1. Save weight. Use an external drive if you want DVD. They're less than £20.
2. Allows the keyboard to the centred. I prefer that.

A lot of people don't want them these days. It just makes the laptop heavier carrying stuff that you only use one in a while. If you are desperate they aren't exactly expensive to add via USB:

Are you serious?

OP's is way powerful than yours which is why OP's laptop is expensive.

Your one is in a completely different category. What OP's laptop is able to do, your one will not be able to do. So do not compare them on price. It does not make sense at all.

If only they'd put in SSD's on higher end laptops, it seems such a waste of good hardware. Do people really entrust all their data on a 2TB drive in a laptop that could get dropped/stolen etc? I'd rather a 256GB SSD or at least a 120GB OS SSD and a regular drive where the DVD should be
slayermatt to spannerzone
24 Jan 16 #13
Interestingly from the video rmg linked there is an empty m.2 slot if you're willing to factor that in to the price. Only one screw keeping the base together as well which is great.

Also worth noting there is a way to get 10% off if you're student (looks a bit long winded, you call or live chat them to confirm status and then they give you a code) which would kick even more off the price. Tempted to pick one up myself. Looks like a great overall machine.
haritori to spannerzone

One screw removes the bottom panel giving you full access to a 2280 m.2 slot.

Great price. Also read somewhere they put an additional fan in place of a disc drive which is a smart thing to do especially with quad cores.

He meant gaming on low quality settings, I actually think this would work even at medium or even high if you sacrifice some fps.
Nexusfifth
24 Jan 16 #17
Does it support PCiE or is it only SATA M.2?
Nexusfifth
24 Jan 16 #18
I think that 10% is for outlet only, they give you 2/5/8% if you spend more then 400/800/1200£ in the regular store, so you would only get 2% on this machine.

Do you know what rates apple gives and on which price respectively? Seems a shame Dell are quite stingy with their discounts. Macs are generally overpriced but they generally give a much higher discount for students - probably the only thing making me consider a rMBP13 over a Dell XPS 13
Nexusfifth
24 Jan 16 #23
I understand that, I was referring to the additional student discount which dell offers via code and someone suggested combining the codes or something.
Nexusfifth
24 Jan 16 #24
Apple gives 15% I believe.

If you are looking for XPS13 and are not bothered with a refurb/return, check Dell outlet once in a while, last week they had xps13's from 700£ onwards plus extra 10% student discount. You still get a full warranty and can return if you don't like how it looks like, most of them are returns and are virtually new.

Also ebay has a good deal on xps 13 from US once in a while, a week or so ago there were a dozen going for about 500£ new (including import charges and delivery) (they were first gen) they went before I decided whether to buy an import or not...

I would personally go for dell especially as I believe their machines currently are better than macbook pros, that screen is really awesome and the laptop is super small and portable.

people who a dissing the laptop coz of the 960m:

I can run fallout 4 on high preset with some things on ultra at 35-40 fps.. which is more than adequate! Yes it doesn't compare to PC GPUs blah blah blah but you have to accept it for what it is...
bashi
25 Jan 16 #26
How do you get the 10% student discount off Dell Outlet? I have a NUS card.
Nexusfifth
25 Jan 16 #28
You need to talk to a representative on the chat, he will ask you for some details to verify you are a student. He asked me my uni email and sent me the code to it so I am not sure if having nus card is enough (you need .ac.uk email address), but it is worth a try I guess, good luck.

Many reviews stating this has a very poor display unless you get lucky and they place an LG one in.

I have been looking at this laptop with interest over this but the poor display would put me off as I am moving from an Alienware to something a bit cheaper.

Anyone have one and can comment on screen dimness?
nomnomnomnom to Nutkin
25 Jan 16 #36
Yeah, this was covered quite a lot in the last thread. In short: loads of the reviews are for the old model, not the new one. I have one and no issues with screen quality - It's lovely. See this thread: http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/dell-inspiron-15-7000-gaming-laptop-saveonlaptops-2354773?p=26863418

Multiple HUKD members and the dell reviews all praise screen quality. I'm at a loss where these screen comments come from, because as far as I can tell, it's a myth. It must be the old Dell Inspiron 15 (which would make sense - a few reviews flag this), but on the new one? Can't see much evidence of the issue, and I own one!

Dell's warranty is very poor. I had a xps 15 refurb, turned up and looked about 10 years old, was actually 2 years old having checked the service code. After a couple of months of use, with only a couple of Adobe programmes installed. It became so slow and sometimes took 10 mins to switch off, despite regular updates. I contacted dell a number of times through their system for warranty issues without any luck. Called them up and was told it was a software issue and not a hardware issue which was rubbish as I have two laptops running the same software. They wanted to charge me £65 to have someone talk through over the phone on how to format the hard drive and delete everything. I kicked up, they said that would be free, but refused to have the laptop in for an engineer to look at. Cost £660, utter junk. I had many more conversations/chats without luck, even though the machine started playing up not long after getting it. I contacted AMEX who refunded me. Ended up getting a MacBook, via student discount for £1000, similar spec except for the screen which is lower res. Worth spending the extra. I will never buy a DELL again. Shocking service.
ggilfedder to paul.jacobs
25 Jan 16 #32
What you described is a software issue though... Dell gave the correct response. Not their fault you downloaded and installed something malicious or know how to maintain a computer. A mac is a lot easier to maintain if you don' have a lot of common sense which the windows operating system does require which explains your more enjoyable experience. That is not dells fault though is it.
noizemaker to paul.jacobs
25 Jan 16 2 #33
I had another experience with Dell! Bought xps 12 2-in-1 about two and a half years ago with 1 year warranty. Three months ago motherboard died (most likely). I called them and guess what. They collected it in three days, replaced motherboard, extension board and SSD for free. In a week of time I got my "new" laptop ready at home! All that for free and out of warranty! Also I extended my warranty for £49 a year.

Can someone explain whats good about this except the graphics?

The one suggested for £599 http://m.dell.com/mt/www.dell.com/uk/p/inspiron-15-5559-laptop/pd?oc=cn55908&model_id=inspiron-15-5559-laptop also has a latest i7, AND double the RAM AND double the HD capacity.
nomnomnomnom
25 Jan 16 1 #41
You're comparing a top end i7 (HQ) to a low power one (U). The difference in performance is vast : http://www.cpubenchmark.net/compare.php?cmp[]=2607&cmp[]=2586

2 extra cores, and around double the performance.

Only the 6820HQ and 6920HQ are above this chip in performance and you'll pay a massive premium for them. This is quite simply the best 'real full fat' i7 for the sub £1k range. Loads of performance for the price. Linked with a 960M, you have a nice machine that's quite light and packs a punch.
pazuzu17
25 Jan 16 #42
Definitely not. I think £200 is the max I would pay for ANY phone - both now and in the future. I currently am using a Nexus 5 which I purchased used (but great condition) via eBay, £150(ish). Such a great phone. Understated, coupled with good hardware and pure Android.

Sorry to be dim, could you explain more. If this is fitted could you use the SSD for everyday use and still store stuff on the 1TB drive and get the best of both worlds, fast boot and plenty of storage?
haritori
25 Jan 16 #48
Exactly!
nomnomnomnom
25 Jan 16 #49
Well it depends on what your normal tasks are.

If it's things like browsing, Word, Excel, Skype and so on, then the U series is perfectly capable. It's still reasonably good for a dual core chip, and will give you better battery life due to being lower wattage.

Lol-ing at some who fall for the i7 badge engineering trick done by Intel. Stop posting laptops that have a pathetic dual core processor and comparing them to this one.

This laptop is a TRUE i7 (e.g Quad core + Hyperthreading) with a semi-decent graphics chip as well.
This laptop will also be good for many years (unlike the low end ones that people will feel the need to upgrade in 2-4 years).
When i buy a laptop, i always go for the top end ones because they last far longer before they need to be upgraded.
Jakkal23

I'm after the UHD version with 8gb ram. £850 on Dells site brings it down to £790, which is same price as a company on ebay. Even though the company is closed till Monday, it would still be quicker from them.
Dell said they had no more 10% off vouchers available.

Does it usually take 10 days from ordering from Dell to get it?

Sorry, I'm not experienced when it comes to this stuff. so:
Unscrew base plate with one screw
Fit drive as you would with an extra stick of memory

How do I switch bios?
How do I enable old drive in disk management? Isn't it already enabled?
Sorry to seem dim.

It isn't stuck down, the keys along the top are just configured to be useful function keys rather than the old F keys we all know and love. My only (slight) annoyance at this is F5 refreshing, the volume/brightness/media keys are very useful.

I have this laptop and have been very impressed with it performance wise, absolute bargain IMO.

BTW: It DOES have a num pad. I'm sure there is some hot deals on at SpecSavers...The M2 slot is SATA only, not PCIe. No big deal, the difference in real world use between ~500MB/s and ~2GB/s are minimal - benchmarks not withstanding.
