5 Jan 16
If you register a Starbucks Card this month, you'll be a Gold Member directly. Usually you have to buy 50 drinks to get there.

Gold benefits:

*Free Drink every 15 drinks
*Free Extra Shots
*Free Syrup
*Free Whipped Cream
*Free Origin Espresso

Deal price 5 pounds, because that's the minimum amount you can purchase IIRC.

So just buy a card online and register it when it arrives? I needed to do this anyway as I have no idea of my card number, which is a PITA, but might as well do it now. Oh is it easier/quicker to pick one up in store? Still trying to understand how it works. :/
ETA, there's postage to pay if ordering a card online, so will try to pop into store.

The extra shots are really the only thing worth it since the coffee is so milky without them. But otherwise instant gold membership is great.

Yes, but it's also advertised on Starbucks.co.uk (second section)

Will take some time, check again tomorrow.

I see this as a negative reward as their giving you extra fat and sugar for free, wouldn't a free apple or banana be a better reward ? Adding whipead cream and or syrups doubles the calorific value ,sugars and fat of your coffee !
benjai to bigjeremy

You do realise you don't actually have to add the fat and sugar? Whipped cream and syrups in coffee is disgusting.

What are you talking about? I thought we were talking about tax? Which last time I heard, I HAVE to pay. I just don't pay more than I have to like starbucks. Do you? If you don't, why do you think starbucks should?
Newbold
5 Jan 16 #25
Ordinarily I'd agree with you absolutely. But Starbucks coffee is so bland, so tasteless, so insipid that more or less anything added to it (even shoe polish) tends to improve it.
MBCH
5 Jan 16 #26
Does it need to be an actual card or can this be via the app please?
Natbag to MBCH
5 Jan 16 #28
I think you can do it using the app, I did the first time I registered. Just make sure you take a note of the card number when you register, as they show it once only and then you can never access it again, which is a pain!
Natbag
5 Jan 16 #27
Got a new card, set it up, showing as green also. Will check back tomorrow. Haven't lost anything either way as I first registered on the app and didn't know my card number, which was making things difficult, so had been meaning to pick up a new card anyway for that reason.

Do you have to load £5 onto the card/app to get the gold or just register for a new account....?? Apologies if I'm being thick...!
Natbag to GeoffM1965
5 Jan 16 #33
When you pick up a card in store you have to load a minimum of £5, or at least I did. You can order a card online with less loaded (£1 minimum I think), but then you have to pay postage so not worth it.

You have to top it up (using the card instore on or online, or via the app) and pay using the balance - you can't just collect points like you would with a clubcard/advantage card etc.

If you are London based and want to support independent coffee shops check out dripapp on Android and iTunes. Let's you buy credits so you don't need cash to make a purchase.

For £89 monthly you can get unlimited coffee! If I was near one of the coffee shops at work I'd sign up. But I'd be constantly buzzing!

I can refer you so you get £4 free credit but don't think we are allowed to post referral codes?
Madchester
6 Jan 16 #56
Hey morons we are talking about coffee get a grip. They even make the card look like the back of a gold iPhone so you value owning one even more. Don't get me wrong I love a coffee, I have a proper bean to cup machine with built in frother not to be a part of a loyalty club for over priced coffee to a company that doesn't pay tax well that's bonkers

Now go and line up like good sheeple for your £3 coffee and don't forget your solid gold loyalty card!

Only kidding I think its really great, yeah I really do.

let's not get into the debate over tax avoidance abs evasion or whether avoidance is legally or morally and better or worse. it's about paying your fare share abd putting an equal share back into the local community/economy. if you don't like this or any companies policies/practices grumbling won't change it. hit them where it hurts in their pockets. it's only sales that matter to them

That's true, they don't have to due to the extremely complex world of international tax laws, however moral business practice suggests they should pay the correct tax that any UK only business would. Just because they have their money funnelled through an offshore account, doesn't make it acceptable.

If all large businesses paid the correct tax in the UK, the financial situation of the country would be extremely different. Oh, but free syrup!

Shame it only lasts for a year:

To keep your Gold level membership, all you need to do is keep using your Starbucks card to earn rewards. Collect another 50 Stars before your anniversary (the date you qualified for Gold Level membership) and you can keep enjoying all these benefits for another year. Even if you don’t, you’ll still be a Green Level member.

7 Jan 16 1 #75
Another benefit of being a gold member (I've had this for years) are the freebies and extra promotions e.g. free tumblers, drinks and bakery items - which I've posted previously on HKD :sunglasses:

#Grande Latte, two extra shots with hazelnut syrup

One tip to maintain gold level is to buy items separately... Every item (drink / bakery / sweet / biscuit etc.) will be converted into a star. Don't buy an entire round of drinks and sandwiches in a single transaction, as you will only receive one star.

How does it work nowadays?

I used to work near a Waitrose and went in there occasionally, I believe they changed the offer since I last got a free coffee. I thought it changed to be only free with a purchase? (Last went in one probably a year ago)
tapi
10 Jan 16 #84
Nah, always been free regardless. They changed it so you had to get the cups from the cash out, but no purchase necessary. Maybe you're thinking of the café? If you want to sit and drink you need to buy something.
