Some of the posts on this thread are bordering on insanity. Twice I have been climbing in remote Moroccan mountains and stayed in Marrakesh - far safer than Glasgow at night. People who will not visit such countries due to vague terrorist threats are simple utter cowards, useless humans in my opinion. You want to be safe - stay in your wee British **** house. Want to experience life - grow a pair. Anyone who does not travel to Morocco due to a fear of terrorism is a person defeated by IS. You have done exactly what they wanted - they picked you out as an utter coward and you responded as they wished - you stopped living a normal life...Congratulations in giving in to a threat that doesn't even exist. If you are genuinely such an utterly pathetic coward that you are scared of terrorism then I suggest you leave the UK as eventually the UK will be hit big time. Absolutely AMAZED how cowardly some Brits are. I'm off to Northern South America next year...am I scared I will be kidnapped by drug gangs? No, because statistically I have more chance of winning the lottery. Anyone scared to visit Morocco is a complete coward.

"Visit the amazing Morocco"
Can't imagine the majority of holidaymakers will see much of Morocco when staying in an all inclusive resort 6 km from Marrakech's old quarter, although their is a Hotel courtesy bus to the centre..

If you go to Marakech stay in a Riad and see the real Morocco , not a hotel full of holidaymakers over indulging

More people are killed in police shootings in New York than terrorist attacks in Morocco and, in case you've forgotten, 3000 people were killed in a terrorist attack in New York 14 years ago.

You're a clown pal. Muslim countries pose a very clear increased risk to white brits at the current time. You might be prepared to take that risk with your life and that of your nearest and dearest, to save a few quid, but some of us think it's just not worth it. And I won't be in a bunker, I'll just be spending a bit more money to give my family that extra peace of mind.
MisterSkinflint
3 Jan 16 2 #34
There were 38 people murdered by Muslim extremists whilst lying on a beach in North Africa only 6 months ago. I can't expose my family to that sort of danger, and just before anyone really intelligent likens me to a human body part..... No it hasn't happened in Blackpool yet.
Vanderlust to MisterSkinflint
3 Jan 16 1 #36
North Africa is massive compared to Blackpool. But Blackpool has a relatively high rate of rape for the area, I guess you won't be taking your family there then either.
chaffordred
3 Jan 16 #37
Ignore the travel advice and go. I really hope you and your family have a good time. With all the money you save you could even book a second holiday to Sharm, but don't come crying when the UK government issue a travel ban and you have to use the blow up dinghy from the gift shop hotel to get back across the Mediterranean.
Vanderlust
3 Jan 16 1 #38
Wha exactly is this increased risk in percentage then?

Everyone I know from Edinburgh who went to the Middle East in 2015 had an amazing time. Have a friend who owns his second home in Marrakech and let's us have the keys when we want. Never heard anyone says anything bad about the place.

Did we all stop going to London after a few nuts lost the plot? Guess rising up in NI you see things differently, you don't let a minority of bellends stop you from living your life. I certainly won't live in fear and stop travelling because of the 'terrorism. More chance of getting hit by a bus.

I haven't stopped living my life, but there's nothing particular in Morocco to persuade me to go there, over places like The Canary Islands, Portugal, the Atlantic coast in France, The Carribbean etc, except for cost. And money isn't important compared to my families safety and happiness. Each to their own, and I'm not knocking anyone for going there, it's your choice, but the guy I quoted was being completely obnoxious based on the fact that some people don't want to go to North Africa, based on very real threats of terrorism.

What about it?
MRPRO_MO2012

Thanks OP this is hot.
RuudBullit
3 Jan 16 1 #44
We live and work in the UK, and as such, don't have a choice but to be aware and manage the threat. We know they will target big tourism centres, large gatherings of people etc.
Where we go on holiday is a completely free choice, we can decide to avoid the more dangerous places. And some of us will do that, even if it costs a bit more money, regardless of what people think.
You are more than welcome to stay in the house though.
Vanderlust
3 Jan 16 #45
Cool story. In here spreading Heil scaremongering but you think the other guy was obnoxious?

Anyone who acts disproportionately to statistical reality is being irrational. Anyone who spreads irrational fear is a scaremongerer.

What percentage of British tourists have been killed in Africa and the Middle East in the past few years? Now compare that to traffic and skiing accidents.

You can dress it up however you like. If you put money in front of the safety of your family, that's up to you. Don't expect other people to do it because you call it scaremongering. And the other guy is calling anyone who disagrees with him a ****. So yes, I do think he is being obnoxious. What's skiing got to do with anything?

If you don't feel comfortable about going there, don't go, it doesn't make you a ****. If you do feel comfortable about going, do so, that doesn't make you a **** either. Whether you like it or not the uk governments travel advice is there for a reason and if you are a white tourist in the Middle East/North Africa you WILL stand out. It just depends where and how many of the murderers that are out there happen to be at the time.

Agree with some of your points it's all risk and reward, some people are pro risk (or even a risk seeker = yourself) others are risk averse and will happily spend to go elsewhere.
Nothing wrong with either, thankfully we are not all the same.
Otherwise everyone would snap up these cheap deals to North Africa and eventually the uk government will have to take steps to bring them home, when a terrorist attack does happen..

IMHO If you want to go see Morocco read up on it, be a smart traveller and enjoy the Atlas Mountains, the markets, the beach towns, Live like a local and avoid the purely western bars and attractions.

If you just looking for the cheapest holiday, and have no interest in Morocco consider elsewhere, yes you'll pay extra but no point being in a hostile country with totally different culture and lifestyles..

I've been to Morocco with my kids this year and had a great time. We found the people friendly, genuine and generous. Surf beaches and Atlas mountains are stunning. It would be interesting to know, how many of you who have said that Morocco is unsafe would go to the United States?

Latest figures 32,000 Gun Deaths a Year!

Cinema - two people killed and nine others injured
School - 10 people killed and 7 more injured at Umpqua college in Roseburg - there were 52 school shootings in 2015 with multiple deaths.

Everywhere in the World there are bad people, Peter Sutcliffe, the Yorkshire Ripper is a British example, would that mean you no longer go to Yorkshire?

Travel broadens your horizons, I'm going to Morocco with my family during May half term.

I wanted to know the extent of mis information about dangers to UK citizens in Egypt. I made a FOI request to the FCO to get the statistics on murders of British tourists. Look at the numbers yourself and you will see that in the tourist areas such as Luxor the statistics do not support any danger at all during the past years when many people stopped visiting because of perceived risk. Yes I would feel more at risk in London. As they say the past is no indicator of the future but You don't need top live in ignorance Of the facts. You are missing a treat if you don't visit.
