Is there anything left to say on the most popular — and arguably greatest — jazz LP of all time? Quite a lot, as it happens. For a start there is the matter of the master tapes. The original recording sessions for Kind of Blue took place at the Columbia 30th Street Studios in Manhattan, nicknamed ‘the Church’, in March and April 1959. During these sessions both a mono and a three-track stereo master were created, using a total of four tape recorders running in synchronisation — one prime recorder and one safety backup each for mono and stereo. The mono tapes have gone missing. Maybe they’re in your garden shed. Have a look. The two stereo tapes were stored safely in a vault for over three decades before anyone thought of taking them out for remastering.

Can you elaborate on this deal?
Am I making a one-off payment of £4.99 or am I signing my life away to a long-term direct debit subscription?

Future issues £14.99 so best to buy from the shops I'd say, as usual this is a first issue offer price

They are in the shops too if you can find one

Do you know which stores are stocking the first issue with the record included?
You are free to cancel at any time, all we ask for is 28 days notice as we may have recently sent you a subscription delivery. Our telephone lines are open Monday to Friday from 9AM to 5PM.
Looks like Issue 2 is Blue Train by John Coltrane for £9.99 so if you don't cancel in time you wouldn't be paying £14.99 till issue 3. Looks like you get a record cleaning kit free with first issue too so would say its worth the punt (unless you already have one)

Did you not feel a bit daft asking for a jazz mag?!! :stuck_out_tongue:
Awesome find! Even at £14.99 the future albums are good value in 180 too!

Nope. It's not in my shed. I prefer the original 'wonky' version where the hole wasn't dead center anyway.

Brilliant! I got one at the local newsagent to replace my DOL copy as I wasn't sure about the master source..

They are simply selling DOL reissues if you value music you will steer well clear.

How do you know it's a DOL reissue?
I'm not saying you're wrong, but it sounds like you're jumping to that conclusion.

Evidence? I was also a little worried about this, but it says Columbia all over the sleeve and no mention of DOL,
Sounds great to me. Absolute bargain.

What's DOL.. a rubbish pressing company of records?
Appears to be a Russian reissue label of Jazz & Blues music.

Bought myself on Friday, gave it a few spins and it sounds grand.
The mag you get with it is a bit lightweight on content but as it comes with a classic album on 180 vinyl for £5 you can't complain.

Worth a punt for a fiver. Even if it's that bad the cover would still look good in a vinyl record frame.

Great deal. I was actually looking to buy this album following purchase of a new turntable. Found it in Sainsbury's Brentwood on Sunday. Sounds great to me. Album itself isn't specially branded, so don't think it's a different pressing.
Reading T&C's of subscription you can get albums 2 & 3 with a free vinyl brush for £9.99, but after that they send you 2 albums every 28 days at a cost of £29.98. You can cancel any time, but think the notice period is 28 days, so you may find you get sent and charged for more albums than intended. Can always send them back, but that's a bit of a faff. Think I'll stick with just this one for now.
Fopp have a good selection of jazz on vinyl in the £7-12 range, so don't think future editions are a great deal at £14.99. This is a steal at £4.99 though. Have some heat.

At a fiver it was a steal for my 16 year old son who got his first turntable for Xmas and is building out a collection of contemporary stuff and classics.

They had a couple of copies in WH Smiths on Oxford St (Plaza) but they're up near the til, not on the shelf with the usual magazines.

Picked up from WHS in Middlesbrough yesterday and sounds the business. The second John Coltrane album is well worth £9.99 for the second issue. After that I would be more album specific. I understand from the mag that The Dave Brubeck Trio's 'Time Out is due soon and is well worth the price as it is hard to pick up the vinyl release for sub £20. Re the third release the Billie Holiday this sounds mint but is cheaper in HMV as £12.99 (In the Boro' store anyway)

For Jazz Fans there is a deluxe CD and/or vinyl release of John Coltrane's 'A Love Supreme' with loads of extra cuts etc due in next couple of weeks - now that is a classic album

Picked up a copy on Saturday at WH Smith.
Album still in it's cover but will be coming out soon
Was thinking of posting this myself as I thought first issue was a bargain. However it's plastered all over the TV. May buy the 2nd issue too as that still represents a bargain.
As a point on quality, it says on the web site they use the original masters where ever they can but there seems no mention of it on the record in this case (probably have to pay full price before that happens).

These are proper licensed products. I think Dol are an under the table bootleg label despite looking fairly nice, using the type if pressing plants that don't ask questions if you have the cash.
Its a bit hit and miss really and down to what they are cutting from, if they have an mp3 from a battered old vinyl copy then it probably won't sound any good.

I noticed on the record cover, despite looking like a genuine original Columbia pressing it says in small print that these have been produced as part of the Deagostini Jazz @ 33.3rpm editions* (*or something similiar) & not to be sold separately.
EDIT: I'm not a huge Jazz fan so I won't be going mad on this collection.
Badger1980

Yeah I saw that. Still they are reputable and won't be doing anything that is not fully licensed.
I imagine a lot of people will buy the first one but as time goes less and less will be sold, who knows they might gather a rep for being good represses which I think is likely and some of the rarer titles will become a great investment.
