Great laptop. I've got the version with the i5, 8GB RAM and 256GB SSD. I have no complaints from this laptop and to be honest unless you are doing video editing or anything an i3 will be fine, same for the 4GB RAM.
If anyone has any questions about the laptop let me know

The i3 is the same as a 6200u i5 without the turbo boost although benchmarks are surprisingly similar. Can't believe only 4gb is soldered on. Guess hp wanted to save £5

27 Dec 15#11
i had the i5 version of this aswell
ended up sending mines back because of the backlight bleed issues with them
otherwise couldnt really fault it other than the fan running constantly which you can change in the BIOS and it gets toasty up around the top end of the base

The SSD on this uses M.2 slot. I don't know what generation, however if it's Gen 3 then you can put insanely fast SSDs in this with sequential readwrite of approx 2.5GB/1.5GB and 300K IOPS, not that you really need too
There doesn't appear to be an Ethernet port on this laptop.

I urge people to look properly at what they would use these for, they seem great on paper, but those U processors can be weak at times, for browsing, word processing etc they are brilliant, but any photo or video editing at all and you will suffer. I had a Haswell i7 and they were so bad in lightroom.

There's nowhere near enough RAM in this laptop for any serious photo editing as well and it can't be upgraded.
Exactly. Don't mistake the í3-u for a proper i3. This is a completely different CPU designed for light use only.
That being said, it should be OK for web browsing, simple applications and even Minecraft.

The screen is anti-glare would that mean it is a matte finished ? I have seen the HP brightview screens and those seem very impressive, this doesn't seem to have this feature.

agreed, another obvious case of components being available on the cheap so build a laptop with them, no matter how badly optimised

But you can see why they do it. This way they can have a cheap headline price, get you interested and looking at it, and then hit you with the £699 price tag for the actually useful model.

This is purely a Notebook - there is no optical drive and not sure that you could even add a decent sized HDD,
I5 (5th gen) 8 Gb ram ( don't know if upgradable or soldered - how to find out) ?
Slower due to HDD but good cpu and ram for photo-editing
Uncommon Sense
27 Dec 152#26
I can completely understand people views on the non-up gradable RAM, and this is something I would normally recommend steering clear of; however I would not be avoiding this laptop on this occasion.
Consider the price, and the length of time you want to keep it? Will the 4GB RAM really hamper you in the next to 18-36 months, if you are using this for office work, light gaming (older stuff mainly) and media consumption, and even maybe a little bit of more serious work, editing videos from mobile etc. Then I hardly see this struggling.
Again, price £400, two thirds of the price a lot of people with spend on an iPhone or Galaxy, which often get replaced every two years, almost 45% cheaper than the cheapest 13" Macbook Air, which this is close to in style and build, with slightly lower spec (this also has soldered RAM) and a frankly pants screen in comparison.
I'd say if you are looking for a lightweight, highly portable machine, with a nice screen, and reasonable manufacturer support, then I think you'd be hard pushed to find a better machine for the price.
IMO this is a HOT deal, and I hope that people find what suits them, not others views.

27 Dec 15#27
I think 8GB RAM would make the laptop run more quickly (even 6Gb RAM would be ok I think); 4GB can slow things down if you run a few apps or use lots of tabs in a browser session ; the SSD will reduce this impact though over a 4GB RAM laptop with a normal non-SSD hard disk.

27 Dec 15#30
There's photo editing and there's photo editing. He's talking about 8GB being merely adequate and 16-32GB being preferable. You're only going to need that when doing higher end photo editing with large RAW files and high end software (e.g. Photoshop).

27 Dec 15#31
Which is why I said 'serious' and I was commenting on the fact that some one else mentioned photo editing. I have nothing else to say on photo editing on this laptop, I didn't start the subject myself and have nothing more to say on the matter.

keep your eye on the medion website, they sometimes put a 4210m cpu in a machine for £400-£500, which is a really good processor, downside for me is they never accompany it with fhd screen, my kids have each had a medion for 4 years with a (still good) 2410m cpu, still running fine other than battery obviously wears down

To be fair, I'm in disbelief that people expect at £400 laptop to be a fully capable photo or video editing machine, it's £400! An iPad is £400, do you expect that to do the same?
Treat this for what it is, a thin and light, decently built laptop for office work, light gaming, and media consumption.
I'm slightly annoyed that my everyday car doesn't have the performance of an BMW M3, but is costs less than 1/3, maybe I should not compare these.. hmmmm

In terms of video editing, how would an i7 5500U, 8gb ram, 256gb ssd, 14inch FHD machine suffice? £600
Uncommon Sense
27 Dec 15#40
I can't comment, as I would never consider editing on a laptop. Should you chose to go with it, I'd make sure you start with a minimum of 8GB RAM (expandable to at least 16GB but 32GB preferably), and be looking at nothing less than one of the Core i5 true quad core machines, these are models like i5-6300HQ. The U series are designed for thin/ligh machines, or lower power and have an OEM customisable TDP to suit the chassis needs.
I'd also recommend making sure that you can fit a second hard drive/SSD to the system, as having just a single fast drive will severely limit your mileage from a speed, and longevity point of view, at a push you could look for something that supports USB 3.1 (note 3.1 - not 3.0!) since this has very high bandwidth for externally connected devices, and an external SSD would not be bottle necked.
A few nice things to have also would be Display Port/HDMI, as if you get sick of the small screen you could connect a nice high res monitor up to it, and that changes your whole experience.
In all truth, I suppose it comes down to how serious you are about your hobby, I assume it is a hobby?

Aha yeah it is, to be honest I was in the market for a new laptop anyway (for school purposes, therefore I wanted something portable and as a result most the machines I'm looking at are dual core U processors). I was just interested in a machine that could get me started in video editing, but of course having barely started I don't really want to drop a substantial amount of money into equipment as who knows how long my passion will last lol.
Your advice really did help a lot though so thank you!

Don't understand the discussion on photo-editing..:have used Lightroom 4.3 for 3 years on Intel celeron, with 3gb ram...has worked well....what has not worked well is the Adobe Photoshop - some plugins....so this is not about if 4gb is enuf or not...what's important is an upgradeable feature helps as Rams are getting cheaper by the day

Why is photo editing important for a £400 Ultrabook????
If you do a lot of that, you will need to consider something different than this one.
This is a Ultrabook, U version is very appropriate for what it intended. Battery life per charge is a very important factor for a Ultrabook. It cannot afford to use a M version. I am not saying Envy's battery life is good.
FHD Matt screen and SSD is what I like.

from a review thread: I am not too convinced with this Notebook. I just got one and what i immediately noticed was the fan always being on. You can turn it off by changing the setting in BIOS, however I don't know, whether you are losing your guarantee by doing so (in the case the Notebook suffers from overheating). The second disappointing thing is the display. I ordered a FullHD Version and this panel has a very yellowish tint to it. it is also not very bright at all. I would say about 250 cd/m²
