They brought it down to the same price it was at Currys for the 809C at the beginning of December. I been looking at the 805/807/809 for a while now. They all appear to be price matching each other up and down because the 805C was also this price at RS about the same time. Funny thing is the 809C has a better spec slightly than the 805c and that was more money back in early December in Currys.

I wouldn't let the problems that Sony have had with android and youview put you off. There are 100's of positive reviews for these tv's and the one thing you can't get with a comparative LG or Samsung at this price is the picture quality. The Sony blows them out of the water including the cheaper 4k tv's. 4k at this size will only be any good to you if you sit 5 feet or closer to the screen and that's even if you can stream 4k. If you buy a 6 series LG rumour has it they are not a true 4k tv anyway due to the extra pixel (the white one) that some of their sets have.

On a recent test of the 809C in Currys alongside an LG 49UF770V and a Samsung UE50JU6800 the Sony was clearly better when viewing SD channels for bbc1, 2, itv etc and also better on the HD channels as well. There was no indication of increased quality of the HD channels on the LG and Samsung.

When I set all three tv's back to their respective manufacturers usb sticks playing the high quality videos there was no difference between the 1080 of the Sony and 4k of the other two from about 6 to 8 feet away. The Samsung was slow and buggy through the menu system. The LG had a great magic remote and WEBOS 2 is a much improvement of the WEBOS 1 on my tv. The Sony had a sh*t remote which would need to be dumped had I bought one. Sorry Sony owners but I think the remote is terrible when looking at how my large LG and Samsung remotes are designed.

For value the Sony was clearly the winner also at £100 less than the LG and £150 less than the Samsung at beginning of December. The LG was no better than my current 50LB650v yet costing £150 more than I paid.

With all tv's there are pros and cons. No manufacturer is better than another unless you can afford to buy LG OLED but some models of tv's are better when compared with others. If you see a tv then don't buy it because it's 4k, 3d has all the smart apps etc etc. Buy it because it has the best picture when viewing standard and high definition freeview programmes, because that is how most of us view television.

Ive had a 4k (Sony x85c - retuned due to OS issues affecting the TV), and watching SD & HD is awful compared to the new 1080p I bought to replace it.. Theres not enough 4k content to justify putting up with poort quality SD/HD...

Id much rather have a decent 1080p than a cheap 4k or even a half decent 4k that has upscaled HD/SD which doesnt really look good!

I do (I have this exact model), and it's fairly poor. Has its uses but I remain largely unconvinced that it does anything better than most other proprietary Smart TV interfaces. The supplied apps from Sony, Google etc are all fairly basic, clunky (the iPlayer one is especially tragic) and don't have much polish, and there's not really much choice in the Play Store either other than an abundance of games and dodgy-looking apps that provide international TV channels. Plex works well, feels quick and smooth to use and is one of the few apps that actually makes good use of the "Recommendations" section to give you quick access to the next episode of a show you're watching, but most apps don't use it at all.

Then there's the various performance and stability issues of the Android OS itself (as well as the underlying Sony-specific interface which occasionally appears) which Sony are battling to fix. There's a reason there's so many offers on these TVs at the moment.

Picture quality is fairly decent though, when it remembers your picture settings at least. Still, it's better than my first one which had horrendous backlight bleed/clouding and had to be returned.

I got mine recently from warehouse deal. it is a fantastic Tv for £365, kodi works brilliant on it. it does occasionally crash, but not when your watching something. only when your flicking through the menu. Youview works fine. wifi takes a bit of time to connect, once connected it stays. that could be just my router. picture quality in HD fantastic, yet to try 3d as I don't have the glasses. I would recommend the TV.

Kodi does crash, quite a bit in my opinion. Does it on my phone and also on my amazon fire tv box. Both have different builds. It works but its not perfect. I may spend some time with it and design my own buid as a lot of the links don't work. Even the ones on the Beast with some that are unfinished which I find surprising.

I bought this for £480 using staff discount. In the end I returned it due to clouding/uniformity issues in the corners. Other than that it was excellent. Like many people who give this TV bad reviews I came from an awesome Panasonic plasma and I'm waiting for reasonably priced OLED.I wish I's kept my plasma. In the end I bought the 55" 4k version of the Sony on boxing day from amazon for £560 with student discount. At that price I'll put up with poor black levels for a couple of years!

these TVs are cheap for a reason.

also the reason for there being 100s of positive reviews is that Sony are filtering out the bad reviews.

but buy if you think it's a good deal, just don't forget to register here:

I got the 55" X8005C in the amazon lightning deal having upgraded from a 50W829. The picture is fantastic and I have had no issues whatsoever with the android operating system. Parts of it are really slick, including the application implementation. Some of the settings menus are difficult to get hold of and there is sometimes a small amount of lag with the remote. Other than that, no issues at all.

A lot of the reviews and scare stories were written before the updates were released, then idiots regurgitate this without any real world experience. I understand there were significant problems at the start but technology and firmware evolves.
Rich44
5 Jan 16 #23
How can you release a piece of consumer technology with "significant problems" they obviously knew they had a problem before release but went ahead anyway then continued to sell despite these issues.

I can't imagine why anyone would put up with this crap from Sony? They're a huge company why is it so hard to take a mature operating system & cock it up so spectacularly?

If they've can't get it right before release can't imagine they'll keep them up to date with security or OS updates....

Samsung 2015 seems to be faster now and best sd and hd upscaling comes from Samsung only in my opinion

I went 1080p, compared Sony 55w805c to 4k Samsung 55ju6800, side by side 1080 content was clearer on the 1080p screen. Also a lot of change to come with 4k with UHD2 specification, HDR and many pannels only 60hz. I decided as all my content was 1080p it made sense to get a 1080p TV and I'll buy another TV in 2-3 years when 4k content is common place and UHD2 spec in place.

For people using Sky/Virgin boxes etc you should be happy with the TV as it will then be basically a panel/monitor. If you plan to use it as a regular TV and use the apps, Youview etc, then I would recommend looking at other manufacturers . I bought an LG 4K TV for the bedroom recently and it's far more polished and user-friendly than the Sony.

Have you tried scrolling through the tv guide or adjusting the picture and other settings using a standard remote. LG have ruined what used to be a simple formality of scroll, scroll, select. Unless of course they have changed it back how it used to be. I have a WEBOS 01 or as it is now WEBOS 1.4, 50LB650V and it's awful. Has a nice enough screen on HD and some SD channels and although I did see some improvements on the UF770V in Currys I thought the picture was no better than my current LG yet the Sony 809C in Currys had a superior picture on SD channels for about the same money as I paid for my LG. The only thing that let the Sony down is the awful remote. At least that is something that LG and Samsung can design well, unfortunately on my LG it is wasted on the terrible user interface.

Got this from RS two days ago as a second tv for downstairs. The 6yr guarantee is what i wanted. Tried to get JL to price match but they couldn't. Updated the firmware and had a quick play around with the settings. So far I am really pleased. The picture quality, colours and responsiveness are very impressive just watching HD channels and gaming on the PS4. I haven't changed the settings yet to anything from AVForums but will do at some point. My other tv is the KD65X9005B and I haven't used it at all since getting this one, even moved the PS4 downstairs.

A bit disappointed that it doesn't come with the one-touch remote. I have one from my other tv but haven't been able to pair it with the KDL50W805C. Also, I haven't been able to pair a sony speaker with it via bluetooth, its possible the bluetooth profile of the speaker isn't supported by the tv. Other than that i'm happy.

I think that may depend on how you are watching Youview. The population of the tv guide has never been that quick, probably due to all the past as well as present and future information it needs to grab when you press the guide button. I have a Huawei DN370t which is getting a little old now but it has never failed on recording, changes channels a lot faster than my LG smart tv (50LB650V) and loads all of the on demand players quicker than the few comparative apps on the tv. In fact the LG is useless at being a smart tv. LG really need to get a grip on the smart services or just forget about them being smart altogether and just give us all a free android box. It's quite ironic to think that a £30.00 android tv box made in someone's shed in China will out-perform most of what the giants can do with smart services.

I paid £60.00 for the Youview box I can't fault it. Even better now that I have it wired direct to the router. It is no match for sky but then nothing will be but at a save of £36.00 a month for the last two years I can afford to buy a new tv every 18 months with the money that is now lining my pocket and not theirs.

Youview is a bit laggy with these older boxes. I have just bought a newer DTR-2100 made by Humax so will see how that performs but in terms of my present youview box it is considerably faster than my newer LG tv for channel change and tv guide access. My only concern with Sony and Youview is has Sony put a decent enough processor in the tv to run Youview properly and as I understand it Sony still haven't sorted out the PVR side of things. Better having a separate tv and a Youview box if you want Youview then at least you can record. They are cheap enough to buy after all off ebay unless you want a Humax but then again I only paid £85.00 for the Humax brand new.

I've never had an LG before so can't comment on older ones - the one I've got has just been released and the UI does seem to be different to screenshots of WebOS that I've seen in past reviews. Everything just works and apart from the first 20 secs after turning it on, everything is lag free. The graphics look modern and slick too.

Regarding youview, I've only tried a BT box and my two recent Sonys that I have/had. I've also tried on in Currys. The menus are far too slow and I don't think they look great either.

I'm actually going for EE TV in the next few weeks as it seems to be the best system. It has four tuners and records everything from all the main channels including HD channels, so all the scrolling and startup is lag free as everything is stored locally on the harddrive.
Smartguy1
6 Jan 16 #50
Wouldn't life be boring if we all liked the same things. I am now on my third LG having two others with one that lasted 8 years before I sold it. . There was a fault with the tuner but it was still going. I have another which is 5 years old and must really get around to selling it as there's nothing wrong with it but its been in the spare room since I bought my new LG in January last year. I don't really like the new LG and maybe being a bit petty about the user interface but I just don't like it. The old ones were just so much easier and my tv was also the first version of their webos operating system. LG shouldn't have released it and waited because its put me off their brand a little but I see that webos 02 tv's are much better when I was viewing the uf770v. I expect a channel to change quickly when I press the button and not have to wait 2 or 3 seconds so on mine I press the channel number and then select to make it change faster. It takes about 2 seconds to return to tv from tv guide. It takes about 5 seconds to change the channel normally.

I would have bought the 770 or the 850v as they were impressive when running the manufacturers usb sticks but I just thought the Sony had a better picture when viewing standard definition freeview television and it was quite a bit less money. Horses for courses I guess as we all see things differently and I loved the magic remote that came with the LG. Took my wife into view the tv and she got a bit frustrated with the remote and looked like she was going to hit me over the head with it!! Some women just have no patience. In the end we decided that the tv's didn't really have much to offer over our present tv and didn't buy. Neither of us were impressed by the Sony remote as it is badly thought out with far too many buttons and button too close together. The Samsung UE50JU6800 was at the top pf my list before viewing in Currys but was quickly dismissed. Didn't like it one bit.

The Sony didn't have Youview on it. Just the normal tv guide. I guess Currys haven't had it updated on their demo set so was unable to try it. Wouldn't have bothered me anyway as I have a youview box for recording which Sony can't do yet I believe. I didn't try any of the 4k Sonys as there is no point really in me having a 4k tv. I don't have sky for future viewings and there isn't even a decent broadband service where I live. 5mbps is the most I see which is pretty dire when 4g speed is 49mbps. Unfortunately I live in a monopolised area with just one broadband provider. No BT lines available. Consequently I don't have a clue what EE TV is !! Glad you like your LG. Which model did you buy.
Spacehduk
6 Jan 16 #51
EE TV: Link

It actually has 6 tuners! You need to be an EE mobile and broadband customer and I think it increases your bill by £2.75 per month, but as their broadband is so cheap this isn't an issue (for me anyway).

I bought the LG 40UF695V which is 4K but wasn't important to me - I chose it based on price as I got it in a deal which brought it to under £300. The magic pointer remote is a gimmick imo. I tried it out and chucked it in a drawer - the standard remote is easier to use.

After returning a KDL50W805C due to uneven backlight, I also bought the 4K Sony KD55X8005CBU for £560 which is a bargain for the screen, but ruined by the OS. I'd be sending it back if I didn't have an external source for the UI.

IMO, yes.. which is why I just bought a half decent"1080p set with a fixed budget of £500.. I could have spent more, but my plan is to go UHD in 2-3yrs time when their is more content and HDR is standardised.. too much going on at the mo.

If your happy to watch 4k trailers on youtube, or Breaking Bad, House of Cards.. over and over.. then yes, 4k is stunning... but if you just want SD & HD consent, I really dont see the point!

Don't be, it's crap. I got one for free (it's normally a whopping £50) and I never use it. It feels tacky and doesn't make navigating the plethora of different menus any easier. The voice search feature is a neat gimmick you'll never use because it doesn't search for content in most of the apps and won't work within most apps either.

For anyone considering this its only a small saving but the 755 is also available for £20 less, and is the same TV without 3d, not a lot i know but if you are never going to use the 3d feature its £20 wasted. I just got the 755 for my parents because they will never even consider using it for 3d.

Possibly another reason to go for the 755 then if you dont want 3d, it certainly looked like a good screen to me compared to the others in the price range, to be fair i didn't get to see the 805 in person i didn't realise the panel would be different, the only obvious difference spec wise was the 3d.

Hey I was wondering if you had noticed any difference between the 809C and the 805c? I think the 809C has Motionflow XR at 1000Hz (whereas the 805c has it at 800Hz). Is it worth the extra cash? Do you notice a difference in smoothness? Cheers.[/quote]

I haven't seen the 805 and 809 side by side so can't confirm one way or the other. Chances are its exactly the same panel and both will only be a true 100/120 Hz panel. The 'enhanced' motion flow rates are now done by all the manufacturers now and in reality don't mean jack sh*t because its true refresh rates that count. The manufacturers appear to have found some 'new' technology between 2014 and 2015 because my LG which is only a year old had 500 'Hz' of whatever LG were claiming back then and the same panel now has a 1000pmi. It's all bo**ocks to be honest. The panel is the same its just what parameters they use to measure the result. It's a 100Hz tv so why not just be honest and say it. The slight difference in the 800 and 1000 claimed by the manufacturer could be due to the change of a component but I doubt if any of us will see the difference.

Its a good job tv manufacturers don't make cars because they would be fiddling the bhp of the engine yet it would use the same fuel and be no better or faster.

If you view a tv in Currys or somewhere else. Make sure its tuned into a terrestrial tv channel, not the manufacturers usb stick. If you like what you see then buy it. 3D is a passing phase and most £30.00 android boxes are a lot smarter than the glitchy, crappy smart services which the tv manufacturers deem fit for purpose. 4k, no comment.

Ideally you want to turn off MotionFlow and any other 'enhancement' features anyway, they just serve to ruin the source content.

Good point although on an LG it may help to turn it on....mine is fine on fast moving but judders on slow panning like it has missing frames or they have used a processor from an old vhs recorder. Just waiting for my unlimited repairs warranty with nothing wrong, no charge to be confirmed my Currys and its going in.

Haha, that's where I feel like putting it. I think my tv had been either £799.00 or £899.00 before it dropped eventually down to £499.99. I think perhaps there is a reason why some LG models plummet so low in price whilst others do not. What's worse is that 2 months after I bought it they dropped the price on the Sony W829 to only 50 quid more than I paid for the LG. That would have been a no brainer if I waited. Mine suffers with real bad judder like its skipping (not with a rope). It doesn't do it all the time. SD programmes mainly and very occasionally on HD. Not impressed with the overall picture quality either. Could be the quality of the tv signal in my area or possibly something else is interfering with it.

I bet you wish you had never said anything lol.

ha, naa good to hear some real experiences, im currently toying with the idea of changing my tv, ive currently got a 4-5 year old lg 50 inch 1080p plasma thats been faultless, I paid about £500 and until recently there's really been no reason to even consider upgrading technology wise and i didn't want anything bigger (4k is just about starting to get interesting but im not sure we're there just yet, and im more interested in a 4k projector than a tv). Having just got a new sony for my parents i was very impressed with how tiny it was compared to mine (same screen size) due to the smaller bezel. Not sure i can justify it for that though... or i am also thinking a modern 55 inch would fit in the same space as my 50. But then i just come back to thinking maybe wait a year or so till the standards etc for 4k have settled down a little.

... Plus the plasma helps keep me warm on these cold nights.

Be careful it's a minefield out there.....Normally I take ages picking a tv but on Christmas Day 2014 I pricked my ears up at a tv Currys were advertising and thought hey that's not bad for a 50" smart 3D tv. Later that night I saw the advert again and reserved one. Picked it up the next day. My previous tv was an LG, about 4 years old (5 now) and was the same with a big bezel around it. The 50" was the same width and stands 2" shorter than my previous set. Never ever again will I buy on more or less a whim from a tv ad. There was a few reviews, all good tbh. The tv is sh*t in my opinion seeing as it's a 6 series and had been £899.00. Was someone having a laugh at this price.

http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/lg-50lb650v-smart-3d-50-led-tv-now-699-currys-1922290

The tv is definitely not an £899.00 tv. Looking at the Sony 50" 809C in Currys knocked the spots of all the other tv's in the same row which included the 4k offering of LG's 49UF770V and Samsung UE50JU6800 both costing quite a bit more. No doubt my tv was another one of Currys special purchases from LG, bespoke to them using cheap or cheaper parts, built to a price perhaps because it really is not a good tv at all. What makes it worse is that it should have had LG's 'unique' IPS panel, as advertised on the LG website. They lied. It does not have IPS, it is a VA panel by AU Optronics. I think I would have been better off with A Panasonic fake made by Vestel.

Good luck in hunting for a new tv. I done quite a bit of research recently as I was looking at the replacing the awful LG. Sony is at the top of my list at the minute but who knows. There is always something else round the corner and Currys have a tendency to suddenly drop £200.00 off a tv so may end up with something that is currently out of my price range.
