Precisely, the original version was built from the ground up because to have used any of Valve's assets would have been illegal.
They are now able to use Valve's assets but they have to pay royalties on that. If you don't want to support the further development though then you don't need to buy it.

The free version is still around, paying gets you a better version only possible because you pay allowing them to officially license and pay for things like new voice assets. Good case for going to a pay model in my book, certainly better than the better part of a decade dev time it had before.
The game hold it's own today but story? Scientists open portal, **** hits the fan, government tries to cover it up, survivor escapes and kills enslaved/enslaving aliens

Wasn't this a free mod a few years ago? Did they add/improve a lot to the game?

It was but it has changed a lot since then as Valve officially allowed and endorsed it.

I think he just posts on here to antagonise people to be honest.
He has been on my ignore list for around 2 years already and every time I unhide one of his posts I regret it.

Yeah sorry life isn't all fluffy awesome bunnies and stuff. Would you like me to provide a link to all my positive comments just to prove a point or.....
You're no greater fun at parties wheeling out the "you must be fun at parties" line that's already been wheeled out 257 times already on here to everyone who harbours a more realistic sense of the way the world works. You do actually realise that...right?

Are you this cheerful away from your keyboard? I don't think I have seen you post a single positive comment on this site. You must be a riot at parties.

I picked this up in the Xmas sale or one before that, I haven't played it yet. I'm still waiting for them to add Zen to get the full experience. Looks like a good remake though so I'm glad I've picked up a copy for the inevitable release of zen.

Again I never played the original so I don't have any nostalgia for the game at all. Heck if it wasn't for it using the Half Life 2 engine and resources I probably couldn't have stuck through it till the end. I loved HL2
Jump-Crouch, Jump-Crouch, Jump-Crouch.. Kill a few soldiers, solve a puzzle room. The plot is laid out at the beginning of the game and the story doesn't advance up until the game ends (before Xen). Honestly the game felt tedious and at times I was just playing to complete it rather than enjoying it. Well at least you have the mystery of the Pizza in Black Mesa
Like I said, it's really a game of the era.. Great for those wanting to re-visit old memories, not so great for newcommers pulled along by the hype train.

Still no Xen? Jesus they've taken their time with that. Seems steep to me having played it all the way through for free?

I've tried a couple of things on the Rift but not HL2. I don't think I have enough spare underwear to handle Occulus Headcrabs tbh.
Ravenholm can be bad enough on just a regular monitor.
You need to try it on the Rift, the Manhacks are terrifying!

Little to no story? I think you may have been playing a different game - its story more than holds its own today.

Big deal. All mods change and evolve. It's just most modders aren't greedy enough to charge money for them. Oh what a shocker that as soon as Valve approved it : "money please". They're so in it for the love of gaming, bless them.....

And if so how does it play gameplay mechanic wise to the original?

I haven't played it since its first mod release but it pretty much plays like an episode of Half Life 2.. I never played the original Half Life so I can't compare it to the original.
If you're a fan of Half Life / Half Life 2 it's probably worth a punt. But if you're like me and the Half Life 2 ship has long sailed or you never got into the Half Life series it's probably not worth it. The mechanics and graphics are dated and there is little to no story. It's a game of the era. Please correct me if the story / game design has changed since the original mod release.

It's a pretty faithful remake, with changes only for the better to modernise the feel of the game somewhat. I played the free mod all the way through several years ago now, it was in an excellent state already back then and pretty much fully featured with very few bugs that I encountered. Very polished. It looked great and ran great, albeit ending before the game actually finishes on the Xen level. One would assume it's even better now.
You can still get the free version BTW.
