check out the HP 745, same price but you get £50 cashback and then another easy £60-100 via the HP trade in program (you can buy a cheap tablet on ebay and send it in for £100 cashback).
The 745 has a weaker processor but higher res screen, 3 year warranty, SSD drive and it's 'Elitebook' quality.

Yes, you could get 4GB RAM version for £330, or 8GB for £350.
The 8GB version is the seller upgrade for you, the model does not come with 8GB RAM.
4GB RAM is about £15 on amazon. The original 4GB RAM in the Probook is an expensive model, cost £26 for 4GB on amazon.

If you do not mind refurbished, go for the dell. It has FHD and dedicated graphic card. Although the FHD has low brightness, but it has high contrast, the dedicated graphic card is not powerful, but you cannot expect more for the price.

Do not go for the refurbished Probook 6455b unless you know what you are doing. They are very heavily used.
For what you need, E50, Probook 450, Elitebook 745 are all sufficient.
If you can get the cashbacks for Elitebook 745, for your use I suggest you go for it as it work out only £165 after cashback, and Elitebook is the highest series of HP business laptop, also better screen too. Only let down by its A6 CPU, but sufficient for what you need to use it for. It comes with SSD, so you do not need to upgrade, but you have to be aware that SSD is only 128GB size wether it is going to be a problem for you. If you want it be more capable, later you can buy a 4GB RAM for £14 and upgrade its RAM to 8GB.
If you do not want the hassle to claim cashback and do not have a spare working old device to send to HP, then go for E50 at £290. It got i3, SSD, 8GB RAM. It will be fast without the need to upgrade.

U version is the way forward. Intel has the call.
If need more powerful processor, need to consider i7 HM version etc. i5 M version is still 4th generation, not much more powerful than i5 5th/6th U version.
I actually do not think U version is bad at all for most of people need to use them day-to-day. decent performance for little power consumption, less heat, all important for a laptop's size and its battery.

The Lenovo E50 is a deal I posted. It is very good, business laptop too.
It is i3-4030U, 8GB RAM, 128GB SSD for £290. (the one in the thread is 4GB, you can search in the seller website for 8GB version)
Probook 450 is i5-5200U, 4GB RAM, 500GB HDD for £310.
If you are a person, do not want to open up the computer for upgrades and do not save movies or install games on the laptop or do not mind save movies to an removable hard drive, the Lenovo E50 is good as it comes, and it will be fast just as it comes without upgrades due to its SSD.
But if you want more processing power, and do not mind later upgrade RAM and SSD yourself, then go for Probook 450 G2.
Seriously, if you do not play games on it, do not do photo or video editing, i3-4030U is more than sufficient for normal uses. Lower CPU + SSD is actually very good combination for normal use laptops. They are fast and keep cost down.

Ok thanks I've got in now.
So my dilemma is go for the Probook 450 for total of £310 or the Elitebook 745 for £312 - £50 cashback and possibly £100 trade in taking the total price to £162 but with lesser cpu but better build quality/screen.
Decisions decisions....
huangxq2 to john306
24 Jan 16#61
If you can get Elitebook with all cashback and work out only £162, and you do not need the laptop for CPU intensive tasks, go for it.
For £162 you will not regret the SSD, screen and overall quality. You do need to give away an old working device to HP though.
The A6 is not good, but today's CPU is overpowered for normal tasks anyway. As the Elitebook comes with SSD, the system boot up, normal tasks as office, web browsing and 1080p video will be quick.
If you ever feel slow, upgrade RAM to 8GB. A lot of programmes can take up a lot of RAM and slow down computers. Chrome frequently take up more than 2GB RAM of mine.
Another good thing about it is that it comes with Windows 7 Professional. The windows system will be good, no doubt, much better than windows 8, or possibly windows 10. Windows 10 boot up faster and use less resources, but some people have problems and do not like it.
I have not heard the seller technoWorld, do not know anything about them. Dabs have the Elitebook for £320 who I have used before.

This Probook 450 is £310, not qualify for cashback or trade-up cashback.
The sentence was reply to HP 350 which is £330 and can claim £30 cashback. So the person said same price with cashback as work out £300 after cashback.
Do not go for 250 or 350, when you can buy Probook 450 for the same money, it is better quality.

I thought you want strong CPU. this A6 is not strong, it is weak.
Do not understand your question.
I have done HP trade-up cashback 5 times. Never have a problem.
The Elitebook 745 cost between £199 to £349.99, so it qualify for £100 trade-up cashback.
You need a working pc or laptop, less than 6 years old (if they come with XP, no 6 years restriction), to send to HP, HP will give you the postage label. Power adapter, battery all need to be working and included.
Alternative, you could send a 9 inch or bigger tablet. I found this is the easiest as you only need to make sure working and the size limit. If you do not have one, buy Nook HD+ from CeX for £50.
It sound more complicated than it actually is.
My recently cashback is £300 or £250 per laptop, so actually worth my effort.

The SSD is 128GB.
If want stronger CPU, then go for the Probook 450 with i5-5200U for £310.
Just to point out, on most day-to-day tasks, the bottle neck of a laptop is normally its HDD, not its CPU.
And I agree with you, upgrade HDD to SSD is easier for a laptop compare to upgrade CPU.
Another point, the Elite 745 has a A6, much weaker than i3-4030U. If you want stronger CPU, you do not need to consider it.
huangxq2
24 Jan 16#47
HP Probook is the easiest.
Our 650, there is a button at the back, push it the other way, the whole back cover is ejected. You can upgrade RAM and hard drive.
I upgraded RAM in about 30 of them. take off back cover, take out old RAM, put two new RAMs in, put back cover back. The whole process on each laptop takes less than 10 seconds, I timed it.

How big is the SSD though?.
I'd rather go for a stronger/more powerful CPU than an SSD? (personally speaking ...)
You could always add an SSD over an HDD for sub-£50 later if really necessary?.
Try doing the same for an i5 over that of an i3 instead? (I bet you'll probably pay more than £60 even?, yet alone only £50?). :-)
tallpete33
24 Jan 16#45
You get what you pay for, agreed. I bought this for my daughter as her more expensive HP Pavilion failed after 14 months. The Lenovo is cheap and cheerful but a 2 year warranty from JL sweetens the deal. They are a lot easier to get apart to repair (after the warranty expires obvs) than the HPs/Tosh's also.
huangxq2
24 Jan 16#44
Lenovo B, G, Z series, all not good quality, please do not go for them, especially do not pay £330 for a A8 G50. Bad bad choice.
The price is the same or higher than a business laptop, but you get a not good quality, budget consumer laptop with lower specs.
Go for E series business laptop at least.
For E, i3-4030U, 8GB RAM, SSD is £290,
4GB RAM version is £280.
People who bought it, three confirmed to me that it is good quality. I have seen it in person too.
Or go for Probook 450 with i5-5200U, 4GB RAM, 500GB HDD for £310.
With the prices of those two business laptops, most budget consumer laptops are not good value for money.

huangxq2 to andrewt1
24 Jan 16#43
250, 350 are consumer laptops. (do not know difference between them.)
450, 455, 650 are HP Probooks - business laptop. (450/455 do not have docking ability, 650 have docking port underneath the laptop)
745, 840 are HP Elitebooks - business laptop, Elitebook is the highest. (745 is AMD CPU, 840 is intel)
HP business laptops are good quality, better build, stronger, last longer, good and expensive components used inside. Most time have Windows Professional installed instead of Home version. But the £300 Probook comes with Windows Home edition only. Other components used seems to be the same.

I must admit customer service is poor. I had to return 2 laptops to them and they made me contact HP directly to get it sorted out. Once I got a return letter from HP they did exchange them.
By law if you buy the laptop from Ebuyer then the warranty and legal contract is with the seller to sort out.
Although I did get more help from HP than Ebuyer!
We use Probook 650 at work. I have dealt with them a lot. They are good quality, good build and use good/expensive components too. (They use Samsung RAM 4GB cost £26 on amazon compare to £14 Crucial, they use WD black HDD)
One work colleague once brought a client laptop which is HP 250. I had a look. The quality difference is quite noticeable. I did not like HP 250 for its quality. I would always choose Probook over 250 as their price is not very different, but quality is quite different.

I have a laptop with a screen with this resolution. It's okay for occasional use, but I wouldn't want it for my main Computer. If I needed to compromise to stay within a budget, I'd compromise on the CPU and get a better screen than this one has.

I disagree, a POWERFUL CPU of smaller money is preferable to an all singing all dancing Screen Res that'll SAP-OUT allllll the power from your preferred weaker CPU anyway? (a double whammy the way I see it?).
The Screens on these are more then sufficient for most every day usage?. :-)
I've had an HP 'Consumer' Laptop fail on me, which I paid MORE then 400 notes for about 4.5 years back?, & got LESS then 3 years use out of! (I'd say it was closer to 2 years & 3/4 months usage?), before ..... ruddy waste of money!!!. :-(

In this case, it make complete sense, it is because there is something you may not know.
At Christmas, HP Probook 450 with the same specs was £300. Why go for 250 for the same price?
Now Probook 450 increased to £330. So 250 at £300 seems better deal than before. Although in my opinion, the quality and components difference between 450 and 250 is worth the £30 extra.

So my dilemma is go for the Probook 450 for total of £310 or the Elitebook 745 for £312 - £50 cashback and possibly £100 trade in taking the total price to £162 but with lesser cpu but better build quality/screen.
Decisions decisions....
The sentence was reply to HP 350 which is £330 and can claim £30 cashback. So the person said same price with cashback as work out £300 after cashback.
Do not go for 250 or 350, when you can buy Probook 450 for the same money, it is better quality.
I fancy the Probook 450 but why do you say "Probook 450 for £310 and no need to claim cashback"
I thought this 450 was available for cashback and trade in, or am I reading it wrong?
Thanks
Useful to know too, thanx again, lol. :-)
Thanx for all that. :-)
I think the thread is about HP 250 with i5-5200U at £299. Is it good deal? If not, why and alternative suggestions?
There is nothing restrict to only discussing budget laptops. If business laptops at the same price, of course it is relevant.
Trade up to HP
https://tradeuptohp.com/gb/en/pages/qualifying
For your £100 Trade-In freebie to qualify, you'd need your qualifying Product to cost a minimum of £190! (to get back only £100?), that not cheap maths to me ..... lol. :-)
Those Elitebooks are Business Laptops right?, or ..... :-)
By law if you buy the laptop from Ebuyer then the warranty and legal contract is with the seller to sort out.
Although I did get more help from HP than Ebuyer!

I was talking about Probook 450 at £310. I can guarantee you they are quite different inside and outside.

The Screens on these are more then sufficient for most every day usage?. :-)

I may be wrong?, but ...
These look like the same Animal to me?.
About time HP 'upgraded' to make more of their Laptops sub-£400+ to be MORE 'like-for-like' me thinks?, otherwise what the hell am I wasting all that money for ..... :-(
Rant over, lol. :-)
I may look into your HP 'Business' equivalent you spoke of actually?, as someone also said similar at the back end of last year too upon another HP Laptop Deal on HUKD! (but I was naturally more sceptical at the time?, so ..... hahaha)
But having more than 1 person say similar things has got me thinking to perhaps explore such options, & stuff, & see what gives I guess ..... :-)
Sometimes voting is weird here, but not this time.
I've personally come across myself with some Deals I've Posted in the past too!, so ..... lool.
350 is still a consumer laptop. A lot people said HP laptops are not good based on their experience with their HP consumer laptops. HP business laptops are generally very good quality and use good components too.
Same price with cashback
At Christmas, HP Probook 450 with the same specs was £300. Why go for 250 for the same price?
Now Probook 450 increased to £330. So 250 at £300 seems better deal than before. Although in my opinion, the quality and components difference between 450 and 250 is worth the £30 extra.
1600x900 is better than 1366x768, although not FHD.
The A6 really put people off. I guess that is probably why an Elitebook at this price. 745 only has AMD CPU, not intel.
Elitebook 840 has i3, i5, or i7 versions, but at a lot higher price as what I would expect.

Or go for HP Probook 450 G2 with the same specs for £330. (it was £300, but price increased recently). £30 extra for better business quality laptop + better components.
450 G2 with same specs come down to £310 now. go for 450.

Used to buy from them all the time but whenever I've had faulty items they are pretty brutal to deal with
The 745 has a weaker processor but higher res screen, 3 year warranty, SSD drive and it's 'Elitebook' quality.
I've bought a lot of things from ebuyer over the years ,never needed to send anything back because it was faulty .
