From the linx 8 thread

You can activate the subscription on another device, or even sell/gift the subscription to someone else by following the instructions below.

1) Run Office for the first time, it should take you to an activation webpage.

2) DO NOT SIGN IN. Copy the web address, you should see 5 sets of 5 capitalised alpha numerals in a string of 5, similar to the one below

XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX

3) THATS IT! Thats the code you'll need to activate on another device!

Since the sainsburys sale the Linx name brings back bad memories cause I didn't get it... :disappointed: I think I'll wait for an 8 inch one, 7 is just too close to my 5.5" phone but go for it if you need a windows tab, I don't think you'd regret it for £40.

Might just be me but I found Windows on a 7" Linx an underwhelming experience. We also have a 10" Linx and it doesn't get used much compared to all the other non-essential HUKD purchases.

Hard not to compare to the Sainsburys deal which was much better. It could be a sign if more prices for Linx 8 going to a similar price making this not worth it. However - for now - good deal. Just not nearly as good.

Check the output on the mains adapter if you get one of these. The one I purchased from amazon didn't come with a high enough rated plug. After a while of wondering why it took a lifetime to charge, and switched off if used while on charge, I replaced the adapter and now it works like a dream.
Handy for work, but I find that even tablet mode is abit clunky for a 7 inch screen, especially of you have multiple windows open.
Also use it as a second screen for the xbox one with the xbox app. its not the greatest for streaming, but it's ok for browsing and installing games. Found the lag rate slightly too high to play COD or the like properly though, but maybe that's just my network connections.

Missed out on the Linx 8 at Sainsburys. I like my Linx 7. Was streaming Fallout 4 to it yesterday using Steam in-home streaming whilst mounted to a Dual Shock 4 controller connected to the tablet using an OTG cable. Worked great, even limited to 2.4Ghz WiFi

Bought one of these pre-xmas when the eBay offer was on.
VERY happy for £40, went ahead and installed the Win10 update and have so far had zero problems.

Sometimes it's slow to power on from standby but otherwise it does exactly what I needed from it. Some web browsing and I copy videos to it to watch on the bus for my commute.

There are a ton of uses for a device like this, and Windows 10 helps that.

Also +1 on the charger tip above - be prepared to replace the plug that comes with this immediately!!

Really, how is it better than using a Firestick with Kodi installed?
I have this tablet and haven't really found a use for it yet. Runs pretty slow with only a few tabs open and the battery life is not great. Charging takes an age with a normal phone charger but take on board the comments regarding using a more powerful one instead.
The only real advantage of this over a Firestick is you could store media on the device where as with the Firestick you would need another device for the media for example a pc or NAS. To be honest ever since I've been using Kodi (with tv addons) I hardly ever need to use any local media as stream it all now.

I have an 8" Windows tablet and it's way too small to do anything useful in desktop mode. I'm very happy with Windows for laptops and desktops but it's an awful experience in a tablet, especially if you are used to Android or iOS. Perhaps I'm just not familiar enough with it but I wouldn't recommend one.

Maybe, just possibly, given that it IS an 8" windows TABLET, you should try running it in tablet mode??

I am, I think?

Skype app does not work, it's replaced with the desktop version - and too small to use in my opinion
app version of internet explorer is hopeless, it's slow and tends to hang for some reason.
Firefox works well enough but that was installed via the desktop.

As I suggested before, perhaps I'm just not understanding how a Windows Tablet is supposed to work but based on my current experience as a "Tablet" it's third rate at best.

Just the fact that its running windows alone makes it a far more versatile and far easier to configure device than the firestick. It has bluetooth. You can add a usb device and charge at the same time. web browsing can be done on this, which ive done with no issue even if you do only have 3-4 tabs open its more than on the firestick. You can take it away and use as a standalone device for kodi seeing as it has a screen. this little tablet is a full on PC for next to nothing so at £40, or less if you sold the office license its a bargain for just running Kodi, anything more is a great bonus.

Also, setting up teamviewer or any other remote support application is easier on this if youre giving it to a friend/parents for a kodi setup, so you can offer remote support, which you know you'll have to do if its your parents using it!!!
gtd65
14 Jan 16 #76
Is there anything similar to the Android KODI compilation called TVADDONS that comes pre-configured for Windows?
Jimmyboy
14 Jan 16 1 #77
You could just install Kodi and TV addons on this. TV addons is just an add on for Kodi so any device running Kodi can have the add on.

A warning for anyone planning to sell the Office key on Ebay. It appears that it might only be valid for a tablet and not a PC. I sold the key from my Linx 8 yesterday and have just received the following message from the buyer:

"Hi, I've been trying to download Office using the key you supplied by ran into difficulties so I contacted Microsoft. They asked me for the product key which I gave them and they told me it wouldn't work because this product key is for tablets only!"
ferdy147 to neil37
16 Jan 16 #80
Reckon the buyer is trying it on - that's the problem with selling the key on eBay.

The code is for one tablet and on PC (laptop /desktop). Already got a linx7 and used on the tablet and my laptop. Ordered another one as it's a no brainer at this price... Wish the 8" sainsburys deal I was hoping to collect on Monday had worked for me though!

16 Jan 16 #81
TVADDONS is down for the time being, while they bring out a new version. I'm really trying to see the point of a Windows tablet but not seeing it at all.. It's probably ok with a larger screen, of at least 10"

Great, thanks.

I ordered one half an hour ago. I already have a Linx1010, which I bought in the eBay Cyber Monday sale (£119 with keyboard) and have found it to be an excellent machine. With the same storage and only half the RAM, the Linx 7 will be a bit of an experiment, but as I don't need Office365, I will extract the key and offer it around my friends to offset the cost a little.

For those not already aware, it IS possible to charge the Linx 7 while using it's USB OTG port for peripherals. I have ordered the adapter hub and both should arrive pretty much together.

Just updated my 8" Insignia 8.1 tablet to 10 and I'm back to 8.1 again.

I really do not see the benefit - as much as I really cannot stand 8.1.

The Windows experience on a small screen is horrendous!
paul_merton
20 Jan 16 #90
Mine arrived a couple of days ago and I had a world of pain trying to upgrade it to Windows 10, even though that was the first thing I tried to do after turning it on!

Firstly, it took over 24 hours to download it. Windows Update kept showing that it was downloading Windows 10, but nothing was actually travelling across the network. I don't know why, but it suddenly worked after a day, downloading all 3gb or so in about half an hour.

Then when it rebooted for the first time during the installation process, the screen went all fuzzy, like static on an analogue TV. This disappeared after rebooting it again, but then it just sat on the Windows 10 start screen for half an hour before I gave up and rebooted it.

It's all working fine now, although it's very slow at doing pretty much anything, and I can already see what people mean about 7" not being large enough, even when you're using it in tablet mode.

I'm still not entirely sure why I bought it, but hey, it was only 40 quid
gtd65 to paul_merton
20 Jan 16 #92
Yeah I was lucky to buy mine in the USA for about 25 quid ($40). On a site called cowboom dot com.

The fonts/text are miniscule with the smaller screen and it's not like Android where you can normally just pinch zoom to enlarge.

I'd have expected MS to have made a better option for Skype but they seem to have messed that up as well!
ferdy147
20 Jan 16 #91
Managed to update mine no problem. Took a few hours because it had to do all the windows updates first and then the windows 10 download/update.

Never found it slow for what I've done....but then I haven't been using photoshop!

This is my 2nd linx tablet 7 and I'm a big fan. Yes it can be a bit fiddly but it's to be expected on a 7" screen. Love being able to run full windows apps on a tab.

ict
23 Jan 16 #94
Just to add to my previous comment - the Linx7 arrived from Game as planned on Friday and I started out by installing Macrium Reflect (free) to take a whole system backup. With the backup safe on a bootable USB stick, I can go back to Windows 8.1 anytime, so I left it overnight to download all the Win 8.1 updates and then downloaded and installed windows 10. The download toon about 2 hours, and I left it installing when I went out, so by the time I was back it was sat at the screen you get on a new installation asking you to tell it your location and language.

I've got to say it has all been flawless so far. I don't expect lots from a £40 PC but an very happy it works plugged into my 24" monitor, USB keyboard, wireless mouse and runs the graphics in the native 1920x1200 pixel mode and seems very usable.

There are threads on here and Linxtablet.com with details of the bits to get, but to do what I have done, you need a micro HDMI to DVI cable (£2 from China) and a USB OTG charging hub (£8 from eBay). The standard power supply is barely powerful enough to charge the Linx in this configuration, but it does slowly charge and certainly doesn't go flat.

Hope this helps some who did pick this offer up. :-)
