The raspberry pi zero is a nightmare to get hold of and they are selling for silly money on auction sites. The Pi zero was given away free with MagPi magazine, this magazine (issue 40) sells for >£20 on auction sites by itself. You can get a Pi Zero, a cable adapter set and three issues of MagPi magazine for £12.99. I called them earlier and they confirmed you would get issue 40 (with free Pi), issue 42 and issue 43. The magazine in shops sells for £5.99 an issue.

I don't disagree there are well made Chinese products, but there is rubbish out there as well. China is somewhere where manufacturing can be done cheaply which has contributed to Britain changing from a country which made goods thing to one which engineers good things which are made overseas for a lower price. It's nice to see companies from Britain supporting British industry even though it will probably lead to lower margins. This is a fully functioning computer engineered and made in the UK which I think is absolutely amazing, That is all.
If it works for sentient life forms then it's still probably worth a go with a Pi.

This is good because you also get 3 copies of MagPi too, which a £5.99 each at newsstands.
However, a bit of patience will get you a Zero for £6.50 (£4.00 + £2.50 postage) as production is being increased now to meet demand.
If you need the cables, then another £4.00.
This deal starts to look very good!

That is RRP but as there is no stock anywhere you won't get one for that price for a while. When stock is released I imagine it will just fulfill pre-orders. Here you can have the Pi Zero, three magazines and the adapter set. If the Pi Zero was selling at RRP this still would be valued at about £28!

The PiHut and PiMoroni are the two resellers who have stocked the zero.
But as I said, a little patience is needed because production is being increased and stock will arrive soon. Neither of those two resellers are taking pre orders. They will notify if you register an email.
£4.00 is RRP, £2.50 is delivery.

Depends what you want to do with it. It has its place in projects, being very small, light and needing very little power and almost a throwaway price.
But for most purposes, especially beginners a Pi2B is a better choice.

The boards are British made. Companies capable of making these are few and far between and those that can, have commitment other than the Pi, and no they cannot devote more production time to the Pi as it is a finite product and the market will soon top out.
wildcolor

That's exactly why they need to do mass produce when people are still loving it now and the Pi Zero is the top in the market.!!

From playing around with my Pi Zero, I found its possible to play SD video in MP4 format fullscreen providing you use the omxplayer app that utilises the built-in GPU core. VLC will play mp3 but wont play mp4s as in VLC everything is done in software (not GPU).
As a basic media playback device the Pi Zero would probably be fine. Haven't tried streaming yet.
The limited RAM can be a pain if you are doing internet stuff, so if you plan to use it as a general purpose machine I would go with the Raspberry Pi B2 as the increased RAM and Quad cores handle the web better. Sadly the lack of flash support prevents a lot of the media-rich sites like iplayer this affects all variants because there us no ARM support for Flash.
rorrism to R37R0
19 Jan 161#20
If you use raspbmc or other kodi/openelec OSes on the Pi you will notice MUCH better playback. I have had raspbmc running and streaming fine on a Pi 1 which has lower specs than the zero so it should be fine.

I believe video on Kodi is smooth enough - have a look at the YouTube videos showing the Pi Zero playing back HD videos stutter-free:
The Pi's were meant for education and possibly a very niche market. They were never intended to be popular. I think it is amazing they have produced something so good, well made, value for money, and not chinese made!

Can anyone tell me what is the latest most powerful PI, im yet to buy one of these gadgets..:smirk:
rorrism to ukez
19 Jan 161#22
The Pi 2 is the newest/fastest. The newer models are not only faster but also more power efficient
reddragon105 to ukez
20 Jan 16#40
That's two questions - the Zero is the latest, the Pi 2 Model 2 is the most powerful. Which you buy will depend on what you want to do with it, but if it's your first Pi go for the 2 - it'll run everything smoothly and I doubt there's anything you would absolutely need the small form factor of the Zero for (I'd like one to put in my coffee machine so that I can activate it over the internet and make sure I have fresh coffee waiting for me when I get home - the smaller the better for that purpose, and I wouldn't need the power of the Pi 2 to do that, but I have no idea where to start with wiring it up!)
What do you want to do? Multimedia is a common use - you're obviously aware of things like Kodi - and I've currently got my Pi 2 setup with a wireless Xbox 360 controller on my living room TV using recalbox, which is a suite of emulators, so that I can play SNES, Mega Drive games, etc. I've modified the original setup to add Kodi and Moonlight, which connects to my desktop PC, starts Steam in Big Picture Mode and streams it to my TV (so it basically does the job of a Steam Link), so that's a pretty good gaming setup!
But I've also got other plans - like the coffee machine one I mentioned above (I've seen examples of it done before), and I'd like to use it with my DSLR camera and slider to do motorised timelapses (like this - http://blog.davidsingleton.org/raspberry-pi-timelapse-controller/) and I'd also like to add a Pi NoIR (infrared) camera and make it motion triggered to get some night time photos/video of the wildlife in my garden. And I also need some kind of new audio player for my kitchen and I was thinking of using a Pi for that too - just hook it up to some speakers and use it to stream music from my media server.
Basically, if you can think of something you'd like/need to do that would require a small computer to power it, you can build it.

If you still use the old thinkings, ie Chinese products = Cheap low quality stuff, I would then strongly disagree with you. Probably people always link Chinese products to cheap products. But if you stpend more money, you can buy very good quality stuff, such as Lenovo, Huawei, etc.
