Yes, he wouldn't need much for 'general entertainment', so I told him what the benefits would be in terms of gaming. What I don't know is why you would ask me that...

If I didn't fiddle with it then my 2550K would need upgrading as it just wouldn't be quick enough. But an extra 30% performance from an extra £30 investment 4 years ago means I can use my money elsewhere.

I mean which software to need that hardware.

My PC's have lasted much longer after not fiddling with things like that.

It's only fine if you have an SSD with a pagefile. There's many games out today that use more than 8GB commit charge with system included. Also if you're running a high VRAM card, that can increase virtual address space usage. Multi-GPU users will need more than 8GB too unless they want to be entirely reliant on the pagefile. I've seen COD BO3 use over 20GB commit charge with 2 290x's (4GB VRAM) at 1920x1080 in crossfire.

haha, u wont get any performance boost for any games currently out (maybe Batman Arkham Knight lol). 8GB is fine for now and you can always upgrade. only use the same capacity as what you currently run and you will be fine

It's not really free performance as mobo and cpu is more expensive

Who grows out of free performance?

Well u could buy a single 8gb stick for £35 and I bought four so yeah not a great deal. Also I need the extra ram for work and it make a huge difference for me but if gaming then u only need 16gb for now

I remember being a teenager fascinated with overclocking and all of that. You'll soon grow out of it!

Do you even know what ram does?

I have not voted but I don't think it's a deal as I bought corsair 4x8gb 2666mhz ddr4 kits that overclock to 3000mhz for £140 and that was 6 months ago

How is that a good comparison? You paid £100+ just to do that, and I bet you don't even notice the difference!

I'm not sure if I should get 8gb or go for 16gb which could be had for around £70-80 on Amazon... Would it be possible to add another set of 2x4gb later on as it seems rather likely that ddr4 prices will drop in the future? Also not sure if going for 2400 or 2600 Mhz would be worth it. I'm putting together a i5 skylake rig used for gaming and general entertainment stuff.

You can add ram very easily later. After watching some videos on youtube comparing 8gb vs 16gb, there is hardly any difference whatsoever... generally 0 - 4 Fps increase.

Surely there is only 2 worth considering? 6700k is you want full overclocking with multipliers and c-states or the 6700 if you want limited overclocking (though more than enough) and to save money.
