Not at 1080p any way!

Besides the CPU in this thing is slower than a Pentium series Haswell chip: http://www.cpubenchmark.net/compare.php?cmp[]=2440&cmp[]=2521

Once again people are getting tricked into buying a full size laptop with an ultra-mobile chip designed for an ultraportable. This thing certainly isn't portable at 15.6 inches and nearly 3kg!

Cheeky if the screen was anything like the 15-ak085na it will also be dreadful blacks looked white and the specs need to be looked at careful has hp seem to advertise one thing and do another

is this definitely IPS display? OP mentions it in title but I can't see it mentioned on the website or the spec PDF .

if included I would have expected HP to mention IPS in the spec sheet like they do with this one ?

i just bought the amd version will sell off the original lcd and hard drive and fit full hd ips and 256gb ssd 16gb ram
not bad machine under £300 , not really a amd fan but the a10-8700p is easily matched to a 5200u for a lot less

Unfortunately I don't think so... for instance the one (slightly different model, but still 15-ae0something) reviewed here is definitely not IPS http://www.notebookcheck.net/HP-Envy-15-ae020ng-Notebook-Review.150661.0.html

my guess is this one doesn't have IPS as as spec sheet just says

" 39.6 cm (15.6") diagonal FHD anti-glare WLED-backlit (1920 x 1080) "

whereas the other one I mentioned says
"39.6 cm (15.6") diagonal FHD IPS anti-glare WLED-backlit (1920 x 1080)"

would be great to know, would definitely buy if had IPS

i have the hp envy 13 inch and the fan is on constantly. from the moment it switches on. does anyone else have this issue? i know you can switch the fan off in the boot/bios menu, but is this safe to do? i dont know if this will disable the fan completely, or will it still come on when needed. please advise, thanks

Sounds pretty normal for anything made by HP.

Don't disable the fan, you'll cook it. It's on for a reason - either open it up and clean out all the dust and hair or take it to someone else who can.

a total stupidity fitting a dedicated GPU, charging possibly an extra £150 for that and at the end would not even make a tangible difference with the onboard one, 900 vs 600 passmark points

the machine is brand new, there is no dust. the fan just runs constantly as default. maybe in needs to as the machine is so thin. its very annoying though

You can safely disable the fan. It will still come on when needed. Which in my experience is most of the time anyway.

ok thanks, after disabling it, the machine is silent and the fan has not come on at all when browsing the web on chome and working on a word doc. is this normal?

I've bought HP ENVY 15-ae103na on a black friday deal, and I wouldn't recommend it. The first negative thing is, as it was mentioned before, the fan is always running which gets quite annoying. I've tried turning off the 'fan always on' function in bios, but it doesn't have any affect. Second major drawback is the battery life. One of the selling points to me was the advertised 9.5 hour battery life. Unfortunately it barely holds 4 hours of just web browsing. Funny thing is that when I contacted hp support thinking that I might just received one with a faulty battery, they assured me that it's perfectly normal and the advertised battery life is for idle state... So just to prove a point I tried leaving it on idle, even had WiFi turned off, but the battery only lasted 5.5 hours. So the battery life is well below average. The last negative thing is audio. Though the speakers sound really good for its size, but also they let hissing sound every time there's an audio source. Even if you mute them, the hissing doesn't stop. On the positive side, the built quality is very solid and it feels like a premium laptop, the performance is really good as well. So here's my experience with hp envy, I hope this information was helpful.

Thank you that is helpful. Review here says if you activate "hp cool sense" programme the fan is not noticeable when idle, was this not your experience?
