quite the bargain I first thought.
porca to Askrulous
6 Feb 16 #43
The RAC did indeed fit these batteries, I had one nearly 4 years ago and it was £80, however it failed to start my car twice this year, so I looked at my guarantee, it was for 4 years and the RAC replaced it with no quibble, with a Varta battery.

Do you know if topping up the de-ionised water in a battery would increase the CCA of the battery? My car battery seems to be on the verge of not being able to crank the engine up, especially on slightly colder days and was wondering whether replacing the water would help. Having said that, my car is 12 years old and is still running on original batteries. It's only recently I've noticed a slight struggle in the startups. When the car is running, my instrument panel shows the voltage as 14.2V so that looks healthy.

Thanks.

Wow, I should have checked before I replaced mine last year.

I can vouch for the Toyota one because although I was cursing mine for dying, when I opened the bonnet I realised it was the very battery that was installed at the factory 11 years earlier.

6 Feb 16 #35
Thank you for that. So, just to clarify, the 5Ah drop from the old battery to the new would only mean that under a 400A load, I would get 45 seconds less operating time? Did I get that right?

How will my onboard devices (dashcam, stereo, car's electrics, phone charger) be affected?
Please pardon my ignorance...

Either you are just wrong or you didn't read the comment properly.I would think there are very few vehicle owners that don't know what topping up a battery means, even though it is years since any new vehicle had anything other than a sealed battery that doesn't need topping up. So your explanation of that was wasted. As for changing the water, probably referring to changing sulphuric acid, in that he was right and you were wrong. That is exactly how the life of older batteries can be extended. Before sealed types became the norm, it was common practice to empty out the old (weak) acid, wash out the battery with water, and then fill with the correct specific gravidy acid, bought from any battery shop, and , oh yes, checked with hydrometer(fsold by Halfords).

My car currently has a battery that says 50Ah - 410
This one has 45Ah - 420.
As I understand, the cranking power is best if it is higher (420>410), but can someone please help me understand what the first figure means and how bad would it be if I had 5Ah less?

TIA
sylv to aian
6 Feb 16 1 #25
Ah = Amp hours. A 50Ah battery could supply one amp for fifty hours (or theoretically 500 amps for six minutes). The Ah tells you how much energy the battery contains, and the CCA tells you how quickly you can get that energy out.

At 400A, 5Ah would last you 5/400 hours = 300/400 minutes = ¾ of a minute = 45 seconds. It's a few more starts (though if your battery is down to its very last 5Ah it might not be starting anyway).

No it means distilled water/ de-ionised water, some batteries need topping up when it becomes low, the reaction when charging turns some of the water back into oxygen and hydrogen so you cells would run dry on water.

Of course in our throw away society sealed units are now the norm.

Had one of these fail with five months to run on the four year warranty. Thankfully I'd retained the receipt (and noted the date by labelling the battery as I installed it), and once they'd tested it themselves and verified it as a failure, the merchant (Sutton Auto Factors) promptly swapped it. So glad I'd not saved a few pennies by choosing one with only three years cover!

Decent price - have some heat. Have to question the car-sense of whoever writes their marketing 'blurb' "you do not need to top up OR CHANGE THE WATER" ! It's a long time since I topped up a car battery, but I have never 'changed the water' in one - by 'water', I'm assuming they mean sulphuric acid!

Also a comment on the life of OEM batteries Passed on my wife's 9 year old Focus, still on its original battery; sold my 7 year old Mondeo diesel - again on its original battery (and original exhaust systems still on both cars too). However, the original battery failed on my son's Fiat at 4 years, and the battery in a friend's 2010 Saab 9-5 failed at 3.

Can also suggest Tayna as a good place to buy batteries online.

have to say I'm a fan of these batteries, we bought a car new in 2008 much to my horror the OEM battery failed within just 4 years, swapped it out with a bosch and still starts better than it did from new! never known a car battery to fail when its driven 40+ mile everyday, guess that's Italian batteries for you

if anyone is on the look out, eurocar parts seem to do Duracell ones cheaper than most cheap batteries and they also have a 5 year warranty, never used one but I can't imagine them being bad
