Uniroyal rain expert tyres 185/65/15 £31.35 + 6.95 p&p. Seems a good price to me as I need a couple of tyres and don't want naff ones so any advice would be appreciated.

It's only a hunch, but a tyre fitter?
VDisillusioned
5 Jan 16 3 #3
I had Rain Expert 3s on my last car and really liked them, very secure grip in all conditions. In the wet they were remarkably good. The only negatives I can think of is they tended to pick up stones and the car seemed to get dirtier quicker. The general consensus also is that they do tend to wear slightly quicker than some other tires, but I didn't think the wear was shockingly bad and was more than offset by the performance and low price compared to rival brands. I'm looking to get another set when the Pirelli P7s on my current car wear enough to justify it.

Edit: I just realised I had Rainsport 3s not Rain Experts, so most of my comment above is irrelevant. Doh!

Cheers I'm up to two cars so far a Golf MK6 and a Mitsubishi FTO, the FTO cost me £800 and I've spent about £2k on it lol. It's not awesome fast but for £800 it was the fastest thing I could find at the time. The fastest car I've ever been in is a Ferrari 360 with Pirelli P Zero tyres (see I'm keeping on topic : ) and to be honest that scared the crap out of me. An Atom would give me a heart attack I think!

Hi Fishmaster ..it's an S3...only about 3 S4's were ever made a good friend of mine Jane owned one for a while she sold it and kept her S3 and another S3 owner Richard owned an Atom for a while but again sold it (it frightened him too much  and kept his S3)

The S4 and particularly the Atom both out perform an S3 but the 0-60 time of 5 secs for my 19 year old s3 is plenty quick enough for me

I uploaded a clip from our 2014 Eurotrip to youtube where we came across some atoms....the aforementioned Jane is on clip in blue S3 and Richard in his blue with white stripe S3 K40 ...misty beginning is Richards cam...stay tuned for clearer bit from mine ..here is the clip https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xs75sKsvv-o

Sorry to op for this reply off subject but had to answer question.....heat given Tyres are ace.

Sorry for been newbie here.
As has been mentioned in many comments above, since we are not supposed to fit the tyres ourselves and the garages don't like to fit them for us, what do you do after you get those tyres?
VDisillusioned to yay110
5 Jan 16 #65
You phone up your local garage or tyre fitter and ask for a quote to fit customer supplied tyres. If they want the job they will quote you £15 or so per tyre, if they don't they will most likely not refuse but quote you £25 or more. So you then phone the next fitter, of your list of dozens locally, until you find the price you like and you get your tyres fitted. The only people who might really not want the work are dodgy garages who are too busy ripping off customers doing repairs and MOTs at ramped up prices to piffle about doing bread and butter work like fitting tyres.

Here's some to choose from http://www.tyres-pneus-online.co.uk/car-tyres-225-45-17.html# just remember to check the dpeed and load rating you require also. Btw the code FREEDEL used to work for free delivery.
Also use the refine search and select the best wet performance tyres for example.

You must be about 20 years or something. Hardly anything on the road up to as recently as maybe the early 90's had >205mm width tyres. IIRC on the mid 80's monster M635Csi my old man had (which was considered well rapid at the time it was new) only had like 220 width boots lol

Most hot hatches have bigger tyres than those these days.

5 Jan 16 #51
When fitting new tyres, you need them balanced, so as well as the cost of fitting, you have to pay for balancing and some charge you for new valve. Plus you have to take you tyres to the fitter. Far easier to buy your tyres from a place that does all that than mail order to your self.

In the good old days of crossply and radials it is illegal to mix and match. It is nonsense to say you should not mix makes of tyres if they are all radials and the correct size. It is more important that all your tyres have plenty of tread on them.

If you are on a budget then places that fit part worn tyres , including balancing and new valve for anywhere £10 to £15 to £25 each depending on the size . I find I am more likely to have to replace a tyre due to a puncture well before they wear out.
ActualMatt to Proveright
5 Jan 16 #58
As a matter or course I always replace in pairs and personally don't like having different tyres n/s and o/s. It is bound to make a difference so I don't think this is nonsense as you stated.

As for buying part worn tyres, now that is a nonsense!

uniroyals do provide good grip but they wear terribly and create quite a lot of road noise. Pirelli p zeros or Bridgestone potenzas for me all day long. In my opinion. Fitted to a Lexus.

Only 4K on a set of Rainsports does seem rather extreme. I had them on my heavy 250+ bhp, 360+ N-m car for about 4K miles and though I didn't measure it, by eye I reckon they were less than a quarter worn when I part-exchanged it. I was hoping to get about 15-20K. 15K would have felt slightly disappointing and 20K pretty good.
pavel76
5 Jan 16 #46
Rainsports are known for awful wear but they should definitely last longer than 4k... I agree with you that best possible grip is more important than other ratings

5 Jan 16 #28
Just taken a pair of these off the front of my Leon, the wear rate was shocking, I will be lucky if I got 4k miles out of them and that's just daily commuting 12 miles each way. The hankook ventus evo 2 I had on before lasted a lot longer and performed just as well.
Kulaak to Hou
5 Jan 16 #30
I would hope any tyre fitted to a car would achieve close to 30,000 miles if not another 5 to 10k more.
corred1964 to Hou
5 Jan 16 #32
I would say that is down to driving style rather than the tyres.....I've never got less than 16k from tyres....even on a Civic TypeR (and not driven exactly slowly)

When did you check wheel tracking last time ? How often tyre pressure used to be checked ?... There must be a reason and I think you rather have rainsport - not rainexpert model on your leon...

5 Jan 16 #45
My bad, they were rainsports not experts. When I had them fitted the tyre fitter warned me that they do not last very long
And very confused at those saying they get 30k out of a set of front tyres, I guess the cheaper makes are a harder compound but Id rather get the best grip I can for the very small contact patch a tyre has with the road. I guess you would get far more of motorway driving, my commute is a lot of roundabouts

I fitted a pair of Uniroyals (though they were Rainsport 3) to the front of my Grinnall Scorpion (see profile pic) last year after doing a lot of research.

The car always handles like its on rails anyway but now feels much nicer than it did with the previous Bridgestone Potenzas ..the grip is fantastic wet and dry.

Would definitely use Uniroyals again.

Yep they wheel spin awfully and I don't feel confident with them at all when it's cold and damp - eg most of the time in the UK. I don't drive aggressively, more swiftly and cautiously within the limits, but I didn't think much of the P7s in the summer and now it's cold I'm finding I have to tiptoe everywhere.

I had Rainsports on my previous car between the end of February until August last year, when I part exchanged it, and I couldn't fault them at any time for grip and stability. I'm longing to get a set for my current car but still can't justify it because the P7s are just not worn enough. You could say slow wear is the Pirelli's saving grace - but for me it's not because I'm keen to get shot of them

5 Jan 16 #26
Sound advice, but how can you tell badgerrules' driving behaviours from their post?!
Besford
5 Jan 16 #25
NEVER fit odd tyres across an axle, ideally not at all, even all radials. It may not be illegal but they are not going to perform equally and you put yourself at much greater risk of a spin if you have to brake hard. Still, I guess such messages mean nothing to people who won't even turn their lights on in the dark, put a seatbelt on or GET OFF THE PHONE!

I had a set of the Rain Expert 2's fitted on my daughters Punto 18 months ago for no other reason than they were on special offer. They have been excellent, and I can't say that I've noticed any appreciable increase in wear. Encouraged by this I had the Expert 3's fitted on my wifes car 6 months ago and they're even better, given the amount of rain we're getting in NW England at the moment I've just ordered a set for my Astra. Thanks to OP

Don't forget that some garages and tyre places in this country will only fit what they supply and others can and do charge quite a bit more for fitting tyres they don't supply. So that has to be factored in before buying abroad.

Do you find you can easily wheelspin your car with the P7s? My car has ESP, but it makes no difference if you have P7s on your car, you might as well drive on an ice rink. Also they seem to have a complete lack of grip in the wet. I should have researched it better, the P7s are hopeless.

These look good, have to be better than the pirelli cinturato p7 I have on my Golf now, they curiously seem to have been designed to be frictionless which I generally thought is a bad idea in a tyre. The single worst tyres I've ever had on a car ever.

These are outstanding tyres....I've run Rainexperts on my cars for years & the wet grip is amazing.....they do wear a little quicker than some but they are bound to given the grip levels.....the wear rates are nearer the H tyres I have run in the past than T's so possibly a slightly softer compound....effectively a premium tyre at a budget price....HOT
