so Xbox gets KI and we get this crap. I was really hoping for a AAA this Jan I guess Sony no longer cares as they have their base now. Before anyone argues I know GF is a good game but I bought it about 12 years ago and have no desire to play it again

Knack won't be coming to Plus any time soon. It was the 10th best selling game in the UK in the run up to Christmas. They're still making money from it.

This is excellent but just like the official blog you have whiners going "where's our triple A games" I much prefer this than Knack which is meant to be mediocre and most likely range around £5 next year.

Grim Fandango is worthy so pleased about that, didn't try the hardware rivals demo so no idea about that one.

Hopefully this year we'll get some bigger games though - Tomb Raider, Black Flag, Second Son to name but three!

Excellent update, Hardware will benefit from the instant userbase like Rocket League did and is a fun trip back to the origins of online PS gaming. Grim Fandango has always been acclaimed and I expect a lot of people to enjoy that.
One of the best months for a while.

30 Dec 15 1 #14
Grim Fandango is great (got the platinum), but it's not for everyone. It's a bizarre game and the puzzle solutions/story progression requirements are often FAR from obvious. That said it's a hilarious game with a lot of meat on the bones and if you were a fan of the original you'd probably appreciate a re-play with updated graphics and controls.
robertrychel
30 Dec 15 #15
I tried the Hardware beta and wasn't massively impressed, horrible controls and camera. It was a beta though so hopefully improved. Grim Fandango is great, but I picked it up when it launched with a plus discount, as I suspect a lot of people did. Interested to see what the PS3 and Vita offerings are, as they're keeping them quiet.

30 Dec 15 2 #42
Definitely no point in owning both in my opinion. And I don't think these consoles were as impressive as they should have been (which is why I built a gaming pc instead until this year)

I'm enjoying my ps4, although I mainly bought it for sports games I'm playing through the uncharted collection, and until dawn which are both great. Looking forward in particular to exclusives final fantasy 7, last guardian, and detroit. I know it's personal opinion but it was so so easy for me to pick ps4 over xbone, xbox exclusives have never interested me and half of them get released on PC anyway so I can play in 4k resolution if I want to ( which I'd always choose over console given the chance).

Also Ps+ is just a bonus rather than a reason for me to use the console, as long for as there is 3 or more games you enjoy per year it will pay for itself.
Dichotomy to Adam PDM
30 Dec 15 3 #52
I see this comment quite often from xbox users, but struggle to see where they are coming from as the xbox line up is no better than the ps line up and the console as a whole has less games released on it. Add to that that third party titles tend to run better on the PS4 and I can't see a reason for picking xbox over ps unless you are really in to Forza.

30 Dec 15 1 #28
Have they replaced the 360 offerings with Xbox One titles now? Missed that announcement. That's a bit naff for the 360 owners. :disappointed:

Nah, just all games for the 360 GWG games are now backwards compatible with the Xbox One. SO you still get 2 xbox 360 games and 2 xbox one games. But all 4 are playable on the Xbox One

As PS+ is needed for PS4 multiplayer there is no business incentive to give away £50 games every month. The same can't be said for PS3/Vita though, but there was a period of great games like Arkham Asylum, Assassins Creed 3, Tomb Raider. Hopefully there will be more titles like these on the way.

Can't wait for Hardware: Rivals.:sunglasses:
Loved Hardware: Online Arena on PS2 but it never got the attention it deserved, much like the PS2's online service in general. Was starting to think there would never be an update until they announced this recently.
Hopefully a PS+ release at launch will have a similar effect to Rocket League.
Hardware: Rivals is a system seller for me (unusual candidate I know) as I've not got a PS4 yet.

Was hoping Grim Fandango would show up too. Intrigued what the PS3 and Vita titles will be.

Grim Fandango is an amazing game. Hardware rivals was Hardware Online Arena on the PS2 and I played the beta and was impressed. few bugs needing ironed out but looking good. I wish they had re mastered the original hardware soundtrack as it was catchy then and still is now.

What used to be that good on PS4 for PS+ then, that they don't have anymore? You are normally paying about £3 a month for other benefits and as a bonus you get 2 free games (on PS4 alone), don't understand why everyone has such a downer on this? If you buy a magazine now you normally pay £5+ each.... this is a really good deal still!

30 Dec 15 #62
I agree. The exclusive lines ups have been pretty poor but xbox1 is certainly no better than ps4. It's not my type of game but Bloodborne is easily the best critically acclaimed exclusive.

Third party games run slightly better on ps4 thanon xbox1 so i don't know how he can be disappointed with ps4 and not xbox1.
Rossmor40
30 Dec 15 #64
Bloodbourne appealed to a very small minority of people and quickly disappeared into the bargain bins.

As for the PS4 running 3rd party titles better that may been the case 2 years ago when both consoles first came out but it's not really the case now. Major 3rd party games like Fallout 4 and the Witcher 3 ran or did run better on the Xb1 at launch. Even now there's still major frame rate problems with Fallout 4 on the PS4.

It's as someone said earlier, Sony establish a lead then slack off and allow the opposition to catch up and that's exactly what's happened in the last year.

Glad I held off on Grim Fandango when it was at £6. Hardware Rivals looks good too. PS+ has been dire over the past couple of months (typically just after I'd got a membership).

My pairing is an XBOX 360 and PS4, even managed to upgrade the hard drive on the PS4 to 2TB for £60.

30 Dec 15 1 #67
Very very poor. The PS3 days of PSN Plus were fantastic - full retail games that were around 2 years old and some good games that I'd never considered playing before and really enjoyed. It's all gone downhill with the PS4 - can't think of a single full game that's been provided as part of PSN Plus for the PS4, and there's a decent catalogue now.

That's not to say I don't enjoy the Indie games, such as Don't Starve, but Sony don't seem to be offering anywhere near the value they used to.

As I don't really play online I've not continued my subscription after it lapsed in July. I keep waiting for a decent month of games, but they never come.... could be a while.

Bloodborne's the game of this generation. I have an xbox one and a ps4 and fallout4 does not run better on the xbox one.

30 Dec 15 2 #69
Virtually everything you've said is utter tripe. Bloodborne sold millions and it's not in the bargain bins at all. Eurogamer's Digital Foundry STILL has PS4 outperforming Xbox One almost every single time. The patch for FO4 helped PS4 but Xbox One still has issues. PS4 is still outselling Xbox One by 2:1 - Microsoft still don't even release hardware sales and instead use (snigger) Xbox Live accounts. They haven't caught up and most likely never will.

Smells like fanboy.

I remember getting at least 1 big name title on PS3 and a couple of indie games before the PS4 came out, there used to be free avatars plus free exclusive themes. Don't get any of that, all small games and not seen any avatars or themes on the PS4 PS+

But I still love it for the extra discounts on games when there is a sale

30 Dec 15 2 #75
I agree that Bloodborne appeals to a minority but that is mainly because the majority aren't willing to give it a go, they really should.

And as for disappearing into the bargain bins, well apart from GTA Bloodborne has been the one game this year that has really held its value even the GotY version is going for £40...not too shabby for a 9 month old game with the single piece of released DLC.

30 Dec 15 1 #76
Wish someone could tell me where I could get Bloodborne from the 'bargain bins' as I have been waiting for it to come down for ages and it is holding its price (save for a fabled HMV deal which no one else could find). No doubt the poster above who made this statement can help me out and tell me where to go because I have been keeping a very close eye on Bloodborne prices everywhere- including foreign PS stores and very few games have held their value like this one.

i own both consoles, i got the ps4 as i love my jrpg/rpg games and since the ps3 was the home to such games last gen it made sense. But now having owned both consoles since release i have to say the xbox one is used a whole lot more than my ps4, the pad and on-line services on the xbox are better, the community seems far better too.

i have just bought r6 siege and star wars on xbox one despite owning both (digitally) on ps4, both games are more fun on-line on the one. Also nothing beats that feeling you get when you unlock an achievement

i have no plans to get rid of my ps4 despite it been a disappointment (for me at least) this year bar rocket league and FFVII as it looks to have solid 2016 coming up.

Dichotomy
30 Dec 15 2 #86
That is just full of nonsense, the only part of it I think is true is that, at release, witcher 3 ran worse on PS4, but even that is patched to run better now. As for Fallout 4, it showed us just how low some of the gaming community could go - I remember the pre-release reports of frame rate drops on the PS4 and the xbox players making videos and mocking PS4 players, thing was that once it released the xbox performed even worse. I'd rather both versions ran fine, but even I've got to admit that made me laugh a bit. Here is digital foundry's verdict at release
http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-2015-fallout-4-performance-analysis
and after the patch things seemed to only get better for PS4 users
http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-2015-fallout-4-patch-102-the-good-the-bad-and-the-ugly
if you have any other reliable sources that could refute that feel free to post them.

As for Bloodborne, I wouldn't call the Soul's series niche any more, it has a decent sized following and general reports indicate it selling somewhere in the 1-2 million units mark, but we can't be sure as sales figures were never officially released. It has also kept its value far better than most titles and it is hard to find the base game for less than £25, if we compare that to Halo 5 or RotTR you could get them at £25 each within a month of release (albeit as a 2 for £50 deal).

To be clear I don't think either console has the games yet that make it stand out from the other console, although I do feel the PS4 is in a stronger position in general with the slightly better hardware (which should widen the gap further now they have also unlocked the 7th core for devs) and a potentially more interesting line up of games for my tastes over the next couple of years (I feel xbox still caters more for the action/shooting gaming crowd, whereas Sony promises a more mixed set of genres in their exclusives).

If anyone remembers, when PS+ first came out on PS3, they were giving us these same crappy games, it was only in maybe the PS3's last 2-3 years of life that they started giving us proper AAA titles, that's why I think we're going to have to wait at least another year before PS4's PS Plus quality matches PS3's quality.
darkspace100 to f2k8
30 Dec 15 #108
There flaws in your logic. Even then PS3 got AAA games like Tomb Raider, Sleeping dogs, Bioshock infinite literally 9 months since they released and one important thing to remember is multiplayer wasn't locked into a paywall on PS3. Now they know everyone will buy PS Plus just to play online with their friends they know they have us by the balls lol. I don't think we will get many AAA games this except a few remasters to increase hype for sequels.
jamie19916 to f2k8

Though even the PS3 titles have dropped in quality since the PS4 release.

They also used to give games out every 4 weeks, which would actually add up to 13 refreshes a year, now as it's always every calander month it's only 12.

List of PS+ games here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Instant_Game_Collection_games_(PAL_region)#PlayStation_4 plenty of quality titles. Anybody would think MS give away AAA titles every month on the X1 going by these comments, seriously!
hobsgrg
30 Dec 15 #115
I don't understand how PS+ being introduced 4-5 years after PS3 release is relevant. In the last year or two before the PS4 was launched Sony were giving away AAA game that was 9 to 18 months old each month and games were generally all under 2 years old. The time before then isn't relevant because they were only giving away games released in the last two years. When PS+ was introduced at launch on PS4 it was too new to expect AAA games, but it has been over two years now so the excuse that it hasn't been out for long enough isn't valid. They now have the same range of games available as they did in the "good days" of PS+ to offer on PS4 but they don't.

Even on PS3 the perceived value has nose dived as the titles being given away now are older than the ones being given away in the golden days before PS4 launch!

It seems clear to me we are never going to get a return to those golden days, as PS+ is mandatory on PS4 for online Sony no longer see the need to make the "free" game selection include big name titles with broad appeal and instead concentrate on smaller titles which might score good reviews but have more limited appeal
hobsgrg
30 Dec 15 #116
Plenty of good titles, problem is Sony are giving away lots of good titles with limited appeal, whereas Microsoft have included more games with mass market appeal. The mass market games might be "worse", but a lot of people enjoy playing them to a greater or lesser extent while the Sony offerings are more marmite, loved by critics and some players but a lot of people just don't like them at all as they aren't their cup of tea.

I get that but on a personal note I have played Resogun far more than any of my X1 offerings for example so maybe people should play before judging. People just go on about AAA this AAA that when a lot of AAA arent all that. Its all subjective anyway

For those commenting on the totally incorrect info that it is found in bargain bins (it isn't, it held it's value and has been very difficult to find cheaply) and who want to pick Bloodborne up, it's dropped to about 16 quid on PSN Canada. Setting up my account today..

You only get 6 if you have all systems. The 360 ones are BC with X1 so you get 4 games to play if you have their newest system. And XBL costs less.

Gotta agree with everyone complaining about these games. This is simply taking the ****. Grim Fandango was awesome in 1998, don't get me wrong, but come on. It's time to mix some retail with the indies now. Stop penny pinching, splash the cash and get some bigger games on board now, at least MS have started to get their act together. Never thought I'd say that.

Here’s the full list of great titles that await you on 5th January:

Hardware: Rivals (PS4)
Grim Fandango Remastered (PS4)
Dragon Age: Origins (PS3)
Medal of Honor: Warfighter (PS3)
Nihilumbra (PS Vita)
Legends of War: Patton (PS Vita)

my decision to not renew two weeks ago is because of rubbish games like this, overall balance of games has been poor and recently embarrassed by Microsoft who actually let you keep your games

ps plus used to be awesome, now you really are just paying to play online

I'm of the same opinion here. Tbh I didn't see the point in backward compatibility but now it is looking like a pretty good feature. True, I get 6 games a month, but I can't play 4 of em. Not that I'm saying Sony should cater for me alone, but the fact that xbone owners can play 4 games is pretty good.
Dichotomy
30 Dec 15 2 #143
There is so much misinformation in this thread it is amazing, I'm only guessing here, but are a lot of the posters solely Xbox gamers, even the ones who always state they have both systems? It is a lot like some of the bigger name gaming sites out there - I'm guessing the games with gold posts suffer a similar fate from 'the other side'. From my point of view games with gold is no better than PS+ for its offerings and neither comes close to the mid-late PS3 era of games that were offered. Of course I remember the posts for them having loads of people complaining they owned all the AAA games and asking for more obscure games - no matter what is released will annoy someone.

Personally I have always bought the games I wanted, so if something turns up on plus I enjoy it is a bonus - you can't just gamble that every month will have something you want and a good spell on either service will not make it a reason to buy that console unless you want to be disappointed. Both services are a few quid a month so if one game gets you attention it is probably a worthwhile month, and if none do then take it as if it was Gold from last generation - a service you are forced to pay for to play online.

Needed plus for online, but really I don't look at the freebies anymore as they usually aren't worth more than a quick play through, give it time though the PS4 is still a young console really.
Tryster
30 Dec 15 #148
One thing you have to say for Sony: with the extremely poor quality of the PS+ games, coupled with a mandatory c£35 per year charge to play already hideously overpriced games on a very mediocre network infrastructure, with poor voice chat - they're making a decent case to go back to PC gaming
chublet
30 Dec 15 #149
Let month we got Walking Dead season 2 and Gauntlet, both games I love so am very happy - will get Grim Fandango as have fancied that for a while but it is a shame the PS3 games are not playable on the PS4. I paid £33 for my PSPlus so i guess it is pretty good value over the course of a year although i don't really play online - this is my first year with a playstation as have always had xbox before now but thought i would switch in time for their VR helmet which i am really looking forward to.

Funnily enough though, i didn't get a notification email so thanks to the OP for this thread

Sucks to be PS4-only players. Should have jumped ship sooner

The self-entitlement knows no bounds. I'd be happy with just Grim Fandango and a couple more vita indies.

Too many mainstream tools expecting too much from the service. You realise after the success of a few indies recently on plus, that the trend will only continue? Better cancel your PS+ and sell up before it's too late, your Xbox 720p is waiting.

30 Dec 15 #153
Grim Fandango alone makes this a great selection for January. I'd hoped that we might see it in PS+ given the recent inclusion of Broken Age, but hadn't expected it to be coming quite so soon!

Well, the number of games available for PS4 varies month-by-month, as it's quite typical to see a number of cross-buy games included - January's games are quite unusual in there not being any. As for the price, third parties discount the subscriptions more, yes, but the base cost is identical.

You're exactly wrong on every count. It's like you're from opposite land!

It's generally accepted that 3rd party titles tend to run better on PS4.

Bloodborne in bargain bins, are you serious? It's one of the highest rated games ever let alone this year and has held its value remarkably well. From Software fans were initially a small (but ardent) minority in the Demons Souls days but the Souls fanbase is now massive. Bloodborne has sold over 2 million units, which is pretty impressive for a single-platform game.

Reeks of fanboy; visions of troll.

Your last comment also seems to be a general Sony vs MS comment. But you seem to forget that last generation the 360 held a commanding lead for a few years initially but Sony caught up pretty well with the newer models of the PS3. If anyone became complacent it was M$ with their absurd plans for the Xbone and subsequent U-turns (always on DRM, no preowned games, compulsory Kinect, sports sports sports).
stupot76

Although it's not my taste to be fair to them Hardware Rivals is a new release

31 Dec 15 #166
As an owner of both consoles your comments are totally incorrect! I have Black Ops 3 and Star Wars Battlefront on both, Black Ops 3 suffers terrible frame rate issues on the xbone, especially in the control room level, to the point of being unplayable, and as for Star Wars, well the difference in visual quality is very easy to see. Not wanting to sound like a fan boy, because I'm not, but the PS4 is definitely superior to the xbone!
