Not everyone's cup of tea I know but for a brand new SIM free iPhone 5S it's pretty decent and hopefully of help to someone. £269.99 without the upgrade.

Three are still probably your best bet for a lot of data but it really depends on how the coverage is in your area. You could try a couple of PAYG sims in another phone to see who gives you the best coverage. You can check for SIM only deals here :- https://www.mobilephonechecker.co.uk/sim-only

How are they after you do the reset but before the restore? If they are laggy then it's a hardware issue if they are ok then but show after a full restore it could be an app issue.
iPhone 4s and iPad 2 are 4 years old and time has moved on its not quite obsolete but getting there. Apps have moved on and use more features now and to some extent programmers get sloppy so assume the more processing power the phone has the less they need to optimise code. My iPad mini 2 has some lag with some apps but it's only some apps not overall. My wife's iPhone 4 lags a lot on some apps my 5 Has no lag on.

There were some issues with some hardware component parts in some of the revisions of the preview. Sorry that's a bit vague but I don't remember exactly what they were, and the root cause. One of the things to do was disable the Siri Suggestions, and the motion movement and dynamic wallpapers. However you may be able to downgrade to IOS 88 http://osxdaily.com/2015/09/16/downgrade-ios-9-back-to-ios-8-4-1/
You could also take it to an apple store and get them to check it over, they can plug cables in and do diagnostics.
The site requests a SIM serial number but I'm not with Vodaphone (it's almost like they want to limit it to Vodaphone customers...), so is that the end of my dated Apple tech owning dream?

are you aware that an ad hominem attack says far more about you than your target ?
the facts may not be palatable for either of you but they are far easier to understand.
apple release small computers that are also called iphones. as is normal in the development cycle of technology the hardware becomes more powerful and the software on it utilises that power. therefore over time things become redundant or software developed for a different platform no longer works properly. this software sometimes misbehaves and locks up or really really slows down the new software as they clash.
an example of this is the pc which once upon a time ran a system called windows xp. however that is no longer available as the great god called development cycle announced that it was too old and the old steam driven pc that ran it were to old to support any longer.
so some people called users resent this and make rash claims about the manufacturer being out to get them. they want everything to stay the same and for what was, is and shall be to continue.
the truth in this instance is that IOS 9 works and works well on iphone 5S. it doesn't make the phone grind to a halt. however, maybe some very very naughty old applications do.

I think if you upgrade your phone software and it becomes unusable the companies should take responsibility. My missus had two new hand sets in a week. First for dropping calls, 2nd wouldn't turn on after an update and the 3rd one is still dropping calls. Perhaps our house is a black spot I don't know. (iPhone 6)
I just complained to garmin after an update failed and the device would no longer turn on. I was out of warranty but they agreed to send me a refurb out if I returned the device. Do Apple do such things?
I have updated the iOS on my iPhone 4s and iPad 2 and they both have a lag now.
I know they are old but they're not obsolete.

My iPhone is a 5S running 9.2 and there is no noticeable slow down at all, absolutely none and all I've done is upgrade, no factory resets required.
And my iPad2 is very old, it has slowed down a bit, but I am using it with 9.2 to make this comment with no problem at all.
I'd suggest that you have some other problem other than just the iOS version.
gavin1
28 Dec 151#39
Not quite. Most of CPW's stock will be unlocked but the nature of how they buy is if they can source stock cheaper from the network locked they may do that. Remember anything that's network exclusive eg a particular colour or finish will almost always be sourced from a network and locked. There is no way to tell if a phone from CPW is locked or unlocked before you get to see the box.
Chances are it will be unlocked but it's not a guarantee. I've had locked and unlocked phones from CPW in the past.
You need to do as others have advised. Back them up reset and factory resort them. My iPad 2 16gb and iPhone 5 16gb both are fine no noticeable slow down on either due to the OS. Sure they are not the fastest thing ever and yes some apps are slow to open but I can't say that the OS upgrade alone made any noticeable difference the apps were slow before and after the upgrade.
And yes some apps need the latest software. What new in that. No different to a PC where a game requires say win 10 and won't run in win 7. At least Apple give you the option to upgrade like many Android makers who seem to practically stop OS upgrades the moment the phone stops being made (Sony certainly seem to in my experience)

I know it's really disconcerting as certainly the iPhone 5s has enough power to be a perfectly usable phone. The worst thing about Apple is not their practices to force updates on you, it's their fan base. I truly believe Apple apologists are the lowest form of life on Earth utterly devoid of sympathy and camaraderie for their fellow users. Look at the guy below your comment. Utterly blind to the fact our claims could not be unsubstantiated as we own these devices and speak from experience. So eager yet to call us liars. It's fascinating and sad but I truly think Apple fans at no better than nazis and terrorists. Just look upappleforums where anyone who dares to post an issue with the hardware or software and legions upon legions of people literally run the person out telling them they're using the product wro or simply lying. Worse so they get personal about it. Anyhow just having my penny's worth sitting on the loo at 4am but I empathise with you. There's forums of people saying the same thing as Us.

Much truth. The new iOS has crippled the older handsets and no amount of factory reset is going to fix it. I've lost my ipad 2 and iphone 5s 64gb this way. The way I see it, theres no point spending any money on this as the apps will eventually want you to be using a newer version of iOS and you cant get out of upgrading the software. Apple = thieves in this respect.

I am a great Apple fan and still think it worthwhile paying for Macs. However, their phone prices are crazy and they lost me now. I have an LG G4 and it's great. My daughter insists on having an iPhone simply because of Face time. Wife is going to give her my wife's old 5s-amazed at how much is still being charged for these. Wife has just upgraded to an Honor 7 at £175 on that deal yeterday and it blows the 5s out of the water, it is substantially better.

Really can't call any iPhone from companies on eBay refurbished not in the sense of what people consider refurbished bought one the other week, good seller or so it seemed turned out it was made out of parts bin pieces and had a iPad mini serial number! All I can say is mine is a 64GB model with music, thousands of pictures, thousandsand thousands of textx and emails. Now I know people will say well purge some emails, however that is a stupid suggestion as if I need my content on there I need it on there. Also it was working 90% better under ios 8.1.2. Now? it has not only slowed down to a scratch, I need to tap things twice to get them to launch, I have to type slower than before as the screen just doesn't recognise whatever I type, and whatsapp, outlook, the browser and texts are a pain to use. The camera is crippled also. Sorry but I think you're very lucky but mine is a snail now.
