Buying a laptop has become the most stressful thing i have done in a while,
When buying a premium laptop trying to purchase something with everything just right i near impossible!
Its like
HP Spectre x360, Amazing screen, great keyboard and track-pad, Beautiful Design, Long Battery
Terrible Sound
Dell XPS 13, Amazing Screen, Great Keyboard, Beautiful Deisgn, Long Battery, Great Sound,
Terrible Track-pad.
do then you look around a little, think maybe ill upgrade the HDD to SSD on something cheaper.. but then it gets worse
HP Envy range full of problems
Inspiron range full of problems
Lenevo Yoga range full of problems
cant trust reviews, can test anything because PC world only like to stock em high sell em cheap laptops..
Id go for Apple but the premium on an extra 128GB of SSD is just stupid.
OMG!

GPU OK CPU Not really an i7 only dual core low voltage rubbish. About the same as my 3 year old i5

Oh I agree, but at least a mid range GPU can be helpful if you are doing video editing, rendering, modelling, etc and even just to make it easier if running multi screen setups too.
All depends on what you want it for, like I wouldn't be expecting to see a decent GPU with a U processor...leave that for the HQs.

I went through exactly the same a few months ago. In the end via a friendly students help I managed to order a Macbook Pro Retina via the Apple Higher education store and got a discount of almost 15% over the Apple retail store price with 3yrs warranty included on HES purchases as well. I went for the 256gb as I wanted to run a couple of virtual machines on the Macbook but as you say that does add quite a premium to the cost.
I did manage to test all the comparable options due to friendly work colleagues who had the models I was interested in. I'd say the Dell XPS13 was the closest in quality to the Macbook pro...The new Black and Copper x360 Spectre is also very nice however the trackpad was a little disappointing. HP have also recently released a new aluminium Envy model that is with taking a look at as the pricing is very keen although battery life is a little disappointing on it.
Personally I think the one with least compromise is the Macbook Pro but unfortunately the compromise on this is the cost...everything else is pretty much perfect if your budget can stretch. Great sound, great screen, great keyboard and trackpad, great battery life, brilliant build quality and you also get the flexibility of running both OSX and Windows.
I agree though...finding the right ultrabook is tricky...

Moore's law states that the number of transistors in an integrated circuit doubles approximately every two years. It's a common misconception that it refers to processing power.

For 150 more you get a quad core i7, way better graphics card and better guarantee and d battery. Sorry think the new 15-7000 is a better deal.
I think dell outlet prices were good a few years ago, not so much these days.

I am seriously considering it, would 128GB be enough for someone using one mainly for internet, photo editing (use external for photo storage but also installing bootcamp, to use some windows stuff?
iDealYou
17 Jan 16#21
Can't you just swap out the 128GB for a bigger capacity?
bbbazman
17 Jan 16#22
I have 512, I do a lot of video editing. I use ext drives too. My wife has 256, she doesn't edit but she has more than half free and she has a lot of MP4 files.
I'd respectfully suggest that 128 'would do' and you could enhance with SD storage or an ext drive. I bought a 200GB SANDISK ultra SD card for £60 on a lightning deal recently (for another purpose), that's got to be much more cost effective than paying apple prices for increased storage. I think that'd be fine working off to do photo editing and it's convenient in terms of portability.
Remember to back up regularly to an external drive with Time-machine.
Of course, if you have some spare santa money, I'd go for the largest drive that funds permit for convenience, albeit the apple premium cost does hurt, and being a tight-fisted scotsman, :man: I'd be looking for a cheaper solution.

I spent about 2 months checking dell outlet every Tuesday for a deal. None of them were worth it imo. But something only a hundred or so less than the latest model with way better everything. Just not worth it.

Yeah I am pretty much think im going to switch to the dark side lol, I get NUS discount so i get 15% but its still 1049 for the 256gb model.. and i am right in thinking you get 3 years free parts and labour under HE agreements?
haritori
17 Jan 16#28
if you google it there are mass reports of problems with the track pad.
Uridium
17 Jan 161#29
Correct yes, 1yr phone support and 3yrs parts and labour hardware with HES purchases.
I think that's about how much i paid for my 256gb model.
Don't regret it though and on the plus side should you wish to upgrade or change at a later date depreciation on a Macbook Pro Retina is only around 10% per year.

Good choice, ignoring all the Apple hate can be difficult (as can spending all that cash) but despite Dell and HP's best efforts the MBPr is still the best ultrabook....
The XPS and Spectre are both good but still not quite there with the MBPr yet.

Here's my new to Macbook ownership top tips...
If you plan to install windows I wouldn't bother with bootcamp (even though it's free) Parallels or VMWare fusion can be picked up for around £60 and allow you to run Windows as a virtual machine, simple swipe to the right with your touchpad and you have your Windows desktop. I prefer Parallels (Despite working with VMWare servers in my day job).
an SDCard and hidden adaptor is also a useful addon as you can easily add another 128Gb of local storage and point your Time machine backup to it
haritori
19 Jan 16#44
Thanks, I was looking at parallels which seems the better option, and the jetdrive lites seem ok too.

19 Jan 16#45
Have you tried VirtualBox on OSX as a host? I use it on a Windows host and find it very good for a free product.
Must admit I haven't tried it. I tried parallels and Fusion in trial mode and found I preferred parallels and as luck would have it picked up a 10 app bundle on cultofmac.com for £30 that included Parallels.

links to the Dell site don't really work. Your best bet is to search for the model on the outlet site. If you still can't find it, it probably means it's sold out.
Well then get one without a gpu and save on weight cost and battery life
haritori
28 Jan 16#55
Thanks, for that, also as I am buying from the EDUCATION store, Parallels is only £30.00 going to buy on Monday getting the 256GB version and Parallels for £1060.00. excited now cant wait
