I'm not sure where you get your statistics from. Cancun is situated within the state of Quintana Roo. The 163 murders were in Quintana Roo which has a population in excess of 1.5 million so no, Cancun does not have 26x the murders of London. I don't think anyone has said it's the safest place on earth but the most dangerous thing I've seen over there was my mother in law drinking tequila.

Parts of Mexico are very safe for foreigners. I have not met anybody who has actually been to Mexico and said 'damn this place is scary'. Drug dealers are businessmen, and have vested interest in not scaring off foreigners.
Mexico feels like first world country but quite cheap to travel.
Voted hot.

I had a good time in Mexico City, saw the Pyramids of the Sun and Moon and spent 10 days in Cancun. Wasn't scared at all, the scary thing is sitting at home not having adventures.

Well you can count yourself very lucky and privileged that you can enjoy such a life but maybe spare a thought for the many Mexicans who's lives have been blighted by the brutal violence that controls their country?

But you should correct for the fact that most visitors to Cancun are from the US. It might be quite safe for UK visitors unless they are caught in the crossfire
The problem is that due to the severe corruption, the crime figures cannot be trusted at all - this is a country at war and what we consider normal procedure definately does not appear to apply in Mexico. You will probably be fine going there but do so with your eyes open. If you get into any kind of trouble in one of the resorts, you should at least be aware that they may not want you to report any crimes (gotta keep the figures low - don't want to scare away the tourists).
Just ask yourself who owns the lucrative hotels, clubs and resorts? Have the locals somehow miraculously found a way to fight off the cartels/criminals that the rest of Mexico has been unable to do? I don't think so.
(...and for anyone following events in Mexico - "El Chapo" has apparently just been re-captured).

Murder rate in Cancun is 27 per 100,000
Murder rate due to guns in US is 10 per 100,000
Assuming that the NRA have an agreement so that US citizens must travel with weapons then if they drink plenty that must explain that would be consistent with US citizens shooting each other on holiday. I don't think you should unfairly accuse Mexicans of being dangerous :-D. What is the murder rate in Las Vegas another US party town.

From a population of 600 hundred thousand still makes it highly dangerous.
London has a population of 8 milion and a muder rate of 83.
Which makes Cancun have 26x the murders of London.
Cancun has population of 600,000 and a muder rate of 163.

Many people, myself included say they feel safer abroad than in London. Just how un-safe is London?

I went to Playa del Carmen in Mexico last year and can honestly say I felt safer walking around than say the streets of London. The locals welcome tourists and I am going again in 2017. One of the Mexican entertainers in our hotel explained Mexico City is pretty bad but that's approx 1000 miles from Cancun. The only thing I was scared about was meeting a snake or crocodile....which I never saw either....

Last years statistics are not released but for comparative analysis Quintana Roo (where Cancun is based in) had 163 of the 26,037 (0.62%). As with all countries (including our own) there are dangerous places. There were over 700 rapes in Las Vegas in 2014 but you know what, I think I'm gonna risk it as sampling what other countries have to offer remains appealing to me.

agree totally on the Mexico front. civil war taking place in front of your eyes. But last time I talked about this in a previous deal I got burned to a crisp, so good luck changing people's narrow minded opinions

:smirk:
Excessively violent crime and corruption seems to control all areas of Mexico's economy including the lucrative tourist market. I keep seeing people claim that the tourist areas are safe but it doesn't take much research to dig up many accounts of tourist balcony deaths, druggings/drownings ending in hospitalisations with massive medical bills, rampant police corruption and inability to report a crimes, very poor safety standards and so on. Have you considered that those in charge may not want anyone scaring away the tourist money and may go to great lengths to make sure everything appears safe?
I'm not saying don't go but I would think it would be wise to be aware that the country is in a desperate state - even if they try to hide it from you in the tourist areas. :disappointed:
