At £129 think this is cheap. I've got one myself and like it a lot, the wireless SW is a bonus, hate wires.

Paid more than this sadly.

I don't ever blame the young lads that they employ, it's greedy management that are pushing them to sell these ridiculous cables/insurance/set up DVD's.

It's a detrimental system that both puts pressure on the employee to hit a target on scam-type peripherals, and pressure on the customer to buy stuff they don't actually need. I'm surprised this type of selling still exists to be honest..

Will this work with a pc? I have limited space for speakers so was thinking a soundbar may fit better.

I don't see why not, if your PCs has the right connections on its sound card, e,g optical (spdif), red and white audio, or even 3.5mm headphone connection, might even find if you have Bluetooth it may work from that option.

Has you TV or monitor got the right connections on the set, you don't really need to feed it through the pic. Though this takes up more space than say one of those logitech z213 speaker set for PCs for example

At the time, the lg one was 129.00, it's now 149 and the panny was full price, Amazon also have 250 watt panny model for 155.00, there's loads of sounds bars out there. It's nice to have a good spe choices around 150 ish mark at the moment with high specs, normally all above 200, it's good to go and try them out, like you did. Most people just match it the same brand bars with the tv brand.

£129.00 was a nice price for most people's budgets it seems, good specs and sound for the price.

THIS DEAL is better IMO, I just tried both in currys, the panny sounds much better, more volume, bass, treble, it just sounded clearer, so I am not sure why the other deal is cold.

Just wanted to know if anyone has taken out the Knowhow care plan for an extra £30? I don't normally buy extended warranties but my last LG soundbar and subwoofer stopped working within 2 years, although I must admit I called LG about it and as a one off gesture they replaced the subwoofer at no charge.

The screws should be wrapped in a small pack of foam similar to that the bar and sub are wrapped in, easy to miss.

In truth does the gold actually do anything? Or is it just for show and to support mark up on the price? Back in the day when we were using scart leads (remember them!?), I had plain ones and gold plated ones, never noticed any difference.

When you said 'similar spec' I didn't realise your idea of similar was quite as varied as the alternatives you mentioned. They're both much less powerful and the hitachi lacks a separate subwoofer and the Samsung has a wired subwoofer.
There's an LG one with a wired subwoofer that I think is 300w total for £99.
You'll need to be clearer on what your requirements are if you're after recommendations.

Edit: I fibbed, the LG for £99 is also 120w -

Out of the two would look at the Samsung, as it has a sub, Yamaha models are worth a look at though are more expensive. If you looking for clear sound and depth and isn't as loud as your tv soundbars with out subs are okay and you will hear the extra sounds, footsteps, rain, doors shutting.

However add one with a sub, it really brings you to viewing to life, a lot a people go on about the best quality picture is required, however try watching you fav film, program, inferior sound. After having a soundbars for over a year now, I have just changed it back to my normal TVs speakers, I was shocked at how bad it was.

Yep I would recommend one with a sub where possible, even if it's not wireless

Cold. I had issues with an LG Soundbar and TV. The SENIOR LG support technician (Richard) told me he wouldn't buy one, his exact words were "I would not use this technology in my home". 5 Jan 16 #90
For a home sound system, there is no audible difference. You are indoors so it is not going to rust (if it does you have more serious issues to worry about in your home). Copper is a better conductor than Gold, so the starting point with a new gold-plated connector is that it performs worse than a standard connector. When it comes to digital cables (e.g HDMI) then gold connectors have no advantage at all over standard connectors.

No such thing as wireless and avoiding cables in reality, everything needs power which means a cable. A non wireless sound bar is no big deal, is not like you see any cables anyway as most place the sound bar directly above or below the TV.

No doubt about it is though, is above average quality sound bar and a good product.

4 Jan 16 1 #75
Yes this is unfortunately the case with many soundbars, where small drivers combine with the sub to deliver the top and bottom-ends, but the mid range will be lacking or very poor. The same is usually the case with 2.1 PC speakers.
You need a minimum size of driver (I'd say 4 inches is the minimum, 6 inches better) for acceptable midrange.

I am so very tempted but having invested a considerable amount of money in a wired set-up I shall resist. As for the gold plated optical and HDMI cables, obvious over-priced attempt by Curry's staff, and as for that extended warranty shyte, I know that mentioning SOGA is like a stake in their heart.

Picked one up today from the only Currys nearby that had any left in stock. They did indeed try to convince me I needed an optical cable (and the only one you could see behind the counter was £50.. next to the £50-90 HDMI cables!!!) even though I told them I have a spare HDMI cable and can therefore use ARC on my new Samsung TV. They tried to make out that with HDMI I'd need to keep turning the soundbar on separately or some such vague BS (and it turned out that's exactly what it was). After failing with that they also tried to get me to buy an extended warranty!

All I needed to do to enable HDMI ARC was to have Anynet+(HDMI-CEC) turned on and then to select Receiver(HDMI) in the speaker list. The soundbar now turns on/off, volume up/down, etc. with the Sky/TV remote. Overall, I'm extremely pleased with it as it's a massive upgrade from the tinny TV speakers.

Thanks for this deal, I'm having a problem with my Samsung TV and LG soundbar remembering its using ARC. I'd really appreciate some advice from the experienced audiophiles on here, if that's ok,

We currently have an LG Smart tv and a Sony 5.1 blu-ray surround system. The Sony blu-ray player fan makes a hell of a racket. It constantly kicks in and you can hear it over anything else going on. Even when we only use it for the speakers for watching the tv without playing any actual dvd/blu-rays and it's really annoying and distracting. Would we be able to swap out the Sony subwoofer for this LG subwoofer and soundbar and still be able to utilise the smaller speakers belonging to the rest of the Sony surround system? Will they work in conjunction with eachother/without the Sony subwoofer? If that makes any sense.

If you go instore to get this then beware Curries trying to Scam you into buying 'Gold Cables' with this soundbar in some form of £200 package deal. The cables are around £50 each and I'm fairly sure the 'savings' that they offer for the two are just made up prices with fake value.

Salesman tried telling me that I needed to buy them or the soundbar would not connect to my Sony TV, but you can get a decent optical anywhere else for less. Ended up not buying the soundbar because it makes you question if the bar itself is even worth £120. Buyer Beware!

LG NB4540 - currys are selling for £199 just now.

Anyone found a useful Dolby guide as to the differences between 2.1, 4.1 and 5.1?

I did find an article that said 2.1 was better for music, 5.1 is better for films and games - but I'm not sure I'd even notice the difference.

Probably going for the £129 one from currys, all I want is to improve the sound from the TV a bit, I'm not after something that'll turn the living room into a cinema experience to match our local cineworld.

For me a major plus is that the soundbar and subwoofer are Bluetooth and how well it'll work with the TV (60JL9000 which is a rebranded LG)

Great soundbar, bought to use with my new 4K Philips tv via Philips Easylink(Arc) but even via the ARC HDMI socket & with a genuine Philips HDMI highspeed + Ethernet cable it will not connect. I'm using via the optical port but still great sound and the soundbar turns off and back on in sync with the TV. The manual voice sync setting is useful on the remote as when using the Virgin Tivo box and Netflix when streaming in 5.1 sound output I need to change to -250ms to match the lips, everything else works fine on the default 0ms with the sound delay turned off on the TV. Overall a great soundbar.

This has been on sale at this price since their Black Friday event. I got it then and I am very pleased, good quality sound for the price. Connects to my LG to flawlessly

Bought one last week. using it in my bedroom with none smart Samsung TV. I've fixed it to the wall using the included brackets. Subwoofer under my bed. Sounds great. Samsung TV remote works with it, without having to do anything

Hi mate, can it work with just an HDMI cable? Or will I need an optical one?
sheppy124
2 Jan 16 1 #34
Had the more expensive one £199.99 version for a year, cannot fault it, If the 2.1 at £129.99 has the same features it will be a good buy, though if you can spend the extra get the 3.1 one, looks great, sounds great. Got mine for the hdmi in and out and its ability to replace the tv speaker controls on my lg tv. Works great with the sky remote, Have mine in the arc hdmi feature, turn the tv on it comes on automatically, tv off, turns off then sky remote controls the volume. The only niggle is the blu tooth feature for me, to use this you have to scroll through the function to turn this on, its not always on the background or if the option to have it set like that.

Hi mate which 3.1 system are you referring to?

Optical doesn't support HD audio so go with HDMI. Cable quality is the same deal.

Digital cables are all the same. It is either a 1 or 0 being transmitted and received. Analogue cables are a whole different matter and quality increases with price.

I'm currently using mine with hdmi via the arc. Would an optical cable be better, and if so, is it like hdmi where a £1 is as good as a£50 one, or should I get a decent one?

1 Jan 16 2 #20
they should just built speakers into the TV
Teasy to zebrum

Much rather have a slim TV (good speakers and subwoofer is going to make a TV much thicker) and choose my own speakers, especially considering you can't get true surround sound without separate rear speakers.

No, it's the NB4540. I bought it on boxing day, and it works flawlessly with my Lg TV...

My dads got this and I'm thinking of getting it. Is there any other codes off to make it even cheaper ? I've searched and seen a upto 5% off at top cash back but not sure how much of the 5% it will be

Hey guys, would I lose much functionality if I connected this to my Samsung smart tv? I want a wireless sub but don't wanna pay the over inflated prices of the Samsung branded ones. thanks
