Anyone know if this can be used to get HD video/Netflix etc wirelessly from my pc to a projector, and save having a long HDMI cable?
(pc is ethernet to router, and sound goes from pc to AV preamp via HDMI, in case these things matter)

I have a question of the otherway round with these devices, I already have a chromecast a NowTV & an android TV box which has a miracast app. Can you use these devices to send stuff from a TV to another one. ie from main TV to bedroom tv. And if you can once it is setup can the connection be started from the bedroom or would you have to tinker downstairs first.

Basically thinking of getting a lodger, and hoping he can stream the stuff from the downstairs tv into his room. I know you can send stuff from phones/tablets etc but no-ones mentioned whether you can grab from the tv.

Can also use a Chromecast to stream from computer to TV too, if you have one.

That isn't how this works. You connect to the device independently of your wifi connection. You may connect to it as a wireless device to configure it but otherwise you connect from your phone through a Miracast menu and not the wifi one. On a Windows laptop you connect to it as a wireless display and it will be added as a projector.

I bought one from BangGood just before Christmas (£8.68) I think it's gone up now it's not well reviewed on there now and mine only arrived on Friday so only had a quick go with it. It was able to stream media that I had stored locally on my phone without issue. I've also watched an hour long show on the iPlayer app it did stutter a couple of times but I actually think that's down to my phone being so far from my router. I then tested it with a Win8.1 laptop and it ran fine and well although there was a slight delay between mouse movements it was still perfectly usable.

In all I'm impressed and it hasn't suffered dropped frames like one of another brand a mate has. One major downside though on your phone is it requires the screen on all the time so drains the battery.

I dont know much about these dongle specifically, but the microsoft wireless hdmi dongle might be perfect for your needs.

I'm pretty sure you're right. You can only stream media files directly from the tablet, phone etc. However I've read about people streaming Netflix etc to Miracast, but I thought it was a direct connection, so not sure how that possible without a wired connection.

Unless there's now an option to connect out via your WiFi router. I'd be very weary of this if you want to stream Netflix etc.

I considered a USB to HDMI cable, but my mother in law is poorly, so with this she could watch on the tablet in one room and my father in law can watch on the TV. This is quite specific to their situation though!

Thanks OP. My in laws have wanted something like this so they can watch the tablet on their TV, so I've taken the plunge and will see how it goes.

Was going to get them a Chromecast at some point, but I like that Miracast links directly, rather than through their wifi.
