Liam has a point regarding hard drive space. Steam downloads the game to a temp folder and then installs to your "common" games folder. So I guess you will need 24.8 + 32 gigs to complete the process.

30 Dec 15#38
That's still only 55GB I've got 83GB left ... deleted summit else now so upto 100GB if this don't work I'm gonna have to message them ... says 129mbs download then says to launch the game so summit is up with it.

What CPU do you have? If you've got a 64bit capable CPU there's no reason you shouldn't be running a 64bit version of Windows. This game requires 6gb of RAM (8gb recommended) and with a 32bit Windows installed there's no way you could be using more than 3gb of RAM so you'd barely be able to run it even if it was 32bit compatible. Your PC either doesn't meet the required spec in the first place or it's being crippled by your OS.

It won't as Steam OS is Linux based when the vast majority of modern games are written to run on Windows and not Linux so they don't run on Steam OS. Ironically a 'gaming' OS has far less compatible games than regular Windows. IMHO Steam dropped a real clanger basing Steam OS off Linux instead of Windows.......
But I digress, red hot deal.

Never realised how requirements have moved on for the pc since over a year and a half ago since purchasing a PS4 every game I purchased was with in range of the spec so never bothered looking at the requirements of the games. since the ps4 and xbox one has come into play, guess they had to up the requirements to keep up with the times. so running a game on a 32 bit OS was a no brainer for the system build I own. Pentium G860... AMD HD 7770/
4GB Ram Windows 8.1/10/ 32bit... I'm a causal gamer not somebody tht spends **** loads on a system.. long as it plays me's happy  time for a upgrade I think :smirk:
It's hardly ironic. It's ridiculous to suggest that it could ever have been anything different. SteamOS has only been released (in the form of Steam Machines) a couple of months. It will take time to catch up and start to entice more AAA publishers to get on board (and a large part of that will be the forthcoming Vulkan graphics API).
It's remarkable that SteamOS has so many games already. At launch it probably had more than the PS4 and XBone combined. It probably had more *good* games as well. All the platforms library numbers are bulked up with Indie titles, so that's not even the preserve of SteamOS/Linux. It launched with more titles than any console in history. It also took a while for any number of AAA titles of note to appear on either of the traditional consoles. the only thing they really had in their favour was the guarantee that there would definitely *be* lots of good titles coming eventually. As far as I can see, until recently, they were pretty thin on the ground.
There is no way that SteamOS *could* have been 'built-on Windows'. For the project to work out and be controllable by Valve it really had be be built on either Linux or a BSD. Windows would never be able to give the solid console experience that is SteamOS's goal.
SteamOS and Steam Machine's may or may not work out, but I really hope they do. With a bit of refinement, a few hardware upgrades and more AAA publisher support they really could do well. I think that would benefit everyone. More choice is good.
reddragon105
30 Dec 15#64
That CPU is 64bit so you should install a 64bit OS. There's no reason not to - it will make no difference with 32bit software but any 64bit software will run more effectively - and that includes Windows, which basically means your whole PC. You would also have access to all of your 4gb of RAM, instead of the 3gb you're currently using - you've got 1gb going to waste! If you've upgraded from Windows 8 to 10 you'll be able to switch to 64bit just by reinstalling Windows - use the tool that creates a Windows 10 install disc/USB stick and select 64bit when it gives you the option.
I wouldn't say you really need to upgrade right now - your PC should be able to handle most things out now - but Mad Max is relatively demanding so I don't know what sort of performance you'd get. Either way, you should get at least a slight performance boost from your current system just from switching to 64bit Windows.

LOL already on it M8... I got a spare hard drive already in my system with Windows 8.1 on it. went to Asda this afternoon, picked up a Cruder Blade 8 GB SanDisk flash drive for £2  I've been eying up for days .... so is tht right then if I got a windows 8.1.. X86 they will automatically let me to choose if I make it a X64 or a X86 when I upgraded to Windows 10?.... I'm a old time windows user so never gave the 64 bit a chance because of how it use to bog down the system when previous installs on old machines cheers

I agree with your sentiments. A Independent Steam OS is required in this day and age. It keeps MS on their toes. The one game that would really bolster it, would be if Half life 3 was released exclusively on the OS. This of course will never happen.
I remember back in the day, installing Quake3 test on Linux in order to see the game running long before the win32 release. This forced me to have a look at Debian et al. I went back to Windows soon after.
reddragon105
30 Dec 15#68
If you go through the upgrade process it will just install whatever -bit you had with Windows 8.1, so upgrading goes 32bit -> 32bit or 64bit -> 64bit. But if you do a fresh install you'll get to choose (I think that goes for both Windows 8.1 and 10 but definitely for 10). Search for Microsoft's Windows 10 Media Creation Tool - it will burn a bootable DVD or make a USB stick for you and it will ask you whether you want 32 or 64bit as you set it up.

yep doing it now with the windows 8.1 attaching it to USB using the Windows 7 USB tool, that always works for with me no matter what version you got of windows. 30 Dec 15#72
Ah yeah the Windows 7 tool is great, I've used that loads, it's just that it's for converting downloaded ISOs to USB, which is great (so presumably you've already got 8.1 saved somewhere) but the Media Creation Tool is handy as it will download the latest version of 10 for you, so no prior download required and it will be up to date. I didn't have a great experience upgrading from 7 to 10 - PC a bit slow and too much space taken up on my SSD by the Win7 backup - so I used that to do a fresh install and it went very smoothly.
It's quite grindy but in a good way. If you're a bit OCD when it comes to gaming (gotta catch 'em all!) and like the look of the combat and driving then it will be right up your street.

The way Windows 10 works, once you've upgraded and activated you can do a fresh install and it will automatically activate again because it will recognise your PC, but I don't know anything about how Insider works so I don't know if you can upgrade from that to the release version or if you can do a fresh install and it will automatically activate. Do you have a product key for it? Do you know if it entitles you to the full release version?

great game, looks amazing on anything and fun to play even if you do get a bit sick of chasing down map icons for upgrades (same as any modern "open-world" game). bargain for this price but it's been sub-£10 since a couple of weeks after launch (yet can't seem to find MGS5 under £20).
as for the windows vs. steam OS discussion, i do like the idea of steam OS but there are still notable omissions from it's lineup and reliable news sites have reported heavy performance hits running games on it vs. windows (understandable really, the most used OS will get the quickest updates and drivers). considering steam already has a big picture mode and great streaming support i fail to see why anyone would bother with steamOS in it's current state.

This game is terrific. Planned on playing for a couple of hours yesterday but was still driving round the wastelands at 2am. Fantastic scale and pacing. If you are a fan of open world games that have a stack of content, then this is just the ticket. Great basic batman style combat with tight controls. The cars control great not too sloppy nor tight. Basically this is what I was hoping from iD's Rage all those years ago. The changing light really affects the vast environments, making me sometimes stop mid mission just to take in the vista.
Highly recommended.
