Not sure if you know, but Enemy Within isn't a separate game, it just adds to the Enemy Unknown game and makes it much better. Fixes various problems, adds loads more maps (maps got very repetitive in EU), adds in a new chunk of storyline, and just generally adds some really cool stuff (turning solider into mechs, genetically modifying your soldiers, etc).
All in all, I would never play the original EU again. I always play it with the EW expansion as it makes the game so much better. So if you do seriously want to play the game, I would have to recommend playing with the EW expansion.

Meh. I guess I'm unexcited by this bundle because I already own most of it.
That said,
- $1 tier is certainly worth it, even for just one of the games in there.
- 2nd tier isn't that great. Civ5 is missing the vital expansions, Starships is crap, and while Civ4 complete is easily worth $6 it's frequently available for less. Enemy Within is a nice freebie I suppose.
- $15 tier is crap.

Well I'm pleasantly surprised by this bundle! When I got the email about it and it said Civilization and XCOM I thought 'Great, a whole bunch of games that I already have and have been bundled before,' but then it turned out that it has Beyond Earth and Starships, both of which I almost bought in the winter sale. It's just a shame that the keys aren't all separate (why, Humble Bundle, why?!) as I like to trade my spares, and also I bet I'm not eligible for the Monthly discount as they already suckered me into paying for Feb in advance to get Alien: Isolation.
I got Civ V from a previous Humble Bundle originally and that included Gods and Kings and Brave New World, so maybe they'll be the 'more games coming soon'. Are Beyond Earth and Starships really that bad? They both appeal to me because they're sci-fi, and Starships seems to be just the spaceship version of Ace Patrol, which I kind of enjoyed, and people seem to be saying that the Rising Tide expansion for Beyond Earth fixes a lot of problems with it, although it's pricey for an expansion and you shouldn't have to pay extra for things that should have been in the game in the first place.
If you bought through Steam you should be able to get a refund for it and then you can rebuy it from the bundle, if that works out cheaper/better for you.
Yeah, it was CVG's Golden Joystick Awards. They've given out free games for voting in them a few times - it was XCOM in 2014 and actually in 2013 it was a choice of Civ V or Mafia II.
And you should definitely get Enemy Within - it's not so much an expansion, it's a whole load of additional features for EU that greatly enhances the game. You wouldn't want to play EU without it once you've got it, although you could always disable it if you wanted to see what the game was originally like.
Beyond Earth is considered the spiritual successor to Alpha Centauri and some of the same people worked on it so I'd say it sounds like your kind of thing. From looking at the reviews on Steam, though, it seems like it's not worth getting without the expansion as that fixes/adds a lot of things. I really wish Alpha Centauri was on Steam though as I'd love to add that to my library! (It is on GoG, in case you didn't already know.)

Abombination
19 Jan 16#26
The keys are bundled together by tier. You claim a Tier 1 game, then you have claimed them all (or wasted the excess keys for games you already own). The same for Tiers 2 & 3. If you only need one game out of each of the 3 tiers, then you will waste all the other keys. If you only need Tier 3 keys, then you don't waste the others.

Played Sid Meiers Alpha Centauri to death as a kid and loved it, for me it had much more depth than say age of empires, is the top tier bundle worth a go with the beyond earth game/expansion?
Regardless I think this is the first bundle where I neither own or have played any of the games so ill probably take the top tier anyway!
jomay
19 Jan 16#32
Yes, Paypal is charging a fee for conversion, somewhere between 1-3% (I'm too lazy to check). It's really not great if you pay for sth. expensive. In this situation that amounts to an outrageous 2p!
Those are DLCs and, for me, are in the DLC section of XCOM: Enemy Unknown. They're not listed separately.

Not had a reply but from looking around for keys elsewhere tier 3 seems a good deal, cheapest I could find elsewhere was $11.78 for beyond earth and the exoplanets expansion. Good chance the cheapest youll find, if not at least the money goes to a good cause. Read a few reviews rating it well and jumped myself, if you like games such as age of empires id imagine this would appeal but haven't played it first hand so I cant say for sure
Illusionary to Meredith2k5
19 Jan 161#43
I wouldn't really say that Age of Empires is a good comparison, to be honest. They're both strategy games, yes, but AoE is real-time and mostly about warfare, whereas Beyond Earth is turn-based and more focused on wider empire-building. There's little better by way of comparison than the earlier Civilization series.
Meredith2k5
19 Jan 16#44
Cant wait to play this now if its anything like Alpha Centauri  Brought it on the hope it would be. Im suprised anyone remembers it too, makes me wonder with its age how much goes towards the original developers if you buy it from GoG. Disappointing that you no longer get keys as I share mine with friends but I can understand why, months after a bundles release ebay prices mysteriously drop :smirk: Wouldnt be so bad but if you consider the charities and devs should be profiting from this and not traders, Im just glad they didn't go the route of creating there own DRM Fair point, I hadnt played either in many many years to be honest and first thing that came to my head  Never liked AoE as much because of this, it always felt like a race to the finish.

Anyone else think X-Com, you know the first one, the one before Terror From the Deep - that it had this real melancholy about it that was incredible. Like when you'd turn up at a farm in the middle of the night and it was so creepy. And at first you'd just get the greys who were pretty poor shots but still good enough to make you feel grim when somebody you'd actually decided to name bit the dust. Then later on you'd get those mind-control guys and the huge saucers that looked like an upturned inflatable padding pools. Mind control man would send one of your guys crazy and his trigger finger would be yammering away sending shots all about the place as he ran in panic... what do you do? Do you just hope he gets his ship to shore and snaps out of it (to avoid my usuals swears) or actually take that awful path where you shoot your own man before that loose cannon takes out a third of your crew? I think most of the atmosphere had to do with the amazingly creepy ambient music and the sound of those scuttling footsteps on metal that you'd hear but didn't see.
I didn't get that so much with the new one.

Beyond Earth is not the spiritual successor to Alpha Centauri it is bascially just Civ V in space. Really it is like they copied Civ V and just re-skinned the world and models. If you have Civ 5 you really dont need this. Given the extra extension packs for Civ 5 it is a far better game than beyond earth.

XCOM: Enemy Unknown and Civ III for $1 is a no brainer if you don't already have them.
If the next tear was with the Civ V expansion packs it also would be a no brainer so it's a shame they're missing. Honestly Civ IV is a kinda redundant offering if Civ V is included (I could never return to playing it).

IMO it's civ5 that is the redundant game. Even with all the expansions, it's still inferior to civ4 in so many ways.

xcom - a game I always wanted to...but never got round to playing (as well as many many others).
Question :
1. So if I'm right from what I've read - Enemy Within actually integrates mixed scattered around into the main single player game.....soooo if have never played the game at all from, you would effectively be better off starting with Enemy Within to get the full length experience, and no point in playing Enemy Unknown standard version?
2. Likewise.....Long War Mod.....is this run as a seperate game....or again another 'alternative' way to start the whole game from the v start? (and still ok for a noob to work through)
Illusionary to Midnight Tboy
24 Jan 161#95
1. Yep, exactly.
2. As a mod, it directly overwrites a number of the game's files, alterting the game experience. I'd recommend not attempting this until you're familiar with the base game (be that EU or EW).
ykhan16
25 Jan 16#96

25 Jan 16#97
When i first got Civ 5 i played it for a couple of weeks then i just gave up as i wasnt enjoying it as much as I did with Civ 4 which just felt a lot richer. I have though recently come back to Civ 5 after getting the expansions and i'm finding it is a much better experience. Yes there are a few things i miss about civ 4- sprawlingg empires and crazy stacks of doom which were fun, though game breaking.
But the new mechanics (unhappiness, 1 unit per square etc) do now feel right and make sense- I couldnt really go back. I wouldnt rate one game higher than the other. In their complete forms they're both amazing. Civ 5 feels alot more slick and realistic- Civ 4, arguably slightly more fun and with more character.

Huge shame - I've already got Civ V plus all of this DLC plus Brave New World from a previous Humble Bundle, and it's hard to justify the cost of the remaining DLC when it works out more expensive than the Complete Edition! So I thought it's about time Humble gave us the rest of the DLC to help us finish our collections.
I've also got all the XCOM stuff already so this bundle has only been worth it for me for the top tier, although apparently Beyond Earth only gets good once you add the Rising Tide expansion so I guess I'll have to get that too! I'd also like Starships but the mixed reviews are preventing me from pulling the trigger on activating the second tier key for myself, considering all the other games will go to waste.

If anyone is reading this you've got until 7pm tonight, 2nd Feb, to get this bundle. If, like me, you're not sure whether it's worth paying more for the second (or third) tiers and your trying to make a decision before the deal ends, you should know that you can apparently increase your purchase any time in the 30 days after the bundle ends. My plan is to buy the $1 tier and then if I enjoy Civ 3 enough I'll buy the next tier. I haven't done this yet but the upgrade link is there so it seems possible.

As always, if anyone has any spare keys, from this or elsewhere, donations for my weekly giveaway are always very welcome.
All in all, I would never play the original EU again. I always play it with the EW expansion as it makes the game so much better. So if you do seriously want to play the game, I would have to recommend playing with the EW expansion.

That said,
- $1 tier is certainly worth it, even for just one of the games in there.
- 2nd tier isn't that great. Civ5 is missing the vital expansions, Starships is crap, and while Civ4 complete is easily worth $6 it's frequently available for less. Enemy Within is a nice freebie I suppose.
- $15 tier is crap.

Some good games in there. Heated!
Though I wonder if I can apply the 10% off the monthly bundle that I've already signed up to...

Just Enemy Within I need, have all the rest or not interested. Haven't even started EU yet, so no rush for me. Heat for humble though.

Ohh well, fantastic value regardless, soo many hours of "one more turn" to be had.

The Pound lost massively in the last month. I know, I'm nitpicking and it's only 6p. But for others it is a 10% increase!
If you're looking for more of challenge whilst waiting for XCOM2 to be released then try out the community Long War mod for XCOM:EU/EW.
Regardless I think this is the first bundle where I neither own or have played any of the games so ill probably take the top tier anyway!
1$ = 0.7068£ at the moment, so a Halifax Clarity card that charges 0% would save you ~2p here.

Heat though...thanks op.
Fair point, I hadnt played either in many many years to be honest and first thing that came to my head  Never liked AoE as much because of this, it always felt like a race to the finish.
I didn't get that so much with the new one.
I actually started out with TFTD - I still remember the demo that I got with a PC Zone cover disc - and the whole X-COM series remains amongst my picks of favourite games to this day.
A return to form, hot!

Heat OP.
They are the only 2 I haven't got and want to play!
Though if i remember correctly, you'll need to do some hacking of ini files to get it running acceptably in 16:9. (By default it only supports 4:3 or 5:4 resolutions)
Maybe you're right in some ways still about the original, but then, I'm not 15 anymore
Heat added
Also I agree that it isn't worth getting Beyond Earth, I bought it on release and played 15 hours then went back to Civ V and haven't touched it since. But for £10.60 I guess it won't hurt to try it!
If you don't have any of the games, probably ok
If the next tear was with the Civ V expansion packs it also would be a no brainer so it's a shame they're missing. Honestly Civ IV is a kinda redundant offering if Civ V is included (I could never return to playing it).
So hot for the bottom tier deal.
IMO it's civ5 that is the redundant game. Even with all the expansions, it's still inferior to civ4 in so many ways.
Though tbh I don't play either anymore; Paradox are the masters of strategy now, with the likes of ck2, eu4, vic2 and soon hoi4. Spoilt for choice!
Question :
(and still ok for a noob to work through)
2. As a mod, it directly overwrites a number of the game's files, alterting the game experience. I'd recommend not attempting this until you're familiar with the base game (be that EU or EW).
Still hot for the $1 tier.
