581d, 'Google' diesel cetane rating. The BS standard is currently a minimum of 51, this changes around the world , eg diesel in North America is 53 and other countries as low as 40. Shell Nitro measures/tests above 55 and BP Ultimate nearer 60. This is the reason premium diesel fuel produces more HP with better mpg and a lower noise rating due to the reduction in diesel 'shock' or ignition not quite at the optimal time.
However, great post on sainsburys diesel at 99.9p, couldn't resist in my 335d, 47litres..... £47 , bargain! Voted HOT

I think You are wrong in this... shell fuel has more octans so your car use smaller amount of fuel to deliver same performance as low octans fuel... thats the FACT ... and you can see difference in driving
The higher octane counts of premium fuels such as Shell/BP do make a difference to performance depending on your vehicle. For example, VW's FSI engines are actually designed to run on these fuels.

PGJ80, you are in fact incorrect. In most modern vehicles you would be able to tell the difference, engines run quieter/smoother and also get better mpg with Shell/BP etc than Supermarket fuels, which is down to the superior quality cleaners/additives added at Shell/BP.
Most people won't notice the difference because when they have used the better fuel, they've mixed it with half a tank of supermarket fuel.
Supermarket fuel is more likely to clog up EGR's and DPF's, but the fuel is not the only factor involved when you talk about clogged up EGR's and DPF's.

You either believe in marketing too much or you tried a real world test but traffic conditions or route were slightly different. It is the same stuff from the same refineries.

At these prices we are still being ripped off.
I was in Germany for Christmas and was paying the equivalent of 75p a litre for Diesel!!

Fingers crossed - PetrolPrices.com still yet to catch up if they have changed it.
Shame I have 3/4 tank still so hoping they keep this until the end of the week.

Thanks for your scientific input. Unless you are driving a performance vehicle on track/race day conditions you will not see any difference when using supermarket fuel

Good to see. In parts of Sheffield (i.e. those without an Asda filling station nearby) JS and Tesco have been charging 99.9ppl for Unleaded and a ridiculous 6ppl more for Diesel (105.9ppl) since before Christmas. Ridiculous when wholesale Diesel prices are still under Unleaded.

How do you think they've been funding the sub £1 petrol.

yes. our local bp franchise in Crookes which is usually the most expensive in Sheffield has been 103.9 for diesel all December and the cheapest in most of Sheffield. The guy said they just add the same margin on all year round so the local supermarkets have been ripping everyone off all December.
