Personally I love my iPhone because I love iOS. Android is horrible compared IMO. An old iPhone will probably run iOS faster than a higher horsepower generic phone running android. When you buy an iPhone you don't have to worry about phone spec even if it's dated compared to these garbage Chinese brands.

Who compared iphones with garbage chinese brands? Android phones are made by some of the top mobile companies in the world who are as innovative as Apple (imo). Android runs fine for me, I own a smart ultra 6 (a Vodafone phone!!! Which isn't even top of the range!)

As a genuine question as I don't use iOS myself, what can you do on it for running a business that you couldn't do on a high spec Android?

iPhone 6's are made within China, but as with the decent Android brands they are designed elsewhere.

Whether people prefer IOS or Android is down to individual taste. Owning an iPhone 6 (work provided) and Galaxy S6 I can acknowledge the benefits of both. I personally prefer the Samsung, but my wife and daughter will only ever consider Apple.

hopefully you iphone 6 users (i've a galaxy note and couldnt be happier, used to have an iphone but outgrew its limitations) arn't like my mate Dave. He's a nice guy but is really arrogant when it comes to his iphone 6. He thinks all people who don't have iphones are chavs etc. When he noticed the recent apple debacle about error 53 (see below link if you've not heard about it) his very words were ... why would you take your phone anywhere else but apple (paying up to 250 quid) anyway to fix the screen or home button. People using a third party are either chavs (he likes that one) or theives that have stolen the phone in the first place. When I pointed out that apple don't even bother pointing out that you'll brick your phone when you update the o/s his reaction was ... 'Well so what' .... I pray for the day he breaks his screen so I can see his little face .... I'm not an apple hater, I'm really not ... but I do think they're losing their way a bit .... and I bet the 200,000 or so bricked iphone 6 users arn't as enamoured as they used to be ....

Personally, I'm not an Apple lover, though I do have an iPhone for strategic reasons.

There are two sides to this: on one side, I think your friend Dave needs a reality check regarding his attitude towards others who don't own iPhones or those who do that prefer to take them to third party repair shops. Everyone is entitled to choose what product, vendor or repair shop he/she chooses.

That being said, the Error 53 issue is more than just about Apple trying to control who repairs iPhones. While I know Apple does facetiously try to control who repairs their devices, there is also a security side to the Error 53/Touch ID issue:

Imagine if a rogue repairman has identified a way to or has procured a product that can intercept Touch ID-based communications/transactions and installs it instead of a genuine button or installs some other malicious component in the phone, the risk to the user and potentially Apple could be immeasurable.

Sure, there may not be any known vulnerabilities such as what I mentioned as yet but I'm sure something could potentially be in the pipeline or be developed already. Blocking Touch ID on a device that has been repaired by a third party repair shop could mitigate this risk or even discourage the development of such a product (unlikely knowing the nefarious minds out there). Sure, having to stick to an authorised Apple repair shop is inconvenient and expensive for users but compromising data, especially now that some banking apps support Touch ID, could be more costly.

Apple's biggest fault in this matter is not telling customers before the point-of-sale. For this, Apple should be fined and made to compensate affected customers while including a clearly-visible disclaimer on retail boxes and their site, etc. However, Apple should also be applauded for taking steps to ensure the security of their devices and their customers' data, especially following the iCloud disasters.

I was pleasantly surprised this week that it cost £106.44 to replace the screen on my daughter's iPhone 6S direct with Apple in one of their stores in around an hour. Less than a year ago I sold a Samsung S5 belonging to my son because of a smashed screen that was going to cost significantly more. I didn't make an exhaustive search but I know that Currys/PC World wanted £216.44 for the same repair to the iPhone. Not too unreasonable to go back to source and maintain the warranty I think.
mcsmik to zoopakev
12 Feb 16 #71
if you had an iPhone 6, a phone less than 2 years old, why would you take it to a third party service centre if apple would fix it for free? Yes they state 1 year limited warranty but still fix phones under consumer act. My relative had her phone replaced just recently - it was 15 months old and no apple care...
benhawkins to zoopakev
12 Feb 16 1 #141
You are completely misinformed. The error 53 code is due to tampering of the touch ID finger print sensor. It is there to protect people as without this countermeasure savvy people could access the card information stored on the phone. A legitimate screen repair at an apple store is £99. Not £250.

Didn't know about that one. Ouch!

To be fair, of all the phones I've owned I've never had to get them repaired. Maybe I'm lucky. Maybe it's because I keep them in a case in a pocket and don't drop them on a regular basis.

I guess the question coming to mind is the % of iPhones that need repairing? Gut feeling is with a £500 phone with expensive repair costs, insurance is a good idea.

TechBB to BoroDan1
11 Feb 16 7 #31
Which version of iOS does the Vodafone Smart Ultra 6 run or which iPhone model is that?

Perhaps someone looking at this wants an iPhone and isn't interested in the smaller sized versions like the 5C, etc. I'm sure most, if not everyone, who's not insane and wants a smartphone is aware that there are many choices out there, including phones that cost £50. There may be a variety of reasons a person may decide those other options aren't sufficient for what they want.

Don't assume that because the Vodafone Smart Ultra 6 may be suitable for you or all you desire that the same should apply to everyone else. After all, aren't we all individuals?

Well yes and no. I run my business off a different phone. I could do it off an iPhone 6 just as well.

But if you look at the marketing that Apple have used with all their products, it has been selling a brand - yes it does the job and does it well, but it's the 'Apple experience' you're being encouraged to buy into.

The big Android players do exactly the same these days (Samsung, LG, Moto etc etc) - that's where the money is, so who can blame them.

I'm not bothering to highlight the phone I use - make model, brand or colour. It's my business phone. It does the job I require it to do. That's all I care about.

It seems on the forums, plenty of people care about all the aspects. Just wish they wouldn't argue about them the whole time :sunglasses:

One day apple users will realise the world is not flat and you don`t need to pay stupid money for a phone.Apple charge stupid money to upgrade from 32gig to 64gig or even 128 gig, a 64 gig micro sd card costs £2 if you could put it into a apple phone but you cant and the sheep keep buying them......
TechBB to kaycollitt
12 Feb 16 6 #48
I also don't think there will ever be a day when people who make biased comments like "One day apple users will realise...." will ever admit in the same comment that there are Android devices out there that cost the same as Apple devices when they launch, although they end up costing probably 60% of their original price a year later, unlike Apple devices.

There will probably never be a day when said people also state in the same comment that many people like to change their phones between 1-2 years and either lament or rejoice when they go online and see how much they can expect to get for their 1-2 year old used device. Can you guess which category is more likely to have Apple users?

Most unfortunately though, I don't think there will ever be a day when people will stop trying to tell others what they should and shouldn't desire.

Look, every time an Apple device is posted on HUKD, broken records like yours start playing. However, the people who play these records miss one very glaring point, amongst others: the only phones that run iOS are iPhones!!!!!. Newsflash!!!!! What if a person does not like Android or Windows Phone and doesn't want to touch BlackBerry with a 10 ft pole?! Are you saying that everyone should worship at the feet of Google or Microsoft begrudgingly?!

Some people want an iPhone... end of story! Do you love your phone? Brilliant! Do you love every single thing about it? I doubt it. I feel the same way about my device of choice: iPhone. Don't like it? Stop looking at iPhone deals then! It's really that simple!

Picard123
12 Feb 16 #46
People on here don't have a clue. How can this be hot? £500 for a 128gb 6S would be a good price, but the 6??

"The iPhone 6S is built of a completely different, tougher material than the iPhone 6. Meanwhile its screen, while identical to look at, contains a new input system that will have a pronounced influence on phone design over the coming years.

3D Touch is a great new feature that's easy and fun to use, and which speeds up pretty much every basic smartphone activity.

Talking of speed, it's almost alarming how snappy the iPhone 6S feels. The iPhone 6 was no slouch, but the doubling up of RAM, significantly faster processor, and markedly improved Touch ID system makes its successor feel tangibly faster.

The iPhone 6S is flat out better than the iPhone 6 in several ways that matter, with only a slightly tubbier construction going against it. If you're in the market for a new iPhone, it really is worth the extra money if you can afford it."

What could you do on a high spec Android for running a business that you couldn't do on an iPhone. Some people like wedges; some people like fries; some people like ketchup while others love mustard; some people like flying, others prefer sailing. Which is better? Neither. Which is better for the individual? His/her choice.

I don't subscribe to the notion that iPhones and iOS are better than another device or operating system and certainly don't take the view of some others in the Apple camp that everything else but Apple is rubbish: that reminds me of comments some people who swear by BMW make.

In my field of expertise, I deal with all types of devices and think there are some great devices out there across the range of OS and manufacturer. I just don't get why there always has to be a competition amongst buyers about which device is king of the hill. Surely, that's for the manufacturers and their stakeholders to worry about.

The "Error 53" issue highlights one of the reasons why it's always a good idea to at least part pay for any expensive item with a credit card. As long as an item is over £100 and you pay piece of it with a credit card, you can make a claim against the credit card company for the full cost incurred on the item.

For example, if you bought this phone (or this threads current favourite: the Vodafone Smart Ultra 6 :sunglasses:) and paid for the item on a credit card or was able to pay in store just £20 on a credit card and the remainder in cash or a debit card, you could potentially make a claim against the credit card company for the full £499 or £115.

Section 75 only covers goods up to £30,000 but Apple hasn't released the iPhone 10 with 100TB flash memory as yet so you should be good :smirk:.

I would suggest that anyone with the "Error 53" problem speak to Apple. If that doesn't work, contact Apple in writing (could be email) complaining about the issue and the fact that Apple did not disclose this beforehand. If that doesn't work and you've paid part or all with a credit card, try filing a Section 75 claim. You may need to contact Citizens Advice for guidance and who will be able to point you towards some template letters.

The more people that raise this as an issue and contact Trading Standards, the more likely it is that action will be taken against Apple or the retailers. You may have to tackle your retailer instead of Apple from a legal and strategic perspective. Even if you didn't purchase the item with a credit card, I would still advise that you contact Citizens Advice and Trading Standards if you encounter this issue.

I have a 64gb iPhone6 and I love it, best phone I have owned to date. I also have a Smart Ultra 6 which is a fantastic phone for the price. Both Android and iOS are great in there own ways but I personally trust iOS security more for my day to day use and banking etc.

This is a bargain as I paid full price on launch for my 64gb. I know it's expensive but worth it to me.

I have a specific question about this deal: does anyone know if the phone will sim-lock to the 1st network provider linked with the phone?

I was under the impression that ONLY apple sell full sim-free unlocked phones, which allows you to change the sim (and network provider) freely.

Has this changed, or does it still apply?
m0rphine to oliversthomas
12 Feb 16 #60
An unlocked iPhone is an unlocked iPhone. The only ones that lock to the first SIM you put in are ones designated as locked, Apple sells these with SIMs. But if you buy an iPhone from actual unlocked stock, it stays unlocked when you put a SIM in.

Not really, as your phone keeps receiving updates for years and years [4S was released in 2011 and runs iOS9]. Unlike Android phones that get out of date basically in 1 year for most part - depending on the manufacturer of course. No point in arguing. People want people to have the same opinion as them - it's the root of human conflict and - unfortunately - part of the primal area of our brain. It's what causes wars, religious hatred and fanboys.

The most common trend I've seen at the moment is to shout up that 16GB is 'simply not enough'. I have a 128GB phone so, sure, it's not enough for me; but I wouldn't say it isn't enough for everybody. Not everyone stores things on their phone. Half of my family manage absolutely fine with 16GB.

The table below is a bit old now but the point remains, unless you buy the Nexus range of Android products the level of post sales software support is woeful. iPhones are supported longer and have better software. The Android spec monkeys can quote amounts of RAM, SD card support or removable battery 'features' all they like.

Silly, pointless, misleading graph. Try running iOS 8 or 9 on an iPhone 4. SLOW AS HELL. iOS9 on an iPad Air slows it down and cuts the battery life by 39%. And you cannot go back once you've upgraded since Apple stop signing the f/w.

"Samsung has again sold more phones than Apple worldwide, this time in the final quarter of 2015."
"Samsung shipped 81.3 million phones during the quarter, compared to the 74.8 million shipped by Apple, according to the research firm Strategy Analytics." [MARK SULLIVAN 01.28.16 4:08 PM fast company article]

i would love to see how many of these 81.3m shipments are of the top end device, Apple massively outsell samsung top end devices. i'd guess 5 or 6 to 1 minimum

Unless the moisture sensor(s) had been triggered - which is incredibly easy to do, then they won't fix it regardless of the fault. That's when phone insurance is useful as it will cover liquid damage.
w_orbit
12 Feb 16 #114
Noone can argue with that. Not only do Android manufacturers generally put a shoddy skin (touchwiz anyone) on top of the OS they make the people who purchased their devices wait an inordinate amount of time for a software update - due to the shoddy skin. If indeed they continue to provide updates at all - even security updates !

See that's where your money goes, decent after-sales support.

(An android user btw..)

Oh and try moving from one Android device to another and having it set up exactly the same, all apps, data etc. I was so impressed recently when a friend with an iPhone upgraded and it just restored itself from the cloud without any fuss what-so-ever. Although I still hate iTunes!

Remember, it's only over-priced if you can't afford it.

I live for the day this site goes back to being a deal site. These arguments are just so pointless. I use both iOS and Android (though only stock on Nexus 6 or near stock on OnePlus 2 and X and lots of Apple devices. I like the iPhone 6 as my daily phone (have this 128gb model) as I find it can last me a day and a half because I can managed the GPS etc more easily, and it integrates with my Macs well. I prefer android on my other devices as I can install Kodi etc and the open nature of android (especially the Pixel C i own and love!) Is this a deal? YES Is this a very good deal as it is from an official shop? Yes = Heat. I do exactly the same for android or PC as this is a DEALS not opinion site! Offer your opinion on the product if it is informed not because you hate Apple/Google/Microsoft/Linux (delete as appropriate!)
jazzuk777 to cantonbean
12 Feb 16 #140
One could argue quite convincingly that it is not an opinion that iPhones are overpriced, it is a fact. Objectively, the only thing that Apple has to justify the price hike over an Android phone is iOS (as hardware is basically the same), so you'd have to show that it is worth a large premium to say otherwise? This is not about hating iOS (although the little experience I have with it makes me seriously question why anyone ever says it is easier to use than droid), it's saying really there is nothing in it to justify up to a 50% (more?) premium over essentially similar hardware (same goes for Samsung actually!)

This is not trying to start an argument, it's just trying to demonstrate that people may criticise Apple for good reasons and that maybe the accusation that Apple is a lifestyle choice is somewhat valid and why it rankles Apple users..

Voted hot because I want people to buy these. Anyone silly enough to buy these doesn't deserve the money and should just give it to Apple anyway. Hopefully they will do something better with it. At least part of the money goes as tax (not that apple pay corporation tax). The government should really tax iphones at a higher tax rate since their fans will pay anything for them

Erm not true - Marshmallow allows adoptive storage so apps can be installed on SD card if manufacturer has enabled it (mine has). And I don't have the facts to hand and I don't really have time or inclination to find source, but I have heard some say elsewhere on HKUD (is that better than man down the pub told me!?) that onboard storage is not always necessarily faster than a good fast card. (mind you if you have a 16GB/32GB onboard storage that's enough for the apps for most people and you can just use the SD card for the GB-munching stuff which works just as well)

I have an iPhone and an Android tablet.

Iphones are pretty good for the Apple brand stuff, imessenger, facetime ect. They are also usually fairly well put together (at least from my experience) but I find android infinitely better for a true computer like experience.

iOS can do some cool stuff and the popularity means it has a wider range of peripherals but can't do half what my android device can.

Yeah, you wouldn't want any of that Chinese-built garbage when you can have a lovely iPhone, built in, oh, er....never mind.
cantonbean
12 Feb 16 #148
On that basis you could argue that any android phone that costs more then a Moto G is overpriced as regardless of build quality, camera etc it has the same functionality. Again your point has zero relevance to the deal because regardless of if you think an iPhone is overpriced you should still vot the deal hot because it is a very good price for the product. I still vote hot if I see a good deal on a Samsung phone even though I'd rather burn in hell then use touchwiz on a daily basis. You see why your bias regarding the price of the product rather then the price of the product vs elsewhere is exactly the problem that has taken over hotukdeals?

Spot on! Why let facts get in the way of a good sensationalist story? As I've got 3 bank cards linked to Apple Pay I'd rather have this in place! When android pay launches in the UK how long until we see this negative story suddenly be a credit to Apple for anti fraud?
jazzuk777
12 Feb 16 #152
No I don't think you could on that basis say that. I don't agree it's pointless to point out that you can get 99%of the phone for 50% of the price therefore even a reduction doesn't actually represent value overall. For example many very cheap phones still rightly get voted cold because they are so poor they don't actually represent value either.
Dadofwheelie
12 Feb 16 #153
If you can't afford the outlay try mobilephonechecker (https://www.mobilephonechecker.co.uk/Apple/iPhone+6s+64GB.htm) at £31 a month and £75 initial payment, you get unlimited text and calls plus 3GB of internet. If you don't like Apple then you can also check the site for an Android phone.

Hmm I get a discount there that puts it to £460 but that's still a heck of alot of money (well for me). Tempted though.

Yes it is because what you think is a good deal doesn't mean everyone else has to go by your standards.

Can you get this exact phone in exact condition somewhere else for a cheaper price? No? Then it's a deal. It's that simple really hence this site is called "Hotukdeals".

A bit sad that so many non IPhone users go to an Apple deal only to say how better they are because they think something else is better. Get over your self.
kgman
12 Feb 16 1 #159
Jeez, what a crybaby. I didn't say I was better than anyone. Ok, it's an amazing deal, iPhone is the best, Steve Jobs is the Messiah blah blah blah. You iPhone owners sure are emotional when it comes to people criticising your beloved Apple products.
cantonbean
12 Feb 16 #161
No it is pointless because you're still putting your personal belief in front of the simple fact that what constitutes a deal on this site is a saving compared to the same product elsewhere not compared to what you believe is better value. Unfortunately you are just one of the many. Don't take that as a personal insult but I've been using this site for so long and I miss when people just voted on the deal and didn't keep reposting the same deal as soon as back in stock on some heat hunt!

12 Feb 16 #162
My partner had a galaxy note (I can't remember the version maybe it was the 4) and that was very buggy. It used to crash and restart all the time including mid call. Presumably the core Samsung's are decent and it's just the fringe models that are cobbled together?

One of the reasons I like iPhones is they rarely seem to have lag or slow down like some other makes of phone. My wife is still using my old iPhone 5 and despite the battery life being... Erm... Poor? The phone itself switches between apps like a rocket and scrolls feeds and information with no noticeable lag at all. My friends Galaxy S3 on the other hand is atrocious!

I think that's Samsung for you, not Android. My wife's S3 was crippled by the last update too. Not noticed the same with her LGr any of my Motorolas. I didn't keep my z1 long enough to notice. The main justifiable criticism of Android is probably that fragmentation means unpredictability of that.
