You don't need the old dumb charger.

You can revive dead 'NULL' batteries with a unbent paper clip and a charged battery.

Unplug the BC-700 (important!), put the NULL battery in one slot, put a charged battery in the slot next to it. Connect the two slots using the paperclip for a second. Voila... battery is no longer NULL!
RickyL7
4 Jan 16 3 #51
Yes, just to clarify, connect the two + (positive) ends of the batteries with the paperclip (this helps "kickstart" the battery). You can google "BC-700 paperclip"... there's a good customer image on the Amazon.com review of the BC-700 which shows the paperclip trick.

I've also got an alkaline battery recharger, had it 10+ years. I still use it, but with the introduction of Low Self Discharge (LSD) Ni-MH I'm slowly replacing most of my alkalines as I can afford to. The alkaline recharger does work with the following caveats:
1. You can't recharge dead alkalines. For it to work, you need to recharge them BEFORE they are completely drained, which takes a bit of organization/discipline.
2. You can only recharge up to 10 times, I would say more like 5 times is more realistic.
3. Some brands of batteries when recharged are more vulnerable to leaking.

Once you get used to the way it all works, it's very useful and has more than paid for itself over the years.
Would I buy one now? No. Better to invest in LSD Ni-MH.

I currently use Lithium Polymer AA batteries rather than Ni-MH

Agreed concerning the alkalines. Essentially, alkalines (non-rechargeable normal ones, that is) can be recharged, but best using a pulse train rather than a continuous supply, and even then you’ll probably get about five useful recharges from it, and all that time you are at significant risk of it leaking (either during the charge attempt, or even, less likely though, once you start using it). I’d consider it a bit of a party trick, an academic exercise, or a last resort if you end up on a desert island (and a variable duty-cycle pulse generator washes up ashore).

Both the Lloytron and the 7Dayshop one were available just this morning on Amazon when I checked before posting(the Lloytron I think has gone up to £8.59, still under £10). I suspect they'll do fine for most people, who don't condition their batteries, just want to be able to charge the correct number and check for errors. UPDATE: this one claims to charge Alkalines too...

4 Jan 16 #58
Thanks, but whilst they're cheaper, they're both a bit intellectually challenged for 'intelligent' chargers. The one posted here, and most of the others at that sort of price level, allows you to specify the charging current channel by channel. 200ma is probably the optimum charging current if you want to look after your batteries.

The two you've posted will put in 1200ma for a single battery and 600ma for a pair, with no way of changing that. They're slightly better than ordinary chargers, but not, I'm afraid, in the same league as the one posted.

I placed 2 separate orders for this device with earlier firmware months ago and both arrived. They both seem to function okay. I did a quick search before ordering and I think a few forums on torches recommended it. So far I've had everything I've ordered from Gearbest show up (full disclosure - I've an order for about £2 worth of stuff that at this point I'm not sure will show up so I might have to contact them) and I've ordered quite a lot of low value stuff. Put the model number into Google yourself, see what you think.

4 Jan 16 #56
Yes they are known as intelligent chargers however:

The Lloytron one is not available on Amazon any longer. Also unlike the one discussed here it is not a conditioner, only a charger.

The same with the 7 DayShop one you linked to, it is not a conditioner.

The one discussed here which is available as a number of various brands including the now cheaper 7DayShop one I linked too has four modes of operation: - Charge, Discharge, Refresh, Test

that's a great tip Ricky, will give it a go.

Can I humbly suggest when you're describing these sorts of procedures though, that you make it absolutely clear when the device is unplugged and when it can be plugged in again. If this thread goes quiet and a couple of HUKD users are never seen again I'm blaming you... :-D

Thanks very much for this - I've a query (apologies if I've missed something obvious) so I turn the power off (OK), NULL battery in slot one, fully charged in slot two (OK), where do I put the ends of the paperclip to connect the two slots? Connect both positive terminals, negative on one to the positive on the other etc? Then I turn the charger back on without the paperclip and no NULL battery.
If you could clarify I that would be fantastic. Thanks

Hopefully this doesn't suffer the same major problem as the BL-700 - it can't charge completly dead batteries. Mostly when I use mine the batteries arn't completly flat but occasionally they are. You put one of those in and the charger just reads 'NULL'. Have dig out my old charger, put in in there for a minute before charging, which is a right pain considering the cost and 'smartness'.

There are charges which will "refresh" ordinary batteries a couple of times but it's much better to simply get some decent rechargeable ones in the first place

They've been around for many, many years, and the company that first marketed them in the UK made a lot of money for a while. They work, after a fashion, but there's very little point to them these days. The latest Eneloops are superior to non-rechargeables in many ways, and cost hardly any more. Why would anybody buy non-rechargeables in the circumstances?

Bought one of these just before Christmas. Great price, works well. Interesting comparison to the BC700 (apart from this having the additional 1000mA setting) is that the readout in Charge mode shows the setting selected for each channel, e.g. 200, whereas the BC700 displays the actual charge being applied, e.g. 197, 198 or whatever. Not a deal breaker, and perhaps a 'feature' of the newer BC1000 as well? The only annoyance is the batteries don't slip in and out as cleanly as on the BC700, they are recessed differently and some fumbling can take place. Otherwise, performance matches the BC700, individual channels and refresh modes, and it works fine
