Monistrol Cava around £8, 2 other bottles at say £4 per bottle, Crackers that will store without issue at say £5 so already at £20 + 10 other items for your additional fiver..........I'd probably say so.

If this had been 20th December this would have sold out without a doubt. We would be buying for our neighbours, the person who feeds the goldfish during vacations, our relatives and buying just for the sake of cheapness. Now we are all sated with Xmas, have no need for hampers and are therefore haranguing each other over the price and contents. Hilarious!

monistrol = £5
white wine = £5
red wine = £5
yule log = £1, at this time of year, they are in every supermarket for pennies
crackers = £1, ditto, just bought 12 for £1.50
So I'd say £25 is a fair price, but not cheap.
I'd happily pay £15 (but no more, £8 is la-la land for cava) for the alcohol, but whether I'd pay £10 for the rest of it, hmm, probably not, because it's basically random Christmas crap that I wouldn't eat and can't be given as a gift as it will be stale by next year

I bought a reduced JL hamper this year, and was pleased with it. However, I agree, using the deals on HUKD I could build a better stocked and priced hamper. If I am organised enough I may do that next year. Now for someone to post a cheap basket deal. :laughing:

I agree entirely! We have for several years received a nice wicker hamper from a dealer who we supply with second hand farm machinery. It is filled with lots of nice food and drink. We kept the larger one and a couple of smaller ones for storing Christmas decorations. Apart from that we end up giving them away. I suppose a good idea to fill for a present at Christmas though. I would rather it came in a cardboard box, but it doesn't have quite the same classy appearance.

Im astounded at the low quality of the items contained in this given that its sold by john lewis. I mean matthew walker xmas pudding, they were selling those in the pound shops!

It may be the reverse. Perhaps pound shops are selling some good quality items? I believe that Matthew Walker make Christmas puds for many different brands including Harrods/Fortnums (not certain) but of course the ingredients would alter according to each brands' specifications. The ones in pound shops may be stock clearance.

Not voting as we are borderline, but this seems typical of certain retailers and manufacturers with grossly inflated RRP à la Thorntons that then apply substantial reductions or 3 for 2 etc. in an attempt to convince consumers they are getting a bargain when in many cases they are still paying over the odds. This case is slightly different as they need to get rid of Xmas stock but the principle remains the same and presumably some people have been rich and/or stupid enough to pay £100 for it, at 25 quid it is probably just about a bargain but I still think people would not be snapping it up without that £100 RRP at the back of their mind.

That is, unfortunately, very true. Outside the stores themselves the customer service is abysmal, and it's frequently necessary to contact the MD to get a sensible response. A lot of their staff (warehouse and call centres in particular) aren't JL employees/partners, and 'never knowingly undersold' is a blatant lie most of the time.
Used to be absolutely impeccable but now a rather blemished retailer which frequently fails to come up to Amazon standards of customer service. You can usually get what you need from them - but you often have to fight hard for it.

At this price these hampers are good value. At full retail or even half price they are a total rip off! Mathew Walker Christmas puddings? Those are the ultimate in cheap quality products! Not much in any of those hampers makes you squeal with delight but at £25 as others have said you could use it as the basis as a nice package to pass on to an elderly relative whose birthday or whatever was some time soon. You can always use a good quality wicker hamper basket as a very attractive "Planter"
Detach the lid and line the basket with any surplus polythene/plastic sheets
Prod a few drainage holes in the lining
Fill with a reliable peat based potting compost
Plant up with any flowers - bulbs - salads - etc. especially for use as an Easter gift
A good quality basket will last for at least 2 years - even outside

It's not a bad hamper, when I made my own a few years ago I struggled to find a decent size basket not outrageously priced. The wine, tea bags, Xmas pud and a few other bits have good expiry dates so they'll be put away with the drinks in the baskets for next year
jimmybo to ShortSally
4 Jan 16#103
Agreed: The tom. pickle and choc. shapes also have a 2017 "best before" date
But I'm very pleased with the quality and attractive appearance of the hamper basket (Mine has just arrived)
It would make a great "pet" basket - and there's no lid to worry about - so for a very functional planter -
This basket is an excellent W18" x D13" X H9"
Save the bubble wrapping to line the basket (Make sure there's a little drainage)
Save the polystyrene packing for drainage "crocks" - for INSIDE the lining (use about half)
Use a good quality multi-purpose peat based compost
Plant up (or sow) flower or salad veg now or later in the year
This basket will easily accommodate 9 bedding geraniums, busy lizzies etc and is deep enough to grow root veg such as carrots parsnips or even early potatoes (Plant 6 tubers per basket)
Of course you can also grow catch crops of lettuce, spring onion, rocket etc.
The basket is also big enough to grow two tomato plants - even on a balcony
