I had boiler problems on Christmas day and the radiators were my only source of heating, so looked for a backup for the living room.
I've bought this product as I like the look of it and is a fashionable brand.

Now received 2 fires on date as promised by Smeg within one calender month of order. Fixed the first and very impressed particularly at the price paid. Understand that mistaken price from B&Q was for the surround only excl the fire, Supplied at a loss by B& Q.

How does this give out heat? is it by Fan?
Shaunyac to subzero1234
11 Jan 16#131
Yes I believe it's a fan heater located in the bottom which blows hot air downwards.
I'm trying to get to the bottom of this since I heard nothing off B&Q until I rang them today, even though they've taken payment.
I rang Smeg this morning, and they have said that they are waiting for the stock to come in, they've got to put their own fascias on the fire (proving some people's claims that these are just rebadged fires?) and are looking to get the deliveries out by end of January start of Feb the latest.
I was thinking about cancelling the order but it's a good looking fire and for the price (£110), there's nothing that looks as good as this, even if it is just a rebadged generic fire.
EDIT: BTW, the advisor at Smeg said the orders are definitely going ahead and my name is in a hat? and said that as soon as it's pulled, they will contact me to arrange a delivery date.

However, John Lewis has just called me to arrange delivery for the one I ordered via them. The lady at B&Q informed me that there is a possibility of the order not being fulfilled even though payment has been taken and that we will get a confirmation either way end of next week. Just wanted to update you.

This'll probably be B&Q's way of saying 'We have every intention of cancelling your order because we don't mind disappointing our customers. In the meantime,we'll make it look like we are trying to source stock and don't mind keeping everyone's money as we string them along'
I've ordered three items from them in the last year. Two items were cheap. The third,a misprice. All were cancelled. After about ten days of waiting for an item to turn up,i emailed them asking for a delivery date to be told,oh yeah,we didn't have stock,it's been cancelled.I asked why i had not been refunded automatically and they replied that they don't refund until they had spoken to me (they hadn't tried by email or phone).
If i'd had a case of amnesia, they'd probably still have it

It has a cable with a plug on the end of it so obviously how much it shows depends on where your wall socket is located. I've read that someone with the Focal Point version of this fire had an electrician install a socket faceplate behind the glass facia which was able to hide it.
hukdbargain
2 Jan 16#84
Yes I came across a review where someone had to have a replacement and was sent just a focal point fire ready to put the old smeg cover on the new fire. Figured its still a decent enough price though at £110.

Same instructions, same gubbins, Smeg just has a different face plate.

Funnily enough you're thinking down exactly the same lines as I am. Would like one of these but think the manufacturer's name being emblazoned on the fascia is a bit much. Would like to remove this entirely failing that cover the brand name up somehow - but at a guess this isn't possible (don't know whether the fascia gets hot for example).
Voted hot but good luck with dealing with B&Q. Their click and collect system is flawed, severely flawed. They take your money despite any stock being available nor being reserved and expect you to wait very nearly a week to get a refund upon being told they do not have the items available ex-stock.

Oh, if you want to start talking sense now, that is fine by me.
You compared two types of fire. I compared two modes of transport. Due to residential practicalities and budget, for some, the log fire is no less nonsensical than a helicopter.

Does anyone have a photo of their new fire up please? (Im not sure I like it now??)
Would John Lewis do a price match if I placed an order? I.e show them order invoice?
Posted on Screwfix from FocalPoint supplier for the Charmouth similar to the Smeg....fingers crossed Smeg will supply.
If i'd had a case of amnesia, they'd probably still have it
' I have contacted B&Q and have been informed that they do not currently have stock of the Smeg Retro Black Remote Control Electric Fire , therefore on this occasion I cannot match the price quoted.'
I only ordered the fire in the first place thinking that it was Smeg quality, but after seeing it's just a rebadged generic product,i won't bother a pricematch again. If it comes for £110,then fair enough, but if it doesn't ( and it probably won't knowing B&Q ) then i'll leave it.
Asked another company who also price match and they have refused and commented that they would be a little suspicious as they have no idea how they can price it at £125 as they will be making a loss! Think I'll be ordering from John Lewis and pay the extra £15 just to be on the safe side!
A maximum of 10 items can be ordered on this price match.
lol. 1 is enough...
After a bit of digging around I found out it's made by Focal Point Fires, known under various model names such as Charmouth (£184 Screwfix), Osmington (£197 Screwfix), Yeovilton (£252 B&Q), Shaftesbury (Amazon £212).
Same instructions, same gubbins, Smeg just has a different face plate.
Rebadged by Smeg.
Heat output poor and Smeg writing is wonky on the front on most of them as I found out after returning it for another one, only to find it was the same.
Easy to hang, only three screws.
Looks ok other than that.
Would I buy again, No!

Sir, your a smeeeggg-heeaddddd
They should do, I submitted a price match for it and they have just emailed me to confirm they will be happy to price match
Voted hot but good luck with dealing with B&Q. Their click and collect system is flawed, severely flawed. They take your money despite any stock being available nor being reserved and expect you to wait very nearly a week to get a refund upon being told they do not have the items available ex-stock.
You compared two types of fire. I compared two modes of transport. Due to residential practicalities and budget, for some, the log fire is no less nonsensical than a helicopter.
Hope that helps.
Tempted to buy this electric one for the other room.
"we got it for a great price, a mistake we think"
Fingers crossed!
The appliance is supplied with a pre-wired three pin plug (13 Amp fuse rated) and 1.8 metres of electrical cable. It is therefore necessary for a suitable electrical socket to be located within this distance and be easily accessible.
They will happily take orders on thousands of these even if there is not a single one in stock.

Let's hope they honor this
