Nest learning thermostat 3rd generation, £199 at B&Q but they have a voucher code for £15 off anything over £100, making it £184, cheaper than everywhere else. Free click and collect to store. Voucher code valid until 21st of January. Code: EMAIL3539

3% for all sales at Quidco, could be £178(.48) bit of a hit or miss with non-voucher usage but worth the shot mine tracked. (3.03% TCB)

Prefer hive as it's battery operated and can be situated where you like, Nest needs to be hardwired...
bradford_dr to mxer450
8 Jan 16 #13
Why would you want to move your thermostat around? One of the main functions of the Nest is that it learns the thermal properties of your house, how long it takes to warm/cool, if you keep moving it about, it's not going to do that unless the temperature is remarkably consistent across the property.

There's no need to have it handy to change the temperature as virtually any phone / computer / tablet with an internet browser, or iOS / Android / Windows phone app can achieve this....

you can just buy the stand and plug it in wherever you want

The heat-link needs to be hard-wiredbut the thermostat can go anywhere you want. It can communicate with the heat-link via wire or wirelessly.

I work shifts (all over the shop).

I'm assuming this wouldn't be any use for me??? I cant even "learn" what I'll be doing from day to day.

If I just wanted something that could be switched on / off remotely what would be my best bet?

Exactly the same as me. Unless I look at my 24/7 rota I don't know if i'm coming or going. I decided about a month ago I will get Nest for my newly bought (and under refurb) home as for someone like me it makes a lot of sense. I'm just not quite ready to buy just yet.

I have had mine for nearly a year now (older model) . It is a good piece if kit.. Saved me a fortune in gas, switch it off for holidays or when out for a day and the switch it back on when coming home. You can use these without being permanently wired but you have to plug them back in again to charge them :disappointed:.. I wired mine in myself and saved myself the cost of getting it fitted... Would recommend to anyone, there are also other products coming out from other suppliers that will be nest compliant

What are the advantages of this over Hive?
redmamoth to gus77
8 Jan 16 1 #20
I could be wrong, but I think with Hive you need to plug something into your router which also needs powering from a plug socket. With Nest, it just connects directly to your router. Also, Nest is prettier. And rounder.

Hive can control your hot water on non-combi boiler. They are bringing out more options for hive like smart plugs, smart bulbs and door/ window contacts you control from your phone.

Hive has a small receiver that plugs into your router with an Ethernet cable so you will need a spare port and power socket.

8 Jan 16 #23
Looked at nest and hive but I think I will be going for Honeywell Evohome. Basic kit is £200 but the good thing about this is you can then get individual radiator thermostats (£55ea), it does work out more expensive this way but then your heating becomes multizone and you can set each rooms temperature to your desired setting, control each from the included controller or from phone etc.

I agree with evohome over nest/hive, but I can't decide between evohome or heat genius
ss87
8 Jan 16 #25
Based on pure aesthetics I think the nest is best. It has its downfalls. To run itself it requires mains power. The hive doesn't. It is however very smart but will do odd things. It decided to heat up my flat for five hours whilst I was driving away for the weekend as if expecting I may change my mind and come back home. Not tried the 3rd gen yet.

Have not looked into Heat Genius. Wll have a look at that and see what that offers.
skylinedude
8 Jan 16 #29
Looks like Heat Genius will work out to be double the cost of Evohome. Also seems you need sensors in each of the rooms (£35ea) + the Valves (£60)..Whereas the Evohome I believe has them built into the Radiator valve. You also need to have it professionally installed, evohome you can do it yourself if you wish. This is just my opinion.

I think you can puchase it with installation included or if you have your own Gas safe Engineer, he/she should be able to do it for you too.

Can someone fill a n00b in on the advantages of one of these over a more traditional thermostat. Mine is stuck to the wall, I have it set to come on at different temps at different times of the day, or turn off if no one is going to be In. I presume you can control it on your phone if your out? It'll use the mains from your existing thermostat if you replace that with the Nest. Only if you want to put it somewhere else and not hard wired, you'll need a socket to power it. HTH
OFI
10 Jan 16 #49
Sorry little confused. There's the thermostat which fits to the front of the boiler and the control unit which fits anywhere else. The controls require the mains socket right?

Currently my basic controls, located on the wall opposite the boiler, have a battery powering them.
worthatryeh
10 Jan 16 #50
My understanding (might be wrong, but it's what I've seen) is that the heat link connect directly to your boiler and needs a 240v supply - this can replace your programmer. The round thermostat will replace your thermostat that you use to set your temperature, also needs a power supply - either take the one from your old thermostat or if installing somewhere different, then you may need a plug socket, eg if you're using the nest stand.

Ok thanks, wasn't sure just thought I'd comment in case it's the same and cheaper but had a feeling it might be older, I'd agree extra £50 worth it. I don't have any use for it but my dads been wanting a thermostat since the boiler was installed 3 years ago the installer lost the one that come with it and replacement is £70 might surprise him with this if it works with ours. Judging by what's happened regarding stock, B&Q is awful - I'd apologize saying out of stock but as you placed the order honor the deal once more stock arrives (should be unavailable for more orders) they clearly never expected everyone to bite the Nest bet they have stock really like JL Apple Watch deal, ha.

No point me ordering then..

Only ordered a few things from John Lewis, but I love JL's customer service they honored the Apple Watch £50 off to me after it expired and when more stock arrived a few days later (said I had a card with them with Apple stuff ect and missed out and they'd earn more than the £50 off over time on interest on the card - didn't say it's already paid off and is within interest free period lol).

FlexR
15 Jan 16 #69
I noticed that, isn't Nest in general 2 year anyway? Even B&Q's ect? I don't really do legal read ups so feel free to correct me if I'm reading this incorrectly ha.

Nest Labs, Inc. (“Nest Labs”), 3400 Hillview Avenue, Palo Alto, California USA, warrants to the owner of the enclosed product that the product contained in this box (“Product”) will be free from defects in materials and workmanship for a period of two (2) years from the date of delivery following the original retail purchase, and if a Nest Pro sells and installs the Product and enters a valid Nest Pro ID during setup, an additional three (3) years, resulting in a warranty period of five (5) years for that Product (collectively, the “Warranty Period”).

Much much better service from John Lewis straight from the outset when checking stock over the phone to collection. Lost out on the offer but rather my money albeit extra, ends up with someone that can get the job done and offer a level of customer service that's not difficult to attain and goes a long way.

17 Jan 16 #75
It's an abysmal show from B&Q. I waited all day for delivery, then telephoned customer services to see what's going on (after being on hold for 20 minutes), I was then told that there were "issues" and I wouldn't be receiving anything today. There was no suggestion when they might have more stock. I was told that I could have a refund, or wait. If I decided to wait, I would not receive any updates or e-mails from B&Q and would be left in the dark!
MarkyB77
17 Jan 16 #76

Looks like the discount code has stopped working as was looking at getting some Hue kit. No doubt they will start supplying the Nest now it's at full whack.
LordScrumptious
19 Jan 16 #78
Just contacted B&Q Customer Service as my order was still showing as “In Progress” been told that there is no stock and they have no delivery date.

There is an issue with their online system where it doesn’t know what the stock levels are!!! How a company like this can have such an antiquated system is beyond me, suffice to say the CS representative said they he had done taken a load of similar calls and been told to offer refunds.

If you have to do the same, make sure you ask them to remove all your details from the system to avoid junk mail and emails.

Now have to wait 3-days for the refund! These should be instantaneous when it is not the customers fault.

Avoid B&Q and as mentioned buy from John Lewis.

Regards

What a palaver!

In the hurry, it turns out the Nest that I got sold in JL was a 2nd gen, however I still paid 3rd gen price oddly enough. Just got it swapped over, didn't realise until someone asked me about hot water connections and realised they were missing on mine. Admit I didn't expect that to happen, oh well... sorted now. Worthing checking it says "now with hot water connections" on the wrapping of box on a little blue sticker at JL or anywhere else.

RE B&Q - My first order for the Nest, I chased it up on the phone a day after the expected delivery date, after having gone in to check and find it had not arrived. The chap on the phone wanted me to come in to store for a refund, advised him I won't be doing that and he eventually refunded over the phone, seemed like he didn't know the process.

I tried B&Q again with a separate order for the stand, when the voucher was working, as I assumed they would have stock of them seeing as its more a sundry item to the main unit and was showing as available online. Same thing happened. No call on the delivery day (yesterday) to say it hadn't come in or was delayed. This morning a lady phoned me up and said there were stock issues and she could refund, I accepted. I didn't ask about holding out for it... seemed like it could go on forever. She said she had made quite a few calls about the thermostats and there was a supply issue.

I would guess Screwfix is also affected as she said they supply B&Q, and seeing as the parent company is the same.
