I wouldn't be soldering over an exposed dining room table like that...

Yup, there are a number of things wrong with this. The most notable being:
A clean ironed white t-shirt.
Absolutely cooking everything (look at the shiny new station and the marks up the iron).
He seems to be balling rather than heating the components and letting capillary action do its job.
Dropping solder balls on the nice polished work surface.
He isn't wearing specs due to eyestrain.
He is wearing goggles, just in case he hits zero gravity.
If he needs goggles he needs gloves, for when you get to a fiddly bit and forget totally it is not a pencil type object you are holding, but in fact a skin searing heat source.
No curtains on the windows.
Someone put a 'While Stocks Last!' poster on his wall.
Did I take that too far?
Anyways, as long as the base and the element are good you can use decent tips and worst case scenario you replace the entire iron with an on sale good one.

Although I've worked 30 years in the electronics industry and should have known better, I bought one of these. On first use the tip disintegrated

And when his partner walks in - as the solder is sliding over the un tinned wire and trickling on to the highly polished table - it will be "Apocalypse Now"!

Look at the fumes he's breathing in. Hope he's got the windows opened. At least he's sensible to wear eye goggles. You can't be too careful these days with H&S.
