I've just returned from Phuket, Ko Samui and Bangkok in December 2015 school holidays with my wife and four kids.
Had a wonderful time, beautiful golden beaches, great food and friendly people, it was safe for us.
If you don't want to see 'Adult themed' nightlife, don't go into those area's. We never saw anything that young kids should not see.
If you want to get murdered go to the United States of America. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-34996604
"Some 13,286 people were killed in the US by firearms in 2015, according to the Gun Violence Archive, and 26,819 people were injured." That's just Gun crime not all murders!
indeed, for most things they want passport as deposit, say no, they will hold it ransome for small reasons ans demand semi doable amount (alot still) just cause you know its a hasslle otherwise, the police normally involved with these and dont give a ****, would not be suprised the slightest if the clinics here pay people to go round the clubs and spike people, or pay the bucket people to tip nasty stuff to get them ill and go to the clinic (cost mate 400£ after one bucket and had to go to one)

I would do a little research if i was you, i can speak as someone who has lived there, Thailand, in paticular the southern islands are about as dangerous as it gets, corruption, crimes against tourists carried out with impunity, if you get in any sort of bother you cannot rely on the police, anyone thinking of going on holiday here think again, research it and do yourself a favour and go somewhere else.
Google is your friend, use it.
I know of many murders/deaths of tourists in southern Thailand this last year.

People were complaining that it was too developed -compared to the last time they were there- when I went there twenty years ago.

that's a harsh generalisation. i did a 12000km 6 week road trip with stopovers in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Las Vegas and Salt Lake city then drove from Miami to Orlando and stayed for 11 nights and I'm still alive. never encountered crime of any nature

Nice place to take your family, went 3 years ago but I got bored as I was by myself. So I was only there for 3 days.

I hated Ko Samui. The areas that I went to were the typically naff, package holiday, tourists traps. I moved around the island and thought how amazing it must have been before all the westerners turned up and ruined it. Didn't even stay a day before I jumped on the next ferry. Each to their own
