If you want a decent scratch post I can recommend the ancol fat boy scratching post. Not cheap at just over £30 but I'm almost 2 years down the line with mine and its still doing well with my cat who is a pretty big girl giving it a good clawing several times a day.
Here is the amazon link for it but available from a few places,
I wouldn't bother I got my cat one of these and it destroyed it within a week or two not a very good product in my eyes

Bargain, my cat had the pne with the top and "enjoyed"it often. Paid £17 though. Hot!!

My two outgrew a ramp style scratching board, one of them has actually bent it flat now... So they insist on using the sofa. Thankfully it's not our brand new one, after a few noises traded between the three of us, I won the argument and they haven't touched the lovely new sofa since haha.

My cat won't sit on things like this not stable enough. Also it will be pretty hard for them to scratch the pole below. I had a similar one and it didn't get scratched once. Ended up taking it apart and using it to re-string another post.
The £4.99 one is a little better in my opinion, because it has no top. But I doubt it will be tall enough for adult cat to fully stretch out, especially a male adult cat. My smallest post is nearly 20cm taller.
Some of them are pretty cheap though! Shame the 'extra tall' one is not on offer.

Bought at the weekend for my new puss. She loves it, but I agree with cburns, it could do with being a bit taller! Cat loves sitting on top though
P.S She is not an Argos cat lol.

Ok for a kitten... but a bit too small for my princess
It's got to be 60-80cm for my full grown cat... she likes to fully stretch up and rip those claws in
