Paying £62 for a battered old iPhone 4s with a 3.5" screen just confirms what I've long suspected of apple's customer base.....

once it nags you enough to upgrade to latest OS, it will run like crap, you would be better getting a cheap Android or Lumia , at least the hardware will be up to spec.

Grade C. It'll be barely in one piece.

This is the worst thing about Apple by far. This handset runs great on iOS 5, 6 and 7, beyond that it's unusable really. But the great Apple gods deem you can't downgrade so near-on brick your older handsets and devices. Even Apple evangelists, have no smart-ass answer for this.

The 4s is still a decent phone if you can find one running iOS 7.

Cool, the headphone port will probably riddled with crack. Just go on eBay from a reputable seller and pay a bit more.

4s isn't such a bad phone actually. Much better speaker than later iphones. I keep that one to catch up with TV when I'm in the bath as you don't need an external speaker.

Sweeping generalisation. I would imagine most of "apple's (sic) customer base" would agree not necessarily a good deal. Surely the majority buy new and this appeals to other demographics? I think these days people are enlightened and avail themselves of more than one system, using whatever they see as fitting their needs.

or you could spend £62 on a brand new android phone with "modern specs" that in reality runs like a battered 4 year old one.

Personally I wouldn't buy one, but if you have a kid who's friends all have iPhones I think its a decent deal, cheap enough not to care when they drop it down the toilet as kids no doubt do.

I would personally spend £50 on a new Android or Windows phone. Maybe hunt for a used iPhone 5/5s, I had seen these on Gumtree between £60 - £100 depending on condition.

main problem with old phones is the battery life the older they are the less charge they hold

At least in the 4s the battery is easy enough to replace.
I'd probably suggest the 4s is just too long in the tooth now to be buying either as a main or backup phone. I'd go for something like a windows phone that has 4g and a new healthy battery.
