Hi guys, just got my red leather back (511) on Friday, the phone is great but battery lasts 1 day max currently, hopefully after a few days it will start lasting more as it gets used to my using of the phone. Need some help with a couple of things if anyone can advise:
1)Need to get rid of Voda branding (splash screen & update services/apps) to hopefully improve battery life and performance, how do you do that and is there a risk of bricking the phone?
2)Would you guys suggest upgrading to Marshmellow? Will it improve battery life? And also what's the best way to do that? Will it remove the Voda splash screen and update apps?
Hoping for some help to make the best out of this phone! Thanks!

Anyone else taking a battery hit with MM6, Android System and Google Play Services? I had a few good days and now Android System and Google Play Services shows high % when looking at battery stats.
My on screen time has drastically dropped also even though use the phone in the same manner daily.
It still better than my previous phone but getting a tad annoyed as a couple of colleagues don't have the issue and get good battery life for similar usage.

I upgrade from LP to MM yesterday, and my battery has improved markedly. I only got the phone on Tuesday, but I have been charging the phone 2 or 3 times a day when I first bought it. Since upgrading last night, I charged my battery around 10pm, and turned the phone off until around 10:30 this morning. The battery is now around 30%, and the phone has not been charged since last night.

I had LG Bridge switched on, and I had the LG drivers from the website. I think the LG Bridge is incompatible with Windows 10, which is what my laptop runs on. However, I did manage to get both my husband's phone, and mine, updated to Marshmallow. I used a program from XDA called LGUP, as advised by @Glix, and found the relevant kdz file to run the LGUP program. The phones are both on stock Marshmallow now, with no sign of the Vodafone boot menu. I ran LGUP as an update, so that I was able to keep all my apps, files, etc, as they were before.
Thanks for your help everyone.

I got this phone yesterday, and I am trying to get it to work with LG Bridge. The bridge recognises that it is an LG G4, but it cannot do anything with it. I just get the message "Cannot manage your mobile device. Try again later." I have tried installing the drivers from the LG website, and installing the drivers directly from the phone, on the USB connection screen. I have tried it with USB debugging on, and USB debugging off. None of these combinations work; and the message above is shown. Any ideas, anyone?

Try installing: LGUP_8994_DLL_Ver_0_0_3_23.msi
Then LGUP_Install_Ver_1_14_3.msi.
I did notice under settings->Networks->Share & connect there is an LG bridge option. Not sure if that is needed to be set when connecting to a PC

As I said in an earlier post, if you had to send it in, they would probably look for the bootloader status and as you are not unlocking it, the warranty should be fine with LG.
Why would an update that their software lets you flash with no Warranty warnings/messages invalidate your warranty? :stuck_out_tongue:
Plus if you got the dreaded bootloop, how would they check which build you are running as all they see is the booting logo, I'm guessing if bootloader unlocked would show the unlocked icon on that screen as it does on other devices.

Thanks, I had a quick look at this earlier. Would this type of modification invalidate my warranty? I only got the phone on Monday, and I don't want to do any damage in that way. I am no stranger to rooting, installing custom roms, etc, but I have never done this process before.

I've never found the battery usage indicator to be that accurate. If something is sitting in the cache, then it's been running at some point, possibly preventing the cpu cores from parking/sleeping.
The LG Smart function is good at spotting battery sipping apps, hard to tell though if it monitors background apps.
NiceButDim
19 Jan 16#86
But is that a big problem? I can't see it in my list of things that have used any power. I suspect it is actually just sitting in memory not doing much harm (or good). The phone has lots or ROM and RAM also so its not like in my old Moto G where ROM and RAM were a scarce resource.

I just looked at my OH's phone and I can hardly see any Vodafone branding TBH, apart from the startup splash screen and one app 'Vodafone updates' which can't be removed.
If you are staying on LG's Lollipop then I'm not sure I can see a very compelling reason to overwrite the branding with unbranded LG images?
Glix to NiceButDim
19 Jan 16#85
Vodafone's update app runs as a service, and you can't freeze or uninstall it without root. And of course it doesn't work when you are not on the Vodafone network.
Glix
19 Jan 16#83
Easiest way, at least for me to remove the branding:
Create rooted version of Vodafone system.img.
Dump O2 version of /cust on top of the vodafone version overwriting the cust_path_mapping.cfg file and other files.
Reboot.
Done.
Now on v10d.

Yeah, still just give me http 400 errors. Lge don't like me clearly. :stuck_out_tongue:
Happy with the O2 version, no O2 branding, and all I had to do was get rid of the o2 home page.
Once MM is stable and all of the features are sorted out in the LG version, I'll switch over, or go custom once I'm 6 months in and unlocked the BL. For now root is enough to tidy up LP.
NiceButDim
17 Jan 16#76
Firstly ignore the IMEI checker, just search the table. The links aren't dead for me. I think they actually get the firmware from LGE and the duplicates appear to point to the same firmware on different sites, but using the same lookup key.
Glix
17 Jan 16#75
I checked that site, it doesn't recognise my imei, and it doesn't help that there are 2 listed 81510c/d firmwares and the links are dead.
So using LGUP you should atleast be able to remove the Vodafone branding and also be able to return it to out of the box firmware.
Also, not suprisingly really, the OTA updates use IMEI to determine version. The model suffix is tied to the IMEI: You can't change it. I expect that if you install an OTA update it will re-install branding. But I guess it is no big deal if you can LGUP to a non branded version.

I don't have a phone to play with ATM. My OH has one of these phones and she hides it when I say 'firmware'.
I did do a bit of research and my theory is that if you go to http://devtester.ro/projects/lg-firmwares/country.php?country=United+Kingdom and search for AVDFLR (the Vodafone model suffix) you will get the H81510C_00 firmware with Vodafone branding. If you search for AGBRLD you'll get generic UK H81510C_00 firmware.

I found that I got an annoying mcc mnc warning message (that 23415,FF is not avaiable {yes that's not a my typo}) on every boot when I tried the EU open d version 10, and no amount of fiddling with the /CUST folder would make it go away.
Version 10 = 5.1, the letter is just for region.
Can you dump your /CUST folder from the vodafone rom before you flash? I'll dump both the O2 and EU versions.
I don't think an OTA update will install branding, I found I had to do a refurbish install to fully get rid of the Vodafone parts.
Order I tried:
Installed as Update H81510C_00_2.kdz = Vodafone parts still present, more Vodafone junk apps got added. MCC warning message.
Refurbished with H81510C_00_2.kdz = Vodafone parts gone. MCC warning message.
Installed as Update Europe OPEN H81510D.kdz = Vodafone parts sill gone but MCC warning message.
Installed as Update and then Refurb UK O2 H815 10C.kdz = No Vodafone, no MCC warning.
Software version still shows as V10c-234-15, android 5.1, kernel 3.10.49, and build LMY47D.

I assume that is still Lolllipop. How does one (did you) choose a file for your device? I reckon I would have opted for the Europe OPEN H81510D.kdz file just because it is newer. But I have absolutely no idea if that would have been wise or even how to find out if a firmware is compatible. Does anyone know what firmwares are compatible?
Also, once new firmware is installed do the devices get OTA updates and will they then return to the original branding. Probably not the right forum to ask but just in case someone knows the answers

You have to unlock the bootloader to flash generic ROMs on LG phones. If you try flashing a generic ROM with the LG flashing tool you just end up with the same ROM/splash screen etc. They're not as easy to flash as Samsungs. If you can get a SIM free G4 for not much more than this then I think it's advisable.
