The code works for any tyre I think. Tried it with the Goodyear and it works. Would anyone recommend this Uniroyal over the Goodyear tyre?

I was in their garage the day before and they said everything is fine, just drop the car tomorrow morning and give the keys to one of the staff. Simply they don't care at all about customers money and time.

That's bad service, did they not check for you if the tyres had arrived when you dropped your car off. As per website I always phone first so as not to have a wasted journey.

Nice tyre but personally I would go for Avon zv5, lasts a lot longer (25-30k on fronts) and are made in England. Same size for £50 each at Eurofit Auto centres (you can get black circles to price match which I did).

I'd they're related in any way to ZZ3 then sure, go ahead, unintentional awd powerslides in every corner are so much fun.

Avons were worst tyres I've ever had, those things should be illegal.

What's this talk of balancing? It's as simple as balanced or not. Any garage that fits tyres will balance your wheel (unless it's a real shady garage). All this talk of fancy balancing is simply a ploy to get more money from you.

I work in and around cars and trucks and this is the first time I've heard of "premium balancing", not surprised it's from a chain store too!

I run 255/35/18 tyres, any offers for that below £100 throw me a message

The one in the Barnwell road put me in a very bad situation (to charge me more). I left the car in their garage at 8am before going to work. I was told that everything would be ready (changing tyres) until 5pm. They called on my mobile phone around 4:30pm and said that they don't have the tyres that I had ordered online. They suggested me to get another pair of tyres (more expensive, without any off) or take the car and bring it again in another day. I had paid £15-20 (*2) for taxi that morning (from garage to Madingley road) and evening. So it did not worth for me to pay another £40 for taxi and not have the car for another day. I had to agree with their first option and be charged about £60 more.

I wouldn't use the one in Milton Keynes ever again, they 'balanced' re-aligned my wheels when replacing tyres but the steering wheel wasn't lined up. Then told me there was nothing wrong and tried to charge me again to correct the problem!
pavel76
14 Jan 16 #68
No way the will allow you fit wider tyres on same wheels...how load index can remain the same if you do that ? Yes, they usually allows different tyres but on different wheels at same time
PennyHunter
14 Jan 16 #67
I'm quite positive Larger/Wider Tyres don't effect your insurance, as they are actually safer due to the larger surface contact area.

The only time you will have an issue with insurance is if its bald when you have an accident or when you fit a tyre that affects the handling of the car; ie. Narrow tyres (Stretched) or when you have fitted over sized tyres, prohibiting clearance, causing rubbing on the wheel arch / arch liner which causes abnormal tyre wear..

The main legal problem with Tyres is actually the Load rating, this is where your Insurer will have an issue.

If you look in your cars handbook your manufacturer (not all) will generally recommend what size tyres you can fit, they normally give you 2 (sometimes 3) sizes to choose from (generally allowing a change of +/-2.5%)
pavel76
14 Jan 16 #66
There might be insurance issue if changing to non-standard tyres... Not worth it !

I currently have 195 55 16, anyone know if I'd get away with 205 55 16. They are so much cheaper!
Solly92 to sab
13 Jan 16 #6
You need to check the width of your rims to make sure 195 isn't already at the limit for that size. The tyre will be 10mm wider and slightly taller so there is (probably slight) risk of fouling on the arches or bodywork. You need to check your specific wheels and car but you can probably get away with it.

13 Jan 16 1 #25
Unless you've lowered your car severely (or already is very low) there should be plenty room under the arches to accommodate these, however it would throw your speedometer out marginally as the radius is slightly larger. If you took middle digits (tyre wall) down to 50 it would be unnoticeable on the clock, just need to see if they do that size
h0tdeal to sab
13 Jan 16 #43
probably.
We have an 07 peugeot 207 as above 195's were fitted standard but we found them a lot more expensive.

I asked a mate the above question and he confirmed that 205's would fit fine - which they do.

No rubbing or catching and it fills the arch better and in my opinion smoother handling but slightly worse but also negligible fuel consumption.
Ricky302 to sab
14 Jan 16 #53
They'll fit perfect, practically no difference at all.
http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa153/RickyBMW/tyre_zpszmatvads.jpg

As for balancing, the tyres on this were balanced normally.
Youtube
Colesy81 to sab
14 Jan 16 #65
Yes that will be fine, the difference in diameter is just 1.7% which shouldn't be a problem unless the car is lowered or the clearance around the current tyres is very low.

A tyre size calculator like this one is helpful to work this out:

Completely agree. I always get the 'alignment' call. Sounds much more impressive than 'tracking'. After a polite 'no thanks' they usually accept defeat.
In fairness to them they've always been polite & helpful, prices are usually the lowest I can find.

Is this better than the Goodyear or the Dunlop with very similar price but higher fuel rate?

Better grip but worse fuel or wear rate - depends what you are after. Lots of bad feedback about Goodyears from previous posts... so if you want good tyre with high fuel rate - go for Dunlops .

14 Jan 16 #54
Yes. I was reading some of this on another site earlier on, and decided it was a load of utter spherical things. What it forgets is your car is running on a real road which is probably cambered, with an irregular surface, the car has a non symmetric load, it's not always travelling in a straight line etc etc etc. Because of all these variables, the tyres are changing shape continuously which means that they're continuously going in and out of balance, in absolute terms.
"if the wheel is out of round......." is a cracker. If it's out of round, it should be scrapped.
You'd be as well contacting your nearest witch doctor and asking him to banish the shaky spirit in your car.
qbs
14 Jan 16 #52
But that's way beyond wheel balancing and unless you're continually hitting kerbs or potholes, it shouldn't be necessary. It's a good moneymaker but learn how to read tyre wear and you'll know if it's needed. They charge £2.50 a wheel so it sounds more like a con than anything else.

I think u can either balance the wheel off the vehicle, which is usually adequate, but I believe you can also balance the wheel whilst on the car, which would counter any additional imbalance in the brake disc. Maybe that is the difference?
qbs
13 Jan 16 #26
I'm trying to understand what can be done other than standard balance. Many years ago, I had a problem with balance that was only solved by balancing the wheels on the car, but that's not a common problem and I can't remember when I last saw the kit required to do that in a tyre fitters.
pavel76
13 Jan 16 #24
Any premium balance is just usual crap talking like at every big chain garage... you just going there for the best "standard" fully fitted deal and say "no, thank you" for any extra job proposed:)
tince666
13 Jan 16 #23
If you would need some fancy balancing surely most of the garages would promote this as some sort of extra service... Its common practice to include balancing in the fitment price and if the tyres are balanced properly you won't have vibrations in the steering wheel when doing 70+
japes
13 Jan 16 #15
standard balancing involves sticking magnetic weights to the wheels. Go over 60 and your car will shake and your tyres will wear faster. But go ahead and assume it's either balanced f
or not.
GAVINLEWISHUKD to japes
13 Jan 16 #17
They manually balance the wheel!!! It takes far longer than the machine. I thought only red necks still used manual balancing.

It's almost criminal.
pavel76 to japes
13 Jan 16 #18
If your car is shaking over 60 - it usually means means problems with steering or suspension.
I had many cars in my life(always cared about steering and suspension, checked wheel alingment) and standard balancing when fitting tyres was always fine... but if you drive a clunker, hmm
qbs to japes
13 Jan 16 1 #22
That's exactly what balancing is whether it's a road wheel or any other rotating assembly. How exactly do you think you can improve on that?
"sticking magnetic weights to the wheels" You think? Either crimped or stuck on. Never come across magnetic wheel weights and would be very surprised if they exist.

The difference between the 2 sizes are usually within spec , most manuals will state different tyre sizes for 16in. My almera takes 195 or 205 on 16in, both 55 or 50 profile is permitted but the 55 will be slightly more off on the speedo than with the 50. There are sites which tell you what size can be fitted and what percentage difference from the original.
