I was looking for a phone I could collect from a store nearby (Argos, Currys, CPW) when I noticed the Asus Zenfone 5 4G is only £99.99 at Currys. It is available for Pay & Collect at my local in Derby, but may be available for Reserve & Collect at other stores.

Specifications look decent with only battery life (~1 day) being a bit low. I did lots of reading online of reviews and people seem generally very happy with this phone. It should be a nice upgrade from my (now faulty) Sony Xperia E4G. One of the reviews I saw said the Zenfone 5 LTE is $250, so can't be bad for under £100!

Mine is due for collection from store on Monday. Hope this helps someone looking for a decent screen-sized phone that won't break the bank.

depends if you need 4G. that affects the internet speed, not the general phone speed. my contact is 4g so I wanted to get a 4G phone, but if you don't, 55 is well worth it!

I can pick up a zenfone 5 the non lte verion for £55 is is worth it? or should I go for the p8 lite. the z5 is nice but for the same price as the p8 lite which has much better camera.

If its also got 2GB RAM and 16GB internal memory then I'd very highly recommend the ZenFone. 55 is a steal

I have been using my Zenfone 5 since I picked it up from Curry's on Monday and have to say I'm very impressed. Much smoother experience and vastly better camera than my Sony Xperia E4G. I also have an iPhone 6 (work) and this is about on par in terms of general user experience (of course the camera can't be compared to the iPhone). I bought a glass screen protector and transparent case (I can provide links if people are interested as both turned out to be very good).

I am happy with KitKat as I preferred it to Lollipop on my previous device anyway, but for those who want to change the OS, here are the links for upgrading to Lollipop (via ASUS firmware) and to Marshmellow (via ROM):

And the simple ASUS firmware update procedure (as you may want to upgrade versions within KitKat and/or to Lollipop). My current firmware version is from July 2014 but the one I'm about to install is July 2015 (still KitKat but with minor improvements):

Can anyone recommend a budget android smartphone for my mate? Sub-£120 - he is coming from a dumb phone. I have little experience with low end android devices as I normally go for something higher end.

Umi iron pro and umi rome both are decent enough and within his budget. Both have 3gb RAM, but the umi iron has a better camera sensor and many security features. However the Rome is significantly cheaper. Can be bought for low £70s from banggood.com and geekbuying.com and from banggood even less after cashback if clicking through from topcashback or quidco. Both phones can be bought from Amazon too, but will cost more than if bought from chinese sites. However, even with the more expensive Amazon prices, the Rome will still be within your friend's budget. Hope this helps.

I was looking at that too, did a comparison (decided to hold off on both but that's for other reasons). The Huawei is a later phone, looks marginally better where the stats come in (battery very slightly better, offers slightly better stats and something about it being made a year later makes me think it's more likely to get future updates than the Asus). I've not been impressed with neither offering a removable/replaceable battery though as my experience of smartphones is that the battery is one of the first things to die out and need to be replaced or updated.

All mobile phone threads are full of comments criticizing battery life. I bought my sister a Zenfone 5 and she's not complained about the battery life once in 6 months. The phone itself has a really decent display, and is quick. Obviously it's not going to compare with an S6 or an Iphone 6 but neither is the price. It's a great phone for the money, and most people have access to a charger, be it in the car for an hour or at work. I don't really know too many people who don't top up their phone batteries at least once a day, even if just to get it back up to a higher percentage.

Also my sister isn't a heavy phone user. Heavy phone users may well find the battery life on the Zenfone 5 a little poor for them. It just gets annoying when people criticize battery life on a phone that they were never going to consider buying in the first place anyway.

I agree, but the thing that annoys me is that so many handsets now (including this one) do not come with a removable battery.

I've got the S3 and it's on it's last legs (dropped and smashes screen, lagging about 60+ seconds for most apps let alone trying to type anything!) but It also has a removable battery. I've replaced the battery for something lasting much longer, the initial battery stopped seeing me through 6 hours after a year after I'd purchased it.

I'm not someone who can afford to buy a new phone every year- even when they are priced like this so I'm wary of buying anything without a removable battery. I know that it's possible to buy an add-on power/battery but it's just so much faffing around. I'd rather hold off and look for something with a removable battery even though I know they're harder to find these days.

intel atom chip can be a problem with some banking apps. i have a zenfone and a moto razr i and some apps dont work.

The phone has been down to £99 before (Deal of the Day), but still great at £115.

Most of the RedMi Note 2/3 deals from Gearbest are better value (especially for battery) for £10-£20 extra, the big issue being that it will take longer for delivery (clearly not what the OP wants) and customer service isn't great.

Huawei P8 lite is a better option overall spec wise better than this Asus.
p8 lite has a octa core processor and battery life is really good build quality is good aswell and u can pick one up from £100

There are other phones out there with a battery just the same size as this one but because of their hipster-like status this aspect is conveniently overlooked. The fact that this phone charges back up REALLY fast is more than enough to be able to look past the not-huge battery. I've had colleagues at work tell me after borrowing my Asus charger (that comes with this phone) their phones have never charged so fast - and this was from a Samsung owner. It's swings and roundabouts I think. Just plan around the fact the battery won't last 2 bloody days - Asus never claimed it will. Not hard. This phone gives you everything at this price point whereas it's peers give you most of what you get here.

Having a gig more ram isn't of any use when the phone's flat! I'd say or battery life would be worse than slightly lower specs.
The first gen moto g that I bought my mother had an awesome battery and never struggled with day to day stuff, so the new one should be just fine, and it's cheaper.
At this price point there's lots of solid options

That's not 100% true. I have one coming from a powerful LG G3, and have experienced no lag or slow down whatsoever. If you're wanting a phone for high spec games, then no, but for calls, text, internet, apps, and videos, this is perfect.

The Zen may have 2GB of Ram, but look at the processor...

That's what I was going to do until I read that 1GB RAM really ruins the multitasking experience (just going by the reviews). I know from my current phone that 1GB causes an unsatisfactory experience.

Wow a lot of phone for the money and personally and this is just my opinion I love Asus products.... they made the Nexus 7 which I had and loved and I have the Zen 305 laptop which I am very pleased with, if j didn't have the Samsung edge 6 plus I would buy this without hesitation. Heat from me
