You are talking absolute nonsense.
I started supporting Man Utd in 1983, and I live nowhere near Manchester. At the time, Liverpool were by far the most successful side and everyone seemed to support them. I chose United because a) I didn't have a "local" league team (the nearest pro club was over 40 miles from my home) and b) the first game I ever watched was the 1983 cup final between Utd and Brighton, and I just liked the way Utd played. I know many other fans who have similar reasons. This mentality of true fans being local is just pathetic. Success had nothing to do with it in my case - for most of the 80s we were terrible!
As for your bull about fairweather fans "buying all the merchandising" and making Utd rich - that's just about the stupidest thing I've read on here! Utd were always one of the wealthiest clubs around - even way before our success in the 90s, and we regularly broke the transfer records. Mainly because we had such a huge fan base and filled our stadium week in week out - a fan base built gained by the club's history and culture (helped in no small part sadly, by the Munich disaster - and our ability to rebuild, etc..).
I assume your football knowledge doesn't extend any earlier than the early 90s

I'm sorry but I don't know anything about a link with the Munich air disaster. To me, manure is just a play on Man U and makes them sound like horse poop. I believe most other fans think of this in the same way. Like Spurs are Spuds and Forest are Florist, that kind of thing.
Actually, I have nothing against Man United fans who grew up near the ground (or maybe their Dad did) and thus they are supporting their local club. What I hate is all the other so called fans, the glory hunters, who picked Man U simply because, at that time, they were the best. Then they bought all the merchandising, which in turn made the club very rich, which in turn meant that they could buy everyone else's best players, which in turn made them even better, which in turn attracted even more fans, and so on. At one stage it seemed like nothing would stop this self-perpetuating cycle of improvement that was making the league boringly predictable. I'd much prefer a more level playing field so that as many different teams as possible could win the league and have their moment at the top.

Yes, the association of the term "manure" has been way overcooked. It appears to have been used originally because they wouldn't have readily used the term "****" in chants back then. So, whilst the original chant may have also included direct reference to the Munich Air disaster, which is offensive and certainly beyond "banter", calling Man Utd "manure" now, as you say, for the vast majority, is no better or worse than calling them "****" or "****". It just so happens to fit better with the team name's contraction.
Those taking offence, especially on this forum, are looking out for it.

its an old school insult " manure" and "man u" as in duncan edwards is now manure rotting in his grave and man as in like hey man hows it going.

Only Liverpool fans would count the mickey mouse...sorry league cup as a 'major' trophy. What with all the better premier league teams fielding their reserve sides until the semis and if you win it you get enough prize money to pay for Sturridge to sit on the treatment table for another 6 days. Woo. Major. You get more prize money from having your match televised live in the 3rd round of the FA Cup.
