This is something I don't need, but because I grew up watching the dukes of hazard I think I need one

These are brilliant for talking to the wife around the house without actually having to face each other

Rather than simply talking down to someone, why not try and educate?
So, they were actually kind of right, but for the wrong reason. Perhaps next time, try not to be such an ar$e and instead be helpful.

I got these last year on a Lightening Deal. The quotes range is a bit flattering, but great fun, reliability and no issues in 12 months.

Ah, interesting.
Can others listen in to the conversation or do these have some kind of digital security?
RedDemonic

no security, anyone can listen if you have the correct channel.

Got a set of these for snowboarding.... Class buy in all fairness. Batteries last ages and the range was perfect over the slopes and resort.

There are no distance related regulations I the UK (how would you enforce them anyway). You clearly have no idea what you are talking about.

We once picked up the SportsDirect employees chatter, as we were talking, they were asking who we were and were trying to reaffirm sizes etc?!?!

He's sort of right isn't he?? I thought that personal radios didn't have to be licenced if they are under 0.5W which limits the range. Remember, the ability to enforce a law has never been a key criteria of setting said law.

Anyone remember "push to talk" on mobile phones. Never took off in this country.

It isn't, it's just that any over 0.5w need to be licensed

PMR446 (licence free radios, that these are) have a maximum transmission power of 500mW which is a range of 10km in perfect conditions, so it's this, not the actual distance.

no chance of getting 10km unless you are in a field 10km long.
Expect 2km max in a built up area.

Official line would probably be because of the frequency they use, don't forget that mobile operators and digital TV providers have to pay for a licence to use their frequencies too. In reality, its just another tax!!

By all accounts it's a good set  I have a similar set and they are fine, sure it's not going to work from one end of a shopping mall to the next, but I got about a mile out of mine and that's across a fair few streets. For some reason they seem to bring out the kid in me, crrrrrrch, over!!!
