Its interesting people are downvoting this even though its cheaper than a GTX980 at that price and that is coming from a GTX960 owner myself. Might need to change the company name next time!! :stuck_out_tongue:

Plus OcUK,is part of Caseking which is a large European computer parts retailer and when my first GTX960 was DOA ,OcUK refunded it quite quickly too.

Wow. I never expected them to drop the price that much so quickly. HBM must be much cheaper to produce now.
I see absolutely no reason why anyone would buy an Nvidia GTX 980 over this now.
I have already linked to it but there is a great benchmark video in the article. Also, you can add 5% performance to the Nanos performance as the video was made pretty crimson driver update.
http://www.gpunit.com/index.php/2016/01/13/a-fair-fight-amd-nano-vs-nvidia-gtx980/

Also, if you are concerned at the stories of some GPU's including Nano this might help understand what coil whine is and that it is not actually a fault of the product.

You begrudge buying an adaptor or two for this price.
Ok then.
Also if 4K 60fps floats anyones boat club 3d adaptors are on sale now I belive. Should hit 60fps or there abouts at 4K with medium settings on newer titles.
Otherwise it's absolutely max settings at full HD for a while yet. This is one powerful GPU for itself.

Seriously good value for a small top end card. Something to consider though is that these tend to throttle a bit so you won't get max performance consistently - need to have a full size fury for that.

Sorry, it's actually a pretty loud card. Both fan-wise and due to loud coil whine (source: I own one).

Heat for the deal, though. Great GPU.
Ferrari100
23 Jan 16 2 #14
I have owned one. Why are you running at 100% + power and not using FRTC??
Unless you put this card's load over 95% (which still puts it on Par with a GTX 980) power there is zero coil whine and the card runs at 38 decibels.
As this card maxes everything out at full HD and nearly at 1440p most users will not even hit 95% setting FRTC to 60fps (which most people are happy to play at.)
Use it with AMD Frame rate target control and it is an issue that will most likely never arise.

Actually, FRTC is very beneficial with this GPU to keep it at 95% power.
GAVINLEWISHUKD
23 Jan 16 1 #15
There is plenty of evidence (especially in the launch cards) of coil whine issues. How much it anoys you is another issue. As for fan noise this depends on installation. If its in a tiny ITX build under the TV where the fan is next to open mesh then you will here it. If its in an ATX tower with 2 front fans and two top fans and a rear fan and the PSU only cooling itself then you probably won't here it.

It all depends on the system. Fans don't bother me. Coil whine and pump whine do.
Ferrari100
23 Jan 16 1 #16
At people pushing the GPU at 100% power there may well be.
But 95% and lower. This card is quiet as a mouse.
Thanks to AMD exceptional FRTC (Frame rate target control) where user get to set maximun FPS rates it does not happen.
Of course reviewers will push this as far as they can. Its their job to. The Nvidia GTX970 does exactly the same thing. Problem with that GPU though is that the fan noise cranks up at around 85% power.

Believe me or not but I was one of the first with Nano and coil whine was only apparent when I was pushing it as far as possible. Normal gaming loads there is no issue.

This GPU is a no brainer at this price and there is not one viable reason to go for an Nvidia 980GTX now.

GTX970 has plenty of coil whine issues btw:
http://wccftech.com/nvidia-gtx-970-coil-whine/
GAVINLEWISHUKD
23 Jan 16 #17
Well naturally fan noise increases at higher use. Locked at 60fps at 1080p I would expect it to stay very quiet as its not being pushed too hard.

As for coil whine it seems to vary from card to card. Some will be considerably worse at high loads. But equally I have had both GPU and motherboards that whine at stock and others that are known for whine to not. Sadly it's pot luck.

Voted hot as very good price. Very comparable to US price.
sportsgeek88
23 Jan 16 2 #18
This is false and misleading. I get coil whine even at below 60 fps, so FRTC doesn't help. Just because you didn't experience coil whine, it doesn't mean that it's not a widespread problem and to suggest so is dismissive. I just thought I'd give this information to potential buyers. I love my card, and the coil whine doesn't annoy me. However, it is very loud and can be heard noticeably above the case fans which people should take into consideration.

At no point did I argue with the performance, however. Brilliant card (>stock GTX 980 performance) in such a small form factor.
Ferrari100
23 Jan 16 1 #19
It's not false at all. I was one of the first in the country to have one and I reveiwed it.
If you cant accept that then I am sorry for you but it is a fact.
If it is an issue it means you are maxing it out at 100% and should use FRTC in Amds catalyst control centre.
Why have your GPU genrate 80FPS at 100% power when you are only playing at 60FPS (Like most people)
i.e - Use Frame rate target cantrol and set it to 60FPS. This will have the affect of saving power and keeping fan noise very low by not generating frames that are of no use.

May I recomend you go find out exactly what FRTC does as it seems you are not aware of it's benefits.
sportsgeek88
23 Jan 16 2 #20
Nothing you just said is a fact. It's like you didn't even read my last comment. The only fact is that I and many others have bad coil whine. Just because you don't proves nothing.
Ferrari100
23 Jan 16 1 #21
I know it is there, as I have already clearly stated if yoiu open your eyes properly, at over 95% load.

If you are clueless as to how to prevent AMD Gpu's from generating more Frames than is necassary and refuse to beleive what is is capable of that's your issue.
Its called FRTC. Read up on it.

sportsgeek88
23 Jan 16 #22
Did you read the part of my comment where I said it happened even under 60 fps? No? Oh, I guess that renders your FRTC argument useless. Just to spell it out for you: FRTC doesn't help (for me, maybe it does for others). I've tried it.

As I said, yours might not have had coil whine. But mine does badly. If you can't cope with that I can't help you.
Ferrari100
23 Jan 16 1 #23
then send it back as you have a faulty one. Dont tell everyone that they are all bad becuase they are not. You are the person here fighting the situation, not me.
If it happens under 60 fps you are playimng a game that utilizes requires 100% performance so try scaling it back to 50fps and see what that does - If you still have an issue and your GPU is running at 95% or less then send it back.. Seriously it's not rocket science.
And FRTC is a great feature and it does work.
sportsgeek88
23 Jan 16 1 #24
I haven't told everyone that they're bad; don't put words in my mouth. I love my card, as I've repeatedly said. I just want people to be aware of a widely reported issue. It's been mentioned in pretty much every major review and should be a consideration.
Ferrari100
23 Jan 16 #25
And I have provided a work around you don't want to believe and are saying I am wrong.
I have gone out of my way to discss a solution I know 100% works and you are trying to call me a liar.
Thats the only disgrace here.
Most reviewers, unless you can prove me wrong, will have been pushing Nano at 100% and not even using FRTC.
Most users will, after realising, use FRTC to not only save on their electric bills but to reduce fan noise and any coil whine at the same time.
Even Far cry at ultimate settings run at 60FPS Full HD without any coil whine as did GTA5 when FRTC was set to 60FPS
rev6
23 Jan 16 #26
RTSS frame limiter is another solution. I get much smoother frames and GPU stays cool.
hitman007
23 Jan 16 #27
So you can't use the full potential of the card? You need to scale back to 95%.
Ferrari100 to hitman007
23 Jan 16 1 #28
You can if you don't mind the coil whine or loud fan noise.
Also some people say that coil whine is drastically reduced if your PSU has enough power but I never tested that.
Positioning of your PC will have an obvious effect on whether these things may or may not bother people.
95% still beats a Nvidia GTX 980, just, - and then you know it won't go over 38 decibels too which is whisper quiet.

All high end GPU's are in exactly the same situation. Nvidia GTX970 coil whine at load is ridiculous. Check this Nvidia 970 out:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gLU8rVqEBA8
and an Nvidia 980:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cqewc_uX714

Exactly the same thing with these. Lower the FPS to prevent the card running at max power and it dissapears.
People seem to have gotten t in their heads that if a GPU has coil whine they always have it regardless of how much power they are consuming.
This is false.
Both Nvidia and AMD high end GPU's have this issue.
sportsgeek88 to hitman007
23 Jan 16 1 #29
Don't listen to him, he's talking nonsense. Why would anyone buy a card to not use its full potential? The coil whine isn't a major problem, but could be annoying to some. See the following article for details about the problem:

Ferrari100
23 Jan 16 1 #30
I give you 10/10 entertainment value.
Thanks
IF you do have a GPU that runs at like 80% and still whines you must be in a minority and can only be called, to put it politely, stupid for not getting it replaced.
sportsgeek88
23 Jan 16 1 #31
I don't need my intelligence validated by a keyboard warrior. Many people have returned them only to have 3/4 replacements have the same issue. To some vendors, coil whine isn't grounds for return either. And, yes, mine does whine at 80%. I don't know why you don't believe the reviews of dozens of sites. At least my card doesn't whine as much as you.
Ferrari100
23 Jan 16 1 #32
You do realise that all gpus run at full power unless you target control them, something review sites don't do in the limited time they have to test review equipment as they want to review maximum capability. A gpu will render as many frames as possible and discard what they don't use regardless of game settings or maximum refresh rates - unless you tell it to do otherwise.
And yes I am a keyboard warrior.
I gave a degree in computing and IT so that is a compliment.
Thanks.
I bet you are running full HD 60fps and are completely unaware you are unnecessarily wasting electricity on rendering frames you will not even get to see.

P.s I am not the one whining here.
;-)
sportsgeek88
23 Jan 16 #33
Yes, I am aware of that. I also think review sites know that too and also substantially more than you. I'll repeat again because it doesn't seem to be sinking in; just because your card doesn't have coil whine doesn't need that at least some don't.

It's cute that you feel the need to mention you have a degree in computing. I have a PhD in physics, and am a lecturer at a university if I need to validate myself that way.
sportsgeek88
23 Jan 16 1 #34
And now I'm aware I'm being trolled. Well done. It's clear from your twitter (https://twitter.com/ferrari100) that you're an AMD fanboy. Don't get me wrong, I'm team red but I prefer a balanced opinion to blind-sightedness. I was simply trying to inform people that coil whine is an issue for many, and you're pulling an apple and claiming we're "using the graphics card wrong".

Anyway, I'm done tired of arguing. Let's allow people to draw their own conclusions. Hundreds of reviews vs. Ferrari100 hmmm...
Ferrari100
23 Jan 16 1 #35
You say to people to make their own conclusions after you say that 3/4 are faulty. Very funny
Am I supposed to be impressed or upset with the fact you with located my twitter account with exactly the same name I use here?
I think everybody here is already fully aware I do not support Nvidia but highly rated Intel and AMD. How much of your time did you waste digging up that information BTW? Nothing better to do?

P.S if you are a fan of AMD you should at least know that FRTC works and is a great feature. Contrary to would you stated earlier.

3/4'so of all Nanos have coil whine issues constantly. Hilarious, you say you rate AMD yet spin those yarns.

Just so you know, since the video rev6 just posted, although a good representation, the Nano has gained a further 5% performance boost across the board. Having said that, if you have spent alot of effort squeezing the 980 into your case and taking into consideration further effort removing it and waiting for Nano - You might as well stick with it.
All I would say is monitor closely DX12 games when they start to arrive. If AMD do what they should and push Asynchronous compute to the limit in Console and sponsored PC title further performance gaps will ensue and Nvidia do not have hardware to use drive ASync effectively.

So, I'm a member of the overclockers forums. It turns out Ferrari100 is too. And he said on a thread that I saw just now that his nano had coil whine!

https://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18691612&highlight=ferrari&page=19

"Guys. I bought a PowerColor Nano and recieved it Monday.
Just doe 3D Market score when 10% catalyst overclock.
Not bad eh.
Small amount of coil whine at times but not as bad as a 290 when that gets going.
Bear in Mind the not sooo fast Intel i5 - 4460 doing the CPU work."
imdurc
26 Jan 16 #84
Uhm...didn't he already post that that would happen during synthetic testing, rather than during gaming with FRTC engaged? I also noticed he mentioned a 10% overclock. I don't think he ever claimed coil whine was non-existent.

Just trying to be fair here, not choosing sides.
sportsgeek88
26 Jan 16 #85
No worries, I'm trying to be fair too & am on neither side. He did say that it wouldn't whine while overclocked, but in my experience this isn't the case. Whine is more likely to occur during high frame rates, while synethic testing produces comparatively low frame rates. All FRTC does is limit the FPS, and so wouldn't unfortunately help if coil whine is present below 60 FPS (my experience). Mileage varies, but it's a minor thing to consider.
imdurc
26 Jan 16 #86
I know about FRTC as it's saved my sanity with games like Rocket League, Battlefront, Just Cause 3, etc. There are moments in those kinds of games where the fps ramps up to crazy highs during menus, cutscenes, gameplay, etc. (I have an R9 290X). Btw, I run a 144Hz monitor, so I like more than 60!

The only proper way for this to progress is for a random purchase of Nano cards from various places and testing them under normal gaming conditions. The problem with forums is that most opinions come from the ends of each spectrum, i.e. those with problems, or the ones with great enthusiast levels of excitement for a product. The people in-between are, well, few and far between!

Methinks it's time to end this debate as it will never get anywhere. Someone can claim one thing, while someone else will claim another.
