read (450MB/s) and write (245MB/s) hardly 'very slow' is it?? Just because you can buy faster internal drives this is still very fast. It's a USB drive...
No matter the content of this deal, it is a shame that you can't seem to post anything on here without receiving negative feedback.

Slow for an ssd? yes, slow in general? no.

Thanx for a more detailed reply. I stand corrected, this is a good deal. (which I never said it wasn't anyway)

I don't understand people that complain is slow. If you check almost any other external ssd/usb speed is similar. But stop comparing it with internal ssd on a Sata3 connection.
Compact/SSD size:
Integral 512GB, £139.19: Read 230 MB/s and write 140MB/s
SanDisk Extreme 500 Portable SSD 480GB, £151.99: Read 270MB/s and write 205MB/s.
(all prices from Amazon UK as pero 19/01/2016)
So the Lexar is one of the fastest, and by far the cheapest.

Thanks for taking the time to explain, (both to you and the others) I was simply curious as I have never actually seen an external ssd used so was wondering.
Also 850 Evo is 120£ normal price, it goes under a 100£ on a good deal and you can get a SanDisk 480GB one which has 500/500 read write for 80£ and enclosure is about 5-10£ so you can get a faster drive for about 15£ more. I am just saying as an alternative option if you need speed, I still think this is a good deal for people who have a use for it.
Much faster than a normal 2.5 spindle based HDD. Not up there with modern SSD's though, but then again, for this price you shouldn't expect it to be.
A Samsung 850 EVO 500GB costs ~£120 + external enclosure, so a significant saving.
I use a SSD on USB3 as I do a lot of coding and development work (Databases / C++ and so on). It makes a huge difference.

The price is actually 72.01£ if you use an euro card, (or no currency exchange fee card such as that Halifax).
This is a really good price for a 512GB SSD's, especially considering the internal standard ones have only recently started going for under a 100£ (and are very good deals at 80£ today).
I am curious what someone would use one of these for? As far as I can tell they are fast and still relatively low capacity drives. I would really like to know if anyone is using one of these and for what?
All in all a very good find and heat given.

Exactly what the title suggests - programs that have a data intensive workflow (video editing/sound production) when out and about. I have a workflow drive but its only a 2.5 drive. Quick enough for the 1080p video work I do, and the church I work for don't need more or have use for more than that, but I'll invest in something like this when I get a newer, even more beastly laptop that could do justice for 4k.
Tl;dr - not many uses unless you are doing workflow based stuff on the go. Cheap for what it is though

Personally, I'm using them for virtual machines. Have to spin up test boxes regularly that are only of the order of a couple of GB in size. Have a 120GB SSD in an external USB3 enclosure so they all sit on that. Difference is incredible - some MySQL benchmark queries that use temp tables on disk went from 30 minutes to 40 seconds...

The main point of this product is that it is part of a professional workflow system designed for photographers. You get a desktop hub into which 4 separate modules can be installed. These include the storage device shown here, and also card readers for the various card types used in dSLR cameras. Hubs are available in USB3 and Thunderbolt2. As a standalone SSD based 512GB portable hard drive, it would be hard to find anything comparable. Heat from me. (NB, I have two of these, a CF card reader and an SD card reader in my HR1 (USB3) hub.)

For a start I NEVER said it was a poor deal. Or that i could find a better one.
All i said was this is a slow drive, Which it is.
When people look for an SSD they could find a cheaper drive and have slow speed. But they tend to go for a higher priced faster drive which has 540 read and Write speeds.
Buts its still SLOW regardless of what you think, the write speed is slow

I'm sure we're all looking forward to your post of a faster external SSD at this (or better) price.
No? Then surely this, by definition is a good deal for the type of product it is.

i can't think of anything more pointless than a usb (crippled) ssd! why not esata?
that apart, does anyone know the drive inside, if its a decent model (seems its crucial brand) this could be a pretty good price if it can be removed from the external enclosure.

Looking at the teardown on this REVIEW it doesn't look like you can, unless your comfortable de-soldering a USB controller and soldering on a Sata controller :disappointed:

The speed is limited by the drive itself as USB 3.0 is fast enough for a typical SATA SSD.
eSATA never had sufficient traction and is now a legacy interface and doesn't seem to be used at all these days in new PCs although I imagine there are a few exceptions.

I don't think it has a 2.5" SATA SSD inside. I think it's made up from Crucial memory, same found in USB flash drives. I can't find any full specs on it, but the speeds are very slow
