as i am writing this, the unit here is currently running next to me as i am in a static caravan whilst doing a self build , it works great as long as u stay on top of cleaning the filter on the back, (lightly hoover), first unit i got did not work, this second unit has been flawless for 12 months, i paid £170, at the time that was cheap. its a brill peice of kit, and like most apliances it needs electric to run, so understand ur bill will be reflected on how much u use it, but it does keep mould at bay and stops things getting ruined for life, more expensive to replace, u will only use tis in the winter months wen u cant open windows ,good find op

And I'm disappointed you doubt the considered and experienced view of a chartered engineer with practical experience and total theoretical knowledge of both at a professional level yet again, even after I have answered before the shortcomnings in your oft quoted report.
I have no interest in any product except as a user.
My view and recommendation for anyone in the uk (where do you live Mr Smith?) with normal dehumidifier requirements is to go for a desiccant type, for reasons of better performance and cheaper running costs (per unit of water removed).
If you live in the rain forest, then a compressor type may be better.

Folks this is not true and I'm disappointed graham is posting this again it's been discussed before..
Running costs of these type of dessicant dehumidifers are higher unless you're using it somewhere cold like an empty property or outbuilding.
They have some advantages in that they tend to be quiet, and they generate heat so if you're just using it in the winter that's handy. Disadvantages are they have a high failure rate, require filter purchases, sometimes put out odd odours and the running costs.
The condensors are more durable - expect it to last many more years, are cheaper to buy and run, and if you need to use it in the summer it doesn't generate heat which could be annoying. On the downside they can be a bit noisier (read reviews first not all are noisy), and are a bit heavier.

It was a lighting deal on prime which ended 3 hrs ago. Only 30% was claimed so I think they may re-advertise them for £99 fairly soon. Keep an eye out.

Had the ioniser version, worked for just over 2 years. Now overheats after 5 minutes and stops, red light comes on.

I would recommend the Meaco 20L dehumidifier. It's a lot more (£235) but very good. It intermittently switches itself on from hibernation mode to sense the air humidity, and if below the set level will go back to sleep. You can therefore effectively leave it on continuously over the winter months. My monthly electricity bill has only gone up around £4/month doing this, and it does dry washing surprisingly effectively (but not quickly!).

Been looking at getting a dehumidifier, but which type are best, desiccant or compressor type? How many would you need for a three bed house, is it one for upstairs hall and one for downstairs?

I read that the compressor types struggle below certain temperatures. These are meant to be more efficient.

Bought one about 3 weeks ago when it was at this price. The windows in our 3 bedrooms used to be covered with condensation in the mornings, not anymore. Superb product.

Mine is 400W on low, and 800W on high. So At 16p/unit, that works out at 6.4p per hour on low and 12.8p/h on high. Remember they cycle on and off, so once the desired humidity is reached they don't cost anything (until they cycle on again).

Does anyone use these for health / skin problems and have you noticed any benefit?? Also, what about electricity costs? Are they expensive to run.

Bought mine 4.5 years ago - the ioniser model for £155, the cheapest at the time. Not a wiff of a problem at all. Outperforms compressor models (that is, removes more water for the same money) in the uk. I have both types. (Compressors may be better in high temp/high humidity countries). Brilliant price.

I do need one but a lot of the reviews on this are mixed - a lot break down quite quickly so think I will look for a different type.

I have the MK5 version which is really good and got it for £129 not too long ago. This version doesn't have the digital dials nor the ioniser but its probably still worth the price and I need another for the garage so I'll give it ago. Heat added.

We had an instantly faulty one.
But you can't beat Amazon for their return policy.
Faultless (unlike my dehumidifier, which doesn't appear to be a common problem with these to be fair).

Personally I think compressor is better for home use. They use less watts.
These are good if your house ambient temps are below 15c .

I've not tried this particular device, but to add for anyone who is thinking of getting one for drying washing indoors I'd highly recommend a dehumidifer. Been amazed how much difference this cheap one I got in the black friday deals has made. Our spare bedroom is the clothes drying room in the winter, it used to always have a dampish smell (although no mould or anything). Running this in there has got rid of it almost completely and fills up every 2 days (its max capacity). No more odd smelling clothes. When it dies I'll definitely be looking for another, higher capacity model like this
