This is a great holiday that incorporates a road trip fro LA to San Francisco and a holiday to Hawaii in May 2016. Prices included car hire, all hotels and internal flights. 15 nights from 25th April until 9th May.
25th April-29th April
You will fly from Manchester to Dublin and then from Dublin to Los Angeles (flights have a very brief stop in London but you can't avoid this). If you wanted a city break in Dublin you could always head down the day before. Once in LA you can collect hire car and drive to the Regency Inn where you will stay for 4 nights. This is ample time to explore the surrounding areas.
29th April
Drive to Pismo Beach where you'll just spend 1 night at the Quality Inn which good Tripadvisor reviews.
30th-2nd April
Drive to Monterey and spend 2 nights in Monterey 8.
2nd-4th May
Spend two nights in San Francisco at the Red Coach Motor Inn also rated highly on Tripadvisor. You could cut down time in LA and spend longer in San Fran if you wished.
4th-9th May
You'll fly to Hawaii and spend 5 nights nr Waikiki beach. It's easy to get about and the buses are frequent and cheap so you can access Diamond Head, Hanauma Bay, the amazing Koko trail and further north. Strongly recommend Pearl Harbour easy to do on bus and also Punchbowl cemetery.

I've found that to reach LA from Manchester you HAVE to fly via Heathrow, for around £500.
But from Dublin to LA (also via Heathrow, likely on the SAME connecting flight) is around £320!
Factor in a Ryanair flight from Manchester to Dublin and you STILL save about £150
(At least that's the case for the flights I was looking at for early October)

There nothing much to do in Monterey, but it's a good stop over driving from San Fran to LA.
Take the Pacific coast highway route. Amazing scenery.

As with the Australian road trip, half decent long haul flights and great effort, but planned so specifically it's almost meaningless.
Maybe I've just been doing them wrong, but the whole point of a road trip to me was always the freedom, not being constrained to a tightly planned schedule!

This is just an example, like the Australia one you can adjust parts of the itinerary and with a bit of jiggling you may find the flights at similar prices too. I like to book my accommodation in advance as I really like to know where I am staying rather than take my chances after a some very dodgy accommodation in Australia I learned my lesson. If you have a tight itinerary too then planning can help. If it's a few months where you don't have a tight schedule then it's different. Of course you could just stop at motels en eroute too and not book anything in advance. I'm not sure season wise how busy LA and San Fran are though.

and then your luggage gets lost in these connections or one flight is delayed and you are scr*****..... only in flights connections you lose like 1/2 days.

I flew to Hawaii from Manchester last year and my cases got lost on the return journey! They ended up in London and took 9 days to come back on the hottest week of yhe year in the UK. Not great when all your summer gear is in your missing suitcase. In all the time of me taking open jaw flights and multiple connections my bags have always been lost on the most simple and direct flights! I must be unlucky....

Nice, my kind of holiday. Did San Francisco to San Diego, ending up in Vegas, spending a week there. Fantastic roadtrip, with some amazing sights on the way.....so many brilliant memories, hearst castle, monteray classic car show, muscle beach, etc etc.....with the biggest being a blinding fog near San Simeon which meant staying the night in a motel 6, which we escaped from early morning after a sleepless night worrying what we might have picked up from the bed.
