This should go without saying, but be sure to pop them in a PC and run WDIDLE3 on them before they go in a NAS

Great for storage, not as a primary drive. Heat from me

Probably the reliability (8.79% 2015) - second worse only to Seagate on hardware failure analysis.

Mainly because noobs buy them for primary usage. They're not meant for that.

I'm assuming you're referring to the backblaze stats there?... For starters they are using Western Digital Red drives in massive enclosures, when they should only be used in enclosures with up to 8 bays max...
It's a ridiculous source for stats IMO. They're using consumer drives for datacentre use and are somehow surprised that they keep failing... People really need to stop wheeling out these "failure rates" every time a hard drive deal gets posted.

Thanks OP, more storage for the backup NAS, ordered. Run the WD Red in the 'always on one', but these greens run 24/7 fine too

How many other industries/sectors/hobbies have derogatory names for people who don't know as much as you and why do you think that is?

Hmm I saw something about that on a thread elsewhere, what is that all about? Does it shut it off when not in use?
My 'NAS' actually runs Sever 2012 so I assume I can do it in situe
A drive failed in my old buffalo linkstatio running raid 1. Actually it's THIS device.
Would a couple of these drives be OK for an old buffalo NAS?

Still on at Amazon at this price, although out of stock at the moment, but can still place an order. I might double up just in case Debenhams don't come through
****! I checked last night and the option to order from amazon at that price had vanished! I wonder what sort of wait there will be though :/

The thing is, all of the posts I find are years old - is this really an issue on brand new drives? I have also read they wont warranty Greens if this has been run :/

WD are okay aren't they? I thought they were one of the most reliable
If their not reliable, who does that leave these days? I know Seagrave aren't very popular...

Haven't watched the full video but at 5 minutes it's probably overcomplicating things a bit. You can download wdidle3 from WD's site, but will have to faff about creating a bootable disc then. I tend to use something like hiren's boot CD which already has it included.
If you're putting them in any kind of array or using them in a NAS then it's definitely worth doing. If you're just using it as a single drive in a windows PC, then it's not all that necessary.

Dunno but Amazon normally come through on out of stock items, I can wait anyway, but it's sold out at Debenhams now, so I guess that's a good sign that they had limited stock, but have never ordered from this lot (it's a 3rd party 'buyitdirect' or something)
Matthaus
27 Dec 15#29
Yeah I noticed that as I placed the order too - there is some shocking 3rd party stories on amazon of drives with 15,000 hours of use!
Almost makes me want to cancel now and wait it out direct with Amazon. Last time I doubled up on an order of something I had 2x Moto 360 watches turn up as they both shipped at the same time so couldnt stop one hahaha

27 Dec 15#33
to be honest the drives in there have been running since 2008 and never missed a beat and I have used raid on several boxes using several brands and not had an issue, not really convinced that for a home raid I need to spend the extra on reds
You do realise that the different colours are just different testing processes that the drives go through depending on intended usage, the only exception is if the physical speed is different. The reds get a 3 year warranty too.
Don't get too hung up on the colour, the differences are negligible

All of them I suspect, but classing a HotUkDeals as an industry, sector or hobby is a bit weird.
Noob is no more derogatory than calling someone a "beginner", or "inexperienced".
Heat added for the deal, great price for a 3TB drive.

Bought on Amazon, I had some vouchers to use up. Not fussed when it comes, although Amazon are usually pretty good aren't they?
I'm only going to be using this as a backup drive, so nothing too heavy.
Thanks OP!

All of them? Like what? Examples of all these others then please.
And I'm talking about the PC/gaming sector, not HUKD.
Finally, "noobs" is widely regarded as a derogatory term. It's frequently used as an insult in competitive gaming, amongst other places.

Cancelled mine - they claim to allow cancellation before dispatch at no charge (?). Waiting for confirmation.
But I had ordered 2 just in case of problems and paid by credit card. The credit company is also responsible if something goes wrong for orders > £100
Amazon price now increased so I'll wait for the next deal.
