I have indeed. They're marked as 'OEM' by Western Digital and you can't register the drives seperately (I tried that and e-mailed support to see if I could). You register the enclosure, if a drive fails you just send that drive back for replacement.

I have a question which might be silly but would help me a lot.
I would like to get the ex2 NAS with 2*4TB drives inside.
Now instead of paying 400£ they are asking (plus it is out of stock) my idea was to pick up a my book duo 8TB for 200£ and an empty ex2 for 85£ and simply moving the drives from one to the other. This costs me 285£ and leaves me with an empty My Book Duo enclosure.
Now what I am interested in is whether the current deals on the Toshiba E300 drives Toshiba E300 3TB drive 66£
Would 2 of these work in a my book duo? And if yes with Raid 1 setup? As then I could gift/sell the my book duo rather than having an empty enclosure. Also another alternative is to pick up 2 WD red 3TB drive from say amazon and put those in wd my book duo, but I am interested whether the drives need to have some sort of software support to work in My book Duo.
Any help would be much appreciated as I would hate to throw away a good Raid 1 capable external enclosure and it might bring my price even more down.

I'm sort of shocked this has become hot all of sudden, for days it bumbled round at 80degrees !
Scorpion
29 Jan 161#39
I think this will work yes, however a word of caution!
The My Book Duo uses hardware encryption, so when you boot it up the chip inside the enclosure writes info the HDDs which then means that to access the content on the discs you need the enclosure. This is bad because should the enclosure fail there is no method for getting your data off the discs, the best you could do is format them. For that very reason my enclosure is boxed up and will probably never see service. If you're happy to take that risk with your data, then it should be fine though.
HTH

29 Jan 16#40
Thank you very much for your advice.
And I would presume buying a second enclosure won't solve this issue? But if I am not missing something this is a problem with the My Book Duo to start with (regardless of the drives in it) and is an absolutely massive issue as I guess most people would buy 2 bay especially to safeguard data if one of the disks fail. I suppose I can only hope that the chance of enclosure failing is low compared to the hdd's, but still this is a major issue. So there is no way to turn off encryption?
Scorpion
29 Jan 161#41
@Nexusfifth
Buying a second enclosure won't help no, as the hardware encryption key used on this is different to that of enclosure #1. (WD will not release details of the keys for obvious reasons!)
You're correct in deducing that it's a major issue, there are loads of threads about it on the WD forum. There is no way you can turn the encryption off on that model.
My advice would be to never buy a hard drive enclosure (that you plan to use!) which enforces use of hardware encryption. The encryption can be done using software if that's what someone wants, so buy an enclosure without this if you plan on using the enclosure. To be fair to WD they do make it pretty obvious which products have hardware encryption, and this isn't purely a WD thing, other storage manufacturers do the same thing.
For me buying a My Book Duo made perfect sense as I was purely interested in the very very cheap WD Red drives inside it.
Nexusfifth to Scorpion
29 Jan 16#42
I really appreciate the information.
My primary interest is of course the wd reds inside, I just thought that the enclosure, being dual bay as it is might be worth something, as a gift or to sell on. My primary storage is going to be the ex2 NAS. (Do you know if the ex2 also does this? google suggests it has some kind of optional encryption but I can't really find hardware encryption details)
And I will probably just sell the my book duo then, with or without hard drives, I don't need it and I don't want to be a culprit of someone losing 3TB of data in RAID1...
Out of interest can you give me a link to the forum discussions you mentioned?

30 Jan 16#44
Not really worked out that great for me IMO.
You're better off using the mailing list 10% off and WDSTORECPN as these will stack and the code doesn't stack on student store. 4TB WD Red £115.99 in this method.
Shame I'm after 3TBs, can't use the code as it's under 100, amazon beats it at 83 against 89 and if I buy two and use the code it still only makes them 84.

4 Feb 16#49
Was about to push the button on the mybook duo 8tb but the hardware encryption is a deal breaker for me. If the enclosure fails then you have no way of getting your data off either drive which defeats the point of the drives being mirrored for security. WD's answer to this - you should always backup your duo to another backup drive!! Trying to justify the purchase of 2x Hitachi drives now with a synergy enclosure instead but would have jumped at the WD if you could turn off encryption.
Scorpion to redmoorphil
8 Feb 16#52
The point of this deal is more that the WD Reds within the My Book Duo's are vastly lower (in some cases) than buying the drives stand alone. You could buy a my cloud mirror with 8TB for £235 or so, which would offer the same sort of functionality (and then some!) but without the encryption of the my book duo. For a like for like Synology setup you're looking at £350 easily.

£206.10 each if you want them with a 3 year warranty.
If you use my MyBook Duo trick (buy one of those which contains two WD Reds with a 2 year warranty) then it costs £265.99, so each drive would cost you £132.99 which in my book is a bargain given these are usually more like £215 each.
