A smartphone doesn't compare to this in any way. I've got the LG G4 and it's the best camera I've seen on a phone but it's stil nowhere near my Canon 70D

Price looks very good, not much spec difference to the previous model 650d which is currently £260 on Amazon. I also have a 400d and been looking to upgrade. The 700d has video which is another tempting option to play with... Smartphones are way more practical and give great results day to day straight from your pocket. DSLR are good if you have an interest and want to put effort into getting some amazing shots, the best of which will blow the smartphone away..... if you put the effort in first! Just my view!

I used to own a 400d but sold it as using my Smartphone camera was so much easier from a practicality point of view. However after recently looking at some pictures I took with the 400d nine years ago I'm still amazed by the clarity and quality of a base spec SLR. Very tempted by this.

£260 for a used 650D or £220 for a new 700D is a bit of a no-brainer though, if you don't mind the higher initial expense. Canon are great for cashback though, I've claimed on it last year and this year and both were paid without any issues.

How does this compare to the 1200d? I'm looking to get a camera and need a macro lens (100mm) I believe and not sure what to go for. I've also been advised to go for a ring flash too.

Sigma 105mm f/2.8 EX DG OS HSM is what you want for macro.
The biggest feature that will help with macro photography is the articulating screen, which will make composition easier. In terms of image quality, there won't be a huge difference.

Better. I have the 700D. Still not full frame and I think it may have a similar sensor to the 1200D, but it has more features and a slightly bigger/sturdier body. 1200D is an entry level camera. The 700D is the next notch up.

27 Dec 151#12
Has quite a few extra features, such as articulated rear touch screen (also higher resolution), higher ISO settings, more cross-type focusing points, slightly wider viewfinder coverage. Whether these are worth £40 to you, only you can judge.
Tempted to get this with a budget 10-18mm wide zoom. Total price will still be less than wide zoom for my Fuji.

If you are comparing quality of this with a smartphone then you need a "smarter" user  but in terms of convenience then it's another discussion

It's actually dental photography. Clinical images.
Currently have a old camera and struggling with the focal distance.
John Lewis have a few offers on the 1200d. And have a sigma 70-300mm lens but don't think that's good enough.
Ps I'm a noob as you may realise from the comments above so forgive any incorrect terminology.!
GussieG
27 Dec 15#22
In which case the articulating screen is no real benefit. I get good results with an old Canon 400d, 100mm Canon macro lens and ringflash as given in the eBay link previously. Your 70-300mm lens won't give you great results. Get the Sigma 105mm as recommended - gives you a decent working distance away from the patient, and can be used for anything from close-ups of individual teeth to full face/profile shots.

Can get the body only from Amazon for £199, with £20 Canon cashback to give £179. The John Lewis deal for camera plus 18-55 IS lens for £269.99 is pretty good, but depends on whether you actually want/need a standard lens.
I already have this might get this as I want another body saves changing lenses while on a shoot. Although may help for my dual view video setup. I was thinking of getting couple of LUMIX 4K cameras though for video. Any suggestions between them for YouTube video

Weird that you can get to the canon shop page selling the camera from the cashback page yet there is no mention of it already including the cashback. I think it must include it though as other models would be vastly underpriced if you could get the hundred pound cashback on top.
Ah, looking again they must include the cashback taken off as the reductions on each model match up with the cashback amounts available. Shame.
Mada06
27 Dec 151#34
I think it would be very misleading if the canon website included the cashback but didn't explicitly mention it. It did cross my mind though. There is a huge jump from the 700d to 750d and normally manufacturers stores aren't as competitive as independents.

those like me who missed this deal, may get the 750D through lightning deal for 419 pounds. Then claim the double cashback as amazon is on the list of authorised retailers, bringing down the price to 319 pounds. stock is running low fast, be quick. Cheers

Good price, but I have to agree with the other poster here: this is old, so-so tech. Canon's lukewarm dynamic range and low-light performance, and the prevalent moire effect, would steer me clear of this.
Canons always seem like a great choice, then you look deeper and find them lacking.

Even so, the body has more features than equivalently prices DSLRs: touchscreen, exposure simluation in live view, manual controls during video and access to Magic Lantern.
It's just a shame that all these nice features can't be used with the phase detect AF and also the viewfinder is small

Definitely didn't say that cashback is applied at checkout for this one. It does say it for other items though. If they don't do the cashback, I'm returning mine. It would be daft of them as they are grossly I competitively priced without the cashback. Currys and JL have this with the lens for 458 so 100 off would be 358 with the lens. Much better than 319 without the lens. I tried to call their claim hotline but closed until Monday. I had already submitted my claim online. Again, on their Winter Cashback site where you claim, there is no mention in t&c's about cashback already being including at checkout. It's now OOS online but will be back in stock if they get a load of returns.

I've sent mine back for a refund as I took advantage of the Costco 750d kit for 455 and have claimed 100 back from canon making the 750d with lens 355 which is a much better deal. The 750d is worth that little bit extra as it's current tech.
donslibi
1 Jan 16#64
355 with lens is very good for the 750d. I'm not a Costco member and it may depend on local stock. Still prefer 219 body only 700d of the cashback works. I've been advised by Canon customer service to call the cashback hotline on Monday as it may still be honoured due to the misleading website. If not, they will do a full refund with free return postage.

fair play. I managed to get a friend to take me as a guest. Good luck with canon. I'm sure they will do the right thing
Called them the guy was lying they sold loads this morning so just went out of stock. I told him it's been out of stock for few days actually. Then he was like oh we sold them all at xmas as price was good. They will get more stock but not at that price. To me seems like they only did it to get some free advertisement. I wouldn't be buying from them even if stock returns.
