You just need to understand the mechanics of a laptop.
Your netbook likely had a mechanical hard drive. That was your bottleneck...and the reason why it felt slow.
Stick in a cheap SSD, and it would likely have been absolutely fine.

These new 32gb Windows laptops are purely to compete with Chromebooks, which have the same (often only 16gb).
Problem is that Windows 10 just can't run as well on such crappy processors and ram. Still heat for this if only need a word processor, casual browser.
The 32gb memory though makes them faster than if it had a traditional spinning hard drive. The idea is that you just add an sd card or usb stick.

My first thought when I saw this post was that for £100 it can't be bad. However that CPU is dire, looking at cpubenchmark it scores less than 60% of the 2955u, which is used in the better Chromebooks. It even scores lower than the Atoms in the current crop of Windows tablets. I would expect it to be fine for basic word processing, but can imagine that web browsing could be really sluggish.

After speaking to Sainsburys it would seem the deal started on black Friday at £150 however they didn't sell hence lowing the price further. And the laptop to go with it? These are slow as hell, but you get small form factor, great battery life etc. Deals on 15.6in laptops will always be better value but have their own downsides at budget prices (bulky, heavy, poor battery life)
I've spent ages looking for a cheap 13.3in Win10 lappy since xmas. For the avoidance of doubt this is an astonishing deal, only thing that comes close in the acer cloudbook currently 149.99 at currys.
You cannot get a similar laptop, or even one with a faster processor for anywhere near £100 on ebay. I picked up a warehouse deal on amazon for £150 with slightly better processor and ram...but this is an incredible deal if you recognise its shortcomings.

u can't change the ram, as suspected, but u can change the storage. the emmc drive sits in a 2,5" bay intended for normal storage. i found on ebay (but i will keep digging) for 10 pounds the appropiate cable for connecting a 2,5" drive, as the one it has now is specially designed for the emmc drive

there is a couple left in the wigan sainsburys. I picked one up today for my daughter and I'm pretty surprised with what everyone was saying.i was looking at ones around the £400 mark with a i5 processor but didn't want her to break it so I took a stab at this and I'm glad I did. I got it for her to do her home work on and general browsing of the web and for that its perfect. I admit its not lightening fast and the screen isn't amazing but it will do what she will need it for.
I also downloaded bluestacks onto it which allows me to install and play android apps however this will only be used for movie and music apps and it had no issue playing the new james bond movie.
for £100 I really cant grumble and am contemplating to get one for myself to use as a sort of media hub.

I still think if your budget is around £100, then the Asus is still better, it has a better processor (Quad core) and has a MicroSD so you can very easily add more storage and will probably work out cheaper than adding a HDD, plus it has an almost *12 hours* battery life and weighs 1 kilo!

Probably nothing between them in real terms for light duties. Acer has a slightly better processor but a smaller screen (11.6-inch vs 14-inch on the HP). RAM and storage are the same. So I plucked up the courage to open the box and try it - effectively blowing the prospect of any refund from Sainsburys. My conclusion is that this is £100 well spent. If you just want a laptop for internet, watching downloaded videos or catch up TV this is fine. If you want it to do video encoding or heavy weight processing look elsewhere. My desktop PC has a I5 processor with 8 gig RAM and of course that is faster. But for £100 this is a bargain.
Screen is ok - colours not as vibrant as on my monitor or on dearer laptops I have used, but its fine. I like the keyboard and the plastics do not betray the low price paid. Its silent in operation and doent get hot like some laptops I have used. You pays your money and takes your choice but I honestly think this is good value. Look beyond the specs and figure out what you will use it for.

It's £100 though! I just got two to operate some old software record keeping for some weighbridges. New, low spec processor with very little power consumption, no fan required. Adequate, reliable solid state memory. Don't care if they get dusty and bashed about. Tougher than a windows tablet.
Far better option than 'superior' used/refurb stuff that some filthy creature has probably left running for months whilst browsing lord knows what.
Ok for wordprocessing / spreadsheet. Not a great option for much else, bar basic browsing. The screen is disappointing, lacking clarity and a bit washed out, but no worse than tablets at this price.

this laptop, with an entry level 240 gb ssd on it and windows 7 moves like a champ. Good battery life as well. it is way faster than the win 10 + emmc combination it previously had. and the two gigs of ram are more than enough for it, considering that with win 7 pro x64, antivirus, all drivers, and a good amount of software, it only uses less than 1gb at idle. Browsing experience is better too as it can handle a 1080 p video on youtube and several other tabs in the same time on chrome with ease. if u can afford the upgrade go for it. it just requires a 23 pounds adapter u can find on amazon, an ssd ( or an hdd for that matter, but it would be slower and use more battery) and some skill to replace it. good luck

For anyone else wondering which converter to use when replacing the 32gb eMMC storage with an ssd/hdd. This one from Amazon worked fine for me: HP SSD HDD Adapter
Much better now, even using Windows 10. Installing fresh worked fine and activated automatically without using any product keys. Drivers available on HP site as some Windows drivers caused issues - eg. wifi (worked but very limited range).

I picked up a warehouse deal on amazon for £150 with slightly better processor and ram...but this is an incredible deal if you recognise its shortcomings.
just got mine two hours ago, got home, played a bit with that useless win 10, and cracked it oped half a hour later.
u can't change the ram, as suspected, but u can change the storage. the emmc drive sits in a 2,5" bay intended for normal storage. i found on ebay (but i will keep digging) for 10 pounds the appropiate cable for connecting a 2,5" drive, as the one it has now is specially designed for the emmc drive
then i will get a ssd from my old laptop in, after wich i will probably dig hard for some win 7 drivers
it is a good laptop from my point of view
They had one left on the shelf. Not in the usual technology area though, this was in the seasonal offers isle directly opposite where you walk in.

I also downloaded bluestacks onto it which allows me to install and play android apps however this will only be used for movie and music apps and it had no issue playing the new james bond movie.
for £100 I really cant grumble and am contemplating to get one for myself to use as a sort of media hub.
thanks op heat added
plenty of space inside of you want to hack some additional storage inside ..... 2gb memory is fixed though.
I still think if your budget is around £100, then the Asus is still better, it has a better processor (Quad core) and has a MicroSD so you can very easily add more storage and will probably work out cheaper than adding a HDD, plus it has an almost *12 hours* battery life and weighs 1 kilo!
i still have a couple of t410`s to get shot of that wipe the floor with this useless machine for not much more
I did have to install the wireless drivers .... bluetooth worked out of the box not too sure about the camera as I dont have any use for it anyways.
Took me 15 minutes to wort the wireless card.

(It's a £100 laptop...were you expecting top notch performance?!)
Much better now, even using Windows 10. Installing fresh worked fine and activated automatically without using any product keys. Drivers available on HP site as some Windows drivers caused issues - eg. wifi (worked but very limited range).
