Having just got back from japan and having tried proper Kobe Wagyu, there is not a chance in hell these burgers will come close to proper Japanese Wagyu. As people have said farmers can buy the Wagyu sperm and breed it with normal UK cattle and call the cows Wagyu.

The difference however is in how the cattle are looked after, i.e. Proper Japanese Wagyu is grain fed, given beer and not allowed out to roam. The total opposite of uk cattle which are mainly free roaming and non grain fed which leads to a totally different type of meat without the extra fat in it (Nice fat though) that Wagyu cattle should have.

If you want the real thing sadly you have to pay for it and these just don't come close!

Wagyu burgers? Why? No matter what you stick in a shop bought burger, it's still going to be rubbish. Make your own using good old chuck steak and cook them pink, the way they should be made.

Yet the FSA recommends cooking burgers all the way through to kill bugs.

This is of course different for a steak where the bugs are on the surface, so leaving it pink in the middle is safe.

The voice of ignorance strikes again. People like you make me laugh. If a firm advertises a product as 100% of something it has to provide that. These are advertised as such. You are probably one of those Muppet's that think MacDonald's burgers are full of filling too and made with lips and hooves. Stop looking at American based websites for your information. We have totally different standards here in the UK and companies are expected to keep to those standards.
royals to mk8

Makes sense if using proper steak so you can cook it slightly pink. Just dont do that with a patty though, must be cooked well done otherwise you'll end up with food poisoning

18 Jan 16 1 #18
These are the tastiest burgers I've ever purchased from a supermarket, but each to their own. The taste is more from the seasoning, absolutely loads of salt in them as well as garlic & pepper. Not much water - they actually stay the same size when cooked.

oh dear someone believes the advertising.

These to start with are less than 90% beef so fair bit of filler there.
now to that Wagyu beef this is from a crossbreed cow which would of had a Wagyu cow somewhere in its family tree.
if they taste good then fine but if buying because Wagyu then probably best going to get a decent burger from local butchers.
joxeruk2000
18 Jan 16 #28
I watched a program about cheaper wagyu. Basically the farmer breads the wagyu cow with the normal cows and the meat from the new cow can be classed as wagyu beef.

Personally not had these yet but would like to see what all the hype is about.
gilders to joxeruk2000
18 Jan 16 2 #41
I also watched this programme.
I believe it can still be called wagyu 2 generations down the line. I.e. the only cattle that was a thoroughbred wagyu would be the grandfather/mother of the cow you're eating. You wouldn't called a crossbred offspring of a crossbred dog by it's pedigree name so don't know how they can call it Wagyu. These "wagyu" cattle won't of been brought up on the same diet and massages that true wagyu get.
vultura to joxeruk2000

It was Food Unwrapped, Series 6 Episode 2.

I have noticed that a fair bit of Beef advertised as "Aberdeen Angus" is also cross-bred and not 100% pure bred.

Just make your own burgers. Takes about 10 minutes at an absolute max!

You can limit the salt and fat so are a decent enough meal which kids never say no to.

I think mk8 means it's about the CUT of the beef - not the composition of it. A burger can be 100% beef (which may even be 100% sirloin). However, it will never beat a proper steak burger (ie a slice of meat, not formed from beef mince), as steak can be cooked pink in the middle. Next time you have a steak, stick some in a burger roll and enjoy. :sunglasses:
Besford
18 Jan 16 #34
These are quite good but a bit too salty for my taste.
royals
18 Jan 16 #35
Seems you are the ignorant one. A prime cut of beef is going to be far better than a beef patty made from the not as nice cut if beef. Additionally you can cook the cut of beef rare as the cooking process will kill the bacteria as it only resides on the outer edges. The patty however must be cooked well done as the bacteria resides throughout the meat. The cooking process as destroys the tenderness and taste of the beef which is why some people prefer their beef rare. However I prefer mine medoium well done with a tiny bit of blood as im not a vampire, lol

well burger is always burger, you can put truffle or caviar in a burger but it won't make it a proper meal. It's no more than a junk food or bar food...

I love these damn things. Last time they were on offer some bloke was emptying the shelf in front of me. Nice chap had rather big ears.

Anyway that's beside the point. These are a lovely burger - I don't care what they are made of. Its unlike a really meaty burger, sorta mild but tasty, no need to slap a load of cheese/bacon/condiments on them, the texture of them is amazing - and I'd have them over and over again.

Gimmie, gimmie now.

As far as I know the Champagne region doesn't have a designation for it's beef cattle although Charolais and Romonola are quite popular. Did you look at my link explaining the origins of the Aberdeen Angus cattle recorded in Scotland since at least the 16th century in the country's North East, or just spout off without full knowledge? shall we leave it at that before

Can't understand why people feel the need to click on the deal so they can post something along the lines of 'just make your own burgers, it's cheaper and healthier'. I could grow/cook/make/build a lot of things, but this isn't a cooking or DIY forum.
