That's kind of a false economy though. You can't use it like any other 4K or 5K monitor, and 5K monitors aren't particularly common other than in the Apple machines, so the prices are in general higher.

If you want a decent 4K monitor you can get one much, much cheaper - and larger! There is a difference between 4K and 5K of course, but probably not one that justifies the premium.

And if you are one of the people who can justify that premium, you're probably better off getting a standalone monitor rather than buying an Apple, because it just happens to have one built in.

It's like the difference between 1920 x 1080 and 1920 x 1200... the market has kind of standardised around 1920 x 1080. For most purposes, I prefer 1920 x 1200, but it's really not worth the premium that comes with buying something off the beaten path.

I have a 2011 iMac 27" with just a 1TB HDD, but with upgraded ram and a still very good i7 processor. Last year I used an external thunderbolt adaptor from seagate in which I docked an SSD, which now runs my OS and main apps. I still use the internal HDD for storage. Great solution - has made my fairly old imac feel brand new. The adaptor is easy to find off ebay, or you can buy a ready made external ssd drive with thunderbolt port. Link below on how to format the SSD to run the OS:

Yeah you can in about 5 minutes. The screen is held in with magnets and you just pop the glass off and then a few screws out the surrounding frame- lift the screen out and you can get to the whole computer

can upgrade the ram but disk is tricky as they are sealed. Has plenty of io and thunderbolt for external HD.

17 Feb 16 #14
We've got a few of these at work and they have a 5400rpm disk, so slooooow by todays standards. We found performance is OK for general stuff, but anything disk intensive causes headaches, where machines were logging off and on a lot (we had them on reception desks where staff rotate), they would often lock up completely and require a hard boot. The newer models with SSD's are a massive improvement.

Unfortunately, as noted above, replacing the disks is nigh on impossible as they are sealed units.

On a more positive note, they handle the update to El Capitan nicely!

17 Feb 16 #16
Great price. The lack of Fusion drive is a shame, though I still find their performance appalling compared to a proper SSD. Using the latest model in the office but the 5K display didn't blow me away, however the difference becomes very stark if you go back to the older 1440p/1200p models.

if you edit 4k video - the 5k makes a big difference (not just apple 5k). You can have the 4k image/video plus the tool bar for the editing all on screen
wild_quinine to JC82
17 Feb 16 #46
Yes, I do somewhat agree with this but we're talking about a specialised need there which is probably best fulfilled by a specialised set of tools.

The kind of person who "needs" 5k for video editing but would satisfied with an i5 is... well. That's a niche.

Thanks very much. This is the first post that actually explains why you might have a real need for a 5K display, rather than just bragging rights. I'm sure that this is a fabulous bargain for someone who:

Will never need to upgrade any components

FocusST
17 Feb 16 1 #44
I managed to bag one just as it rolled round to the last 2 available, should get it next week. So thanks OP, been looking for one at a decent price for the past fortnight and the best my own IT supplier could do was £1400 ish!!

I've thought long and hard over moving to Mac from over 30 years of PC use, but my whole system is Apple based now from iPhone to iPad so it makes sense to unify them all as my current PC system doesn't sync well with my phone etc which I need when out on business. Mine is purely for business (graphic/development/iOS Dev) so not too bothered about gaming, or anything else.

Need to start learning the new ways now.
JC82
17 Feb 16 #48
Yeah I would be more interested in just the screen (in my opinion the best looking 5k one out) but would need the additional power
sdutton007
17 Feb 16 #49
Screen might be good but the rest of the spec is appalling for the price. Plus the display is probably awful for Windows use so you'd be stuck with a lousy OS.
GDB2222
17 Feb 16 #50
I'm viewing this on a 1920 x 1200 monitor, and the extra 120 vertical pixels makes a difference when viewing two A4 pages side by side. I'm rather tempted to upgrade to a 4K monitor, but I think that 5K is OTT for what I do. Pairing a 5K monitor with a so-so CPU and hard disk in a box that can't be upgraded .... I'll pass. But, for someone desperate for a 5K monitor, this is good value.
GDB2222
17 Feb 16 #52
Surely, you have just voiced an opinion there?
sdutton007
17 Feb 16 #53
Wouldn't buying a 5K monitor make viewing two A4 pages worse?

And is it even possible to use this as a monitor for a decent computer?

BTW, be advised that 4K screens are below 4K resolution and can't actually display a real 4K picture.
sdutton007
17 Feb 16 #54
Wouldn't it make more sense to get a £800 5K 27" display and a £200 computer? Would be better than this and cheaper!
GDB2222
17 Feb 16 #55
I use a 24" screen, and a 4K or 5K 27" screen ought to be better for viewing detailed documents. The problem is that windows isn't that brilliant at using the extra pixels. Or so I have heard, as I haven't tried using a 4K display on my system.
GDB2222
17 Feb 16 #56
It wouldn't work, as you need a decent graphics card to drive a 5K monitor. A 4K monitor and a very decent PC is manageable.
deano777
17 Feb 16 #57
Well obviously, my point is this site is to find deals which are cheaper than the norm, if someone has nothing constructive to add to a deal then don't bother. It's always the same when it comes to Apple/PC, Android/iPhone, Phones from china and car threads also.

The majority of people want to read through the thread to establish if it's a good deal not if someone likes the hardware, phone or car.
GDB2222
17 Feb 16 1 #58
Well, I always also want to hear what the downsides are. I agree that reiterating the usual comments that Apple is overpriced is not helpful, but other comments can be very helpful: such as that this box can't be upgraded. I don't think it's rude to the OP to say things like that.
sdutton007
17 Feb 16 #59
I meant that the aspect ratio wouldn't be nearly as good - it'll be shorter & wider at the same size. But going from 24 to 27 will probably cancel that out.
sdutton007
17 Feb 16 #60
You really don't need a decent graphics card to run 5K. A radeon r7 will be way more than enough.

EDIT: I was running resolutions well over 1080p over 12 years ago on a GPU that certainly wasn't top of the range - if a crappy GPU can't cope with 4x the pixels 12 years after, something is seriously wrong.
deano777
17 Feb 16 1 #61
Sure, the box can't be upgraded is fine, (although thunderbolt external SSD is possible). But the generic Apple is expensive (I can't afford it) / Android is better / iPhone is better is pointless and just trolling. Useful information for potential buyers is what is needed.
sdutton007
17 Feb 16 #62
Typical nonsense from an iSheep. People who say "Apple is expensive" say it because they buy better devices that can do more, have far better build quality and give so much more choice and customization CHEAPER. It isn't because they can't afford it - it's because they've made a smart informed choice not just followed the crowds.
FocusST
17 Feb 16 1 #63
I do laugh at the arguments from PC lovers and I get it to some degree, mainly when I was younger.

I have spent my life buying the best IT and electrical hardware, always buying the top spec "just in case" you need to be able to modify it, use a particular feature etc etc.

When I was younger I used to worry so much about ensuring I had a system that could be tinkered with. And I'm no technophobe, I have built all of my past PC systems from the ground up and my current Windows system was built 13 years ago and has never failed me. It's only being changed now as XP is getting slower and slower and more insecure - I was reluctant to change it even when XP was phased out as it has always worked so well. I spent £1300 building this system in 2003 with all the best bits money could buy "just in case" I wanted to modify or upgrade it, and for all that expense the case has only ever been opened to clean it inside when the graphics card starts to fail due to dust!!

As I get older, I am not bothered about "tinkering", I want something that works out of the box so I can spend my free time with family and my kids and I need a system that can link with my iphone for when I am out and about without having to sync data through Outlook, iTunes etc.

I love PC's, Windows in particular I have always enjoyed, but I love Apple products equally as much and at this stage in my life this iMac will do me very well and for less than my current system cost.

Technology goes out of fashion so quickly that it doesn't matter what spec you get 12 months down the line.

I know a self built PC would be cheaper than this iMac, but the amount of time I would lose building it and sorting out issues would be greater than the financial value. A PC would also probably be faster on paper, but in real life 9-5 use it makes no difference, I'm coming from a Pentium 4 2.4 with XP here!!

Plus it's just a business expense where these days £1000 is relatively little, I used to pay more than that in office rent, rates and eleccy each month!!
deano777
17 Feb 16 #64
If you actually read the comment I was referring to then you would understand the my comments relevance.

Better build quality that's questionable.
If someone wants an apple / iOS device and someone posts that a non apple / iOS device is cheaper then that doesn't really make any difference. The OP and subsequent people who got this deal wanted an iMac, posting that a PC is cheaper isn't an iMac. By your logic I could just post on every PC/Apple thread that a PiZero is better and cheaper.
GDB2222
17 Feb 16 2 #65
There might be a group of people who 'just want a computer'. They might see a post about this imac getting hot and not realise that it's rather a specialised bargain. Do you really object to someone warning them?
deano777
17 Feb 16 #66
True, if the "just want a computer" group are already looking that would suggest that they have that amount of money to spend and are happy to spend that much. It doesn't take much to scroll down the page and find a cheaper "computer" offer if they wish.
FocusST
17 Feb 16 #67
Better, cheaper, faster, smaller, bigger - they all mean nothing unless you know the context in which the system will be used and why someone wants to use them.

I cut my teeth on systems that were state of the art back in the 80's/90's, but would be outdone by a digital watch now. But they were fine at the time, and for anyone who "just wants a computer" an iMac would still be fine in whatever form it is.
Payoneer
17 Feb 16 #68
On a common sense note, isn't the Dell 5k monitor priced at around £1000? So this is an equivalent monitor with a free computer. Clearly this is a hot deal?
sdutton007 to Payoneer
17 Feb 16 1 #70
You can get it for around £800, and a PC of this spec for around £200 but it would be upgradable and far less restrictive.

It's a good deal if your PC MUST be Apple branded and be 5K, otherwise there's better options.
sdutton007
17 Feb 16 1 #69
I fully understood your comments relevance (or lack of). You just used it as an excuse to make a snide remark.

Better build quality - depends on brand, yes. Cheap chinese ones will be worse, but most brand-name phones have better build quality than an iPhone. I'm still using a 3 year old Galaxy Note 2 that has been dropped literally dozens of times really hard onto concrete and it's still perfect - can't say that with an iPhone!!!

"By your logic I could just post on every PC/Apple thread that a PiZero is better and cheaper." - No, you clearly don't understand logic. Can a PiZero do more than a PC? Is it essentially a better alternative? No.

Some people might come here because they specifically want a Mac (and usually have more money than sense) - but others will come here because they might want a 27" 5K computer. Many people on here won't know the restrictions of Apple devices or the fact that MacOS can run a tiny fraction of the programs a "PC" can run. People still even believe that Macs are better than PCs for CAD/CAM/graphics/etc when the advantage came from the RISC processor they used to use (but had it's own disadvantages). Since they switched to x86, that advantage no longer exists.

I do agree that there are two many trolls that come on just to say "Apple/Android sucks" or whatever. But there is a big difference between being a troll and pointing out that you can cheaper/better alternatives which may be a better fit for others.
FocusST
17 Feb 16 #71
I've had various iPhones since day 1 and dropped them plenty of times without any problems. I've had other phones as well that have been equally as strong, but I prefer using iOS on a phone.

I've spent quite a lot of time researching this and I've found equivelant or better programs for the Mac to replace the ones I was using on PC, so unless you are referring to something specialist, 99% of people buying a Mac will be fine. But then I haven't used it in anger yet so I am happy to eat humble pie on that one if I find an issue.

I also work in the graphics/dev industry and 95% of the colleagues I deal with on a daily basis use Macs so I'm not sure I agree with your comments on my industry, even developers are moving over to Macs now, especially for App developers.

I stand to be corrected though as i will be new to using a Mac and I'm sure I will find problems that need to be overcome.
sdutton007
17 Feb 16 #72
I have used literally dozens if not hundreds of apps that do not have an equivalent on MacOS - admittedly, I am a power user but there is no way I could do what I want to do on it. Even Apple allow you to install Windows on it these days because they know Windows can do more.

The only reasons people use Macs for graphics are tradition and lack of knowledge. Look into it yourself if you don't believe me

The way I look at Apple vs PC/Android is:
- If you want a sophisticated device that can do everything at a reasonable cost, go PC/Android
- If you can only work one button, only need to do basic things, value looks above everything else and your wallet is weighing you down, definitely go Apple.

I will say though that Apple customer care is 2nd to none - I just find the devices too basic for my needs.

I only need a text editor, browser and a SQL editor to do my job so anything is ok with me, the fact that an iMac also syncs my mail, contacts, drive, calendar and photos with total ease is the winner for me. The cost doesn't matter if it does all of that.
