I think this is a good deal for 16GB, seems to be around £60ish elsewhere.

Was just about to post this. Been looking to upgrade for a while so ended up getting it.
For the record, after the discount was applied it was actually £50.00, 1p more than what ebuyer said it was in their email. Shocking eh? :stuck_out_tongue:(_;)
Free Saturday delivery too.

This one was an offer in their email today, I skimmed through the memory on the website, but didn't see any others which you could use the code on, but as there are so many I may be mistaken.

anyone knows which courier they use for Saturday deliveries??

The last few items I have had from them on a Saturday have all been Yodel, but it might depend on where you are in the country.
Is this an all time low price for a 16GB set of DDR3? Seems like it to me.

Nearly, I think Amazon was selling a 16gb kit for £47 a few weeks back. Either way, DDR3 and 4 are getting cheaper. Going to be flaming hot over the next few months

By no means the cheapest though maybe it was a glitch price.
Back in 2013 some of us picked up 8GB DDR3 memory module for £11.22 and I got a few sticks

Good price, and 95% of them probably bought by people who think more RAM is better and in fact the extra RAM will never get utilised.

If they're gamers, less importance for the pagefile drive is a good thing. If you've played Black Ops 3 with 8GB you might know what i mean

that is a sweeping statement. I utilise 12gb+ regularly and can streamline my workflow more with additional memory. Any decent n-core application will scale up with available memory.

I think 16GB will suffice for a gaming PC, mate.
rev6
8 Jan 16#18
It will suffice if they're using a single GPU. With multiple GPU's it's different if you want to prevent games using the pagefile all the time.
malachi
8 Jan 16#19
Even 8gb is enough for gaming, its when you are doing Visualization you need more.
rev6
8 Jan 16#20
4GB is fine you'll just use more pagefile which can drastically effect performance. I mention this all the time. I've seen over 20GB committed with games, multiple GPU's. That could potentially be a serious problem with 8GB memory or even 16GB. Unless you have an extremely quick pagefile drive but it won't be as quick as memory.

no, I am talking about the real speed, the SPD, could be 1333mhz then O.C. to 1866mhz (I call it a cheat) surely 1600mhz I hope for better potentiality to O.C.
rev6
8 Jan 16#22
No XMP but automatically 1866MHz. Can't say for sure but I'm guessing 1600MHz.
I don't know either, I have 2 x 8 GB sticks just some old sticks they are unbuffered and unbranded 1600mhz I hope these new ones will run at 1866 MHz if they do I will let you know on Monday when I try them.

batvink to Springerbhoy
8 Jan 16#41
yes it will help on larger or more complex (layered ) images. but the caveat is that you need to be running a 64-bit version of Windows. if you are still running 32-bit you are limited to about 3.2 GB of usable memory

http://www.futurelooks.com/kingston-hyperx-fury-16gb-1866mhz-ddr3-memory/ the cpu-z in here does say spd 889mhz. so, x2=1778mhz. What a nice surprise, looks like that they are more suitable for some cpu's for the 2011 motherboards as their basic standard goes up to 1866mhz and I always thought the max spd on any ddr3 was 1600mhz. Great

Anyway, looks like the pendulum is switching back to cheap memory. Exciting times. I luv it when that happens.
Next competitive pricepoint for 2x 8GB must be £45 with a few bits in between.
Question for the experts: can I get DDR4 and run it in a DDR3 machine? (sorry if that's stupid lol). I just wondered if DDR4 will take DDR3 in its stride & be backwards compatible but faster, ie I wouldn't expect a Windows 10 program to run in Vista but I might expect a Vista program to run in W10.

I'm afraid not, DDR4 has more pins for a start.

Anyway, since I've got a few experts here, pls give me a succinct summary of where we are now. We run about 16 PCs & laptops in the family, we have a holiday home so 50:50. 5 of us, a few redundant machines that I should sell but can't bring myself to accept nothing much for them.
Some are legacy PCs over 6 YO but they are all now on W10 (I upgraded to W8 for a few £7.50s first then got lucky with the free upgrade to W10) even if a bit pathetic in capability terms. The Vista I didn't upgrade to W8 is on the Insider Prog so also W10.
At Xmas we measured the worst ones (abroad) and on CPU benchmark they varied from about 1000 to 3500 (don't laugh).
Here in UK they are newer but most are 2-3YO i3s on what you'd expect maybe 2000-3000 on CPU Benchmark & I think I've got the best ie i5 on 5000 CPU Bench.
Given that most are now at least 2 YO, should I sell a few on Ebay & just upgrade to next generation? My kids know about CPU Benchmark and seem to think anything less than my 5000 must be rubbish. I could probably sell & upgrade for not too much money as I am not shy of buying refurbished machines.
What do you recommend a family like mine should do?

A good start would be to stop using passmark as a reference.

I'd work from this : Do they all do what you require of them now? If the answer is yes, then don't change them. If the answer is no then change the ones that don't, it's that simple. Simple is good. If you're thinking along the lines of resale value in the future, work on the premise that they won't be worth much and only change when you need to. Resale value is largely irrelevant. I work in IT refurbishment. Second user IT has to be cheap to sell these days. So resale value should not be part of your consideration.

I have 16GB and HWinfo reports that 10GB of virtual memory is committed and 52% physical memory is used (after playing Just cause 3). I've recently upgraded from 8GB to 16GB RAM. The committed virtual memory was the same when I had 8GB RAM.
rev6
8 Jan 16#35
That's right. With 8GB of memory you would be using somewhere around 2GB pagefile. It really depends on the games though and multi-GPU setups make a big difference.
wah0007
8 Jan 16#36
Yeah, there did seem to be a big improvement in stability in games after the RAM upgrade, but the big new Windows 10 update has made it worse with the lag and stuttering.
rev6
8 Jan 16#37
Do you have the pagefile on an SSD?
You could try running games in windowed borderless mode to reduce stuttering.
wah0007
8 Jan 16#38
Yeah, I do have pagefile enabled. Everything was fine until the new Windows update about 2 days ago. It'll probably be fixed in a future update. I've tried bordeless Window but there's a lot of screen tearing, even with vsync on. I'll just give it some time.
rev6
8 Jan 16#39
The pagefile question was unrelated to your problem, just wondered if it was on an SSD.
Are you running an NVIDIA GPU? On AMD, with borderless windowed, v-sync is automatically enabled (by Windows) with triple-buffering too. Makes games very smooth. You would disable in-game v-sync. Forgot to add. Doing this you would have to use RTSS or something similar to limit in-game FPS to 60 for example.
wah0007
8 Jan 16#42
Ah, the pagefile is on an 850 evo SSD.
Yep using a gtx 970 gpu. I'll disable the ingame vsync, limit the fps to 60 and see if it's any better. Thanks
So they should automatically run at 1866 if the system supports that speed.

As fishmaster said. If you feel like they're not able to do what you want, buy new systems. Don't upgrade simply because passmark's numbers aren't as high as you want them to be.
